Savannah

I met Noah later that evening, at a quiet café near the edge of campus. It was the kind of place that smelled faintly like burnt espresso and rain, and it was one of those nights where everything felt too still, even the sound of footsteps outside seemed to echo too loudly.

He was already there by the time I got there, sitting by the window with his hood up, his phone in his hand, his eyes flicking between the screen and the street. When he finally looked up and saw me, he gave that same half-smirk he always did, like nothing ever really surprised him.

“You look exhausted,” he said as I slid into the seat across from him.

“I could say the same for you,” I muttered, setting my bag down. “You texted me like it was life or death.”

He didn’t say anything; he just leaned forward and rested his elbows on the table. “It might be.”

That caught my attention. “Alright, what did you find?”

“You remember that guy you mentioned, the one they call The Crow?”

My chest tightened a little whe

  • Hired My Ex's Sister as Wife   The Invite

SavannahI was halfway across the quad when I saw Julian by the fountain, hanging out with some of his boys. Seeing him there with a group, I felt slightly reluctant to approach him. I’d had enough of high school boys and dealt with them rather too often to know how they were. Still, I needed to talk to him about Uriel, about what Noah told me, about how everything suddenly felt like it was closing in around me. But just as I picked up my pace and started toward him, someone stepped right into my path. Harper. She looked annoyingly perfect, as usual, with her hair bouncing all over the place, her smile just sharp enough to make you wonder if it was real. I tried to avoid her, but it was too late, so I composed myself and braced for impact. “What do you want, Harper?” I asked, crossing my arms before she even opened her mouth. She blinked innocently, like I’d just accused her of stealing my lunch. “Relax, Savannah. I’m not here to start anything.”“Right,” I said flatly. “Because that’

  • Hired My Ex's Sister as Wife   New Competition

SavannahI’d been trying to keep my head down ever since that call with Noah, but my brain was already a storm, and I couldn’t even sleep easily anymore. Every time I shut my eyes, I kept hearing that man’s voice again.I tried to shake it off, focus on school, and act normal. You know, try to pretend I could handle all of this. But even normalcy felt like a foreign language at that point. The board had been on my neck, hinting around that they were “monitoring progress.” Which loosely translates to, “they didn’t trust me anymore.” So, I went to class, tried to fit in, and kept my mouth shut about everything else. But that afternoon, classes ran later than usual, and by the time I stepped out of the building, the sky was already beginning to fade into grey. The campus was quieter than usual. Some students were heading back to the dorms, laughing, walking in groups, and just doing normal activities.I adjusted the strap of my bag and started walking down the usual path toward the dorms

  • Hired My Ex's Sister as Wife   The Crow

SavannahThe one-week timeframe the underground king had given wouldn’t stop looping in my head. Even after I got home later that night from the board meeting, showered, changed into something comfortable, and tried to distract myself with emails and random spreadsheets, nothing helped. It was like his warning had been branded somewhere inside me. One week before everything came crashing down. That was barely enough time for me to figure out how to handle this, but I had to try.I sat on the edge of my bed for a long while, my phone lying face-up beside me on the sheets. The dorm was quiet, it was a Friday night after all. Everyone was out partying or doing one reckless thing or the other, and here I was trying to figure out something that seemed impossible. My thoughts were loud, too loud, you would say. I tried to think, to plan, to figure out some kind of leverage I could use against the underground king. Something that could buy me time or give me an advantage. But I kept hitting

  • Hired My Ex's Sister as Wife   What They Don’t Know

SavannahBy the time I got back to my dorm, I didn’t want to think about what had happened that evening, and so I just got in my bed and went straight to sleep. By the time I woke up the next morning, my head felt like it had been smashed into a wall metaphorically, though honestly, it might as well have been literal. I barely slept the whole night. Every time I closed my eyes, that man’s face flashed behind my eyelids. His voice and his warning. “One week.”I sat on the edge of my bed, staring at my phone like it held all the answers. But it didn’t. All there was were just a bunch of unanswered texts, reminders about deadlines, and a message from my dad that reminded me of today’s meeting with the board. It was scheduled for ten o'clock, and so I quickly got into the shower, dressed up, and once I was done, I stared at myself in the mirror, trying to keep myself composed. I looked put together on the outside, but inside, I was a mess. Every thought was tangled, every breath felt lik

  • Hired My Ex's Sister as Wife   One Week

SavannahFor a second, I honestly thought I’d misheard him. The way he said it, like he’d been expecting me all along, made my skin prickle. I glanced between him and the guy who’d texted me, the so-called “informant.” The poor guy looked like he was seconds away from bolting. His eyes darted between us nervously, like he knew something I didn’t. That was when I realized it. Whoever this man standing in front of me now was, he wasn’t just another muscle for the underground king. “Who are you?” I asked finally. He didn’t answer right away; he just stepped forward, and the light hit his face. He was maybe in his late thirties, had a dark jacket, and a thick chain around his neck, the kind of smug calm you only see in people who think they’re untouchable. He smiled faintly, like he’d been waiting for that question. “Who am I?” he repeated, dragging out the words. “Guess you could say I’m the man who runs the streets now.”My brows knit together when I heard that. “The head of the underg
