Chapter 2

Author: Crimson Mountain
"No wonder Ms. Sterling chose to sponsor him. What an outstanding young man!"

Lara and Kyson stood in the center of the crowd, surrounded by employees showering them with compliments. Both wore smug smiles.

The office was in complete chaos, and our most important client of the day would be arriving any minute.

Suppressing my frustration, I lowered my voice. "This is a company, not a playground. The client will be here any moment."

Lara had spent the entire night unable to find me, and she hadn't yet had the chance to vent her anger. The moment she heard me speak, she instinctively wrapped an arm around Kyson's waist, making her support for him unmistakable.

"Nolan, how many times do I have to tell you? Kyson is an adult now. He has 'Adult Privilege.' I allowed him to stand here. That's a privilege I granted him. Do you have a problem with that?"

Her expression turned icy.

Immediately, people around us began siding with her.

"Nolan, look up. The sign on the wall says Sterling Group."

"I honestly don't know where a live-in son-in-law gets the nerve to lecture people around here."

Not a single person stood on my side.

And yet, without me, Sterling Group would have gone bankrupt the very year Lara and I got married. The only reason it was still standing today was because of my connections and my ability.

But Lara had become far too full of herself. She believed my love would never run out. To her, all that mattered was that I'd embarrassed her in front of the young man who had just come of age.

Lara's face darkened. She grabbed my wrist and dragged me into the executive lounge in full view of everyone.

I'd been intoxicated by her fake tenderness for so many years that I actually believed she wanted to explain herself.

Instead, the moment she lured me inside, she locked the door from the outside.

Shock quickly gave way to heartbreak.

But I didn't even have time to dwell on it. I'd fought tooth and nail to secure today's deal. I had to get out.

"Lara! Open the door!" I pounded on it with all my strength. "Open the door! I have an important client today!"

The office doors were built thick and heavy for soundproofing.

I pounded until my hands swelled, yet I never heard Lara's voice.

Instead, I heard Kyson speaking through the door in a deliberately considerate tone, "Mr. Taylor, Lara already went downstairs to meet the client. You can yell all you want. It won't do any good.

"She also said today's the day she's going to teach me how to conduct a business negotiation."

The moment I heard that, I froze.

The client had flown in from abroad and would only work with me. Anyone else was useless.

I forced myself to soften my tone. "Kyson, please open the door. Today's negotiation isn't something anyone can fool around with."

Kyson let out a giggle, his thin voice slipping through the crack beneath the door. "Mr. Taylor, what do you think? If I tell Lara you said her business negotiations are just fooling around, do you think she'll get mad?"

With that, the sound of handcrafted leather dress shoes clicked farther and farther away.

Only then did I fully realize it. He always called me "Mr. Taylor," but he called my wife "Lara."

His intentions had been obvious all along. I was just too blind to see them until today.

The executive lounge door never opened again until nightfall. No one brought me so much as a sip of water. It was as though I'd been completely forgotten in that corner.

I had no idea how much time had passed before I finally heard voices outside.

"Lara, don't be upset. Nolan must not have done the prep work properly. That's why today's negotiation fell apart."

I had personally worked on that project for six months. The deal had been on the verge of closing. Yet at the final moment, my own wife locked me away just to protect another man.

And now they were blaming me?

"Thank you, Kyson. You're so thoughtful and considerate. I raised you so well. How could I bear to see you marry another woman someday?"

My brow twitched.

A moment later, a muffled grunt came from outside the door, followed by Kyson's low chuckle. "Lara, I'm never marrying anyone else."

"Kyson, take your hand off me..."

"Lara, I'm going to exercise my 'Adult Privilege' with you now, and you're going to do as I say."

"So now you're actually blaming me for not telling you the truth, even after you were the one who knocked me unconscious and had me taken to the hospital."The medical staff could testify that Lara had been the one who knocked me out. That added another charge against her.The trial came to an end.She was sentenced to ten years in prison. The best years of her life would be spent behind bars.As for me, I gained control of the Sterling Group, along with $500 million in damages—more than enough to drain every last cent of her parents' personal assets.Naturally, they refused to pay.But my family wasn't one to be pushed around.Besides, I had Vivian on my side.As the Cross family's daughter, she had connections everywhere and handled everything for me without complaint.Once everything was finally settled, I couldn't shake the feeling that one loose end still remained.…Vivian grinned. "Don't tell me you just realized you still owe me a reward."I pushed her head away as

In their eyes, I was nothing more than a machine that made money.Fine.Originally, I'd only planned to leave Lara with nothing. Now I'd make sure her parents didn't get a dime either.Lara stopped trying to calm her parents down. Instead, she dropped to one knee before me and took out the plain wedding band she'd used to propose seven years ago."Honey, I've gotten rid of everyone who doesn't matter. Now you're the only person in my heart. Will you wear this ring again?"…Right there in front of everyone, Lara proposed to me for the second time.I reached out and gently took the ring from between her fingers. Then, with one perfect arc, I tossed it straight into the trash."Nolan…""Enough." I pressed the remote. The giant screen behind me lit up with our prenuptial agreement. The terms were displayed in plain black and white. If the wife committed adultery, she would not only leave the marriage empty-handed, but she would also return every resource and financial benefit

"Vivian," I said. "Let her up."Vivian reluctantly took her foot off Lara and returned to the couch, sitting close beside me.Lara started to climb to her feet and move toward the sofa too.One look from me froze her in place. She didn't dare take another step.I told her to stay exactly where she was. Then I walked into my study and returned with two documents. I'd already signed both of them. The moment Lara saw what they were, she tore them to pieces. The papers fluttered to the floor like confetti. Her face filled with disbelief."Honey, why do you want a divorce? Haven't we always had a good marriage? You love me so much. How could you bear to leave me?"I let out a cold laugh. Before I could say a single word, she hurriedly interrupted me, "Is this because of Kyson? I swear to you, I'll send him away immediately! It'll go back to being just the two of us for the rest of our lives, okay?"Vivian couldn't take it anymore. She let out a mocking laugh. "Lara, you really have

Rumor had it that the Sterling Group heiress was having an affair with a college-bound student she'd sponsored for years.Rumor also had it that she cheated on the very day of her wedding anniversary with her husband. There were even rumors that she'd forced her own husband to undergo sterilization surgery for the sake of that student.I had the time of my life scrolling through all the gossip.Whenever I got into it, I'd even pretend to be an insider and casually drop another "exclusive" in the comments.I posted screenshots of the gifts Kyson had proudly shown off on his social media, then I included his SAT score too. Before long, two more hashtags shot to the top of the trending list: "RichHeiressBuysStudentSexySleepwear" and "NearPerfectSATStillNeedsShortcuts"The comments were so creative they had me laughing out loud.Just then, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, I was stunned. It was my old neighbor, Vivian Cross. I hadn't seen her in seven years.I invited he

"And did you keep that promise?"Lara froze. She was speechless.A long while passed before she finally said, "Nolan, don't worry. I'm not divorcing you. You'll always be my husband in public."The words grated on my ears."Lara, you're not even pretending anymore? If I'm your husband in public, does that mean you want Kyson to be your husband in private?"Lara slowly stood up, forcing a smile onto her face. "Honey, I know you've been through a lot lately. But Kyson's only had 'Adult Privilege' for a few days. I can't take it away from him so soon. You understand, don't you?"My phone rang.Annoyed, I glanced at the screen. The moment I saw the message, the weight that had been sitting on my chest instantly lifted.I even smiled as I answered her, "Of course."I would never understand, and I was absolutely divorcing her.…The family legal team informed me that the property division had been finalized. As long as I could produce solid proof that Lara had been unfaithful, t

A dull pain exploded at the back of my head, then everything went black. When I came to, Kyson was sitting beside my hospital bed."Congratulations, Nolan." He smiled. "You'll never be able to touch another woman for the rest of your life."He leaned closer like a venomous snake. "Lara told you last night that you'd always be her husband. But with just a few words, I turned you into a cripple and planted a seed of doubt between the two of you."How much longer do you really think you'll keep your place as her husband?"Without changing my expression, I pressed the button to raise the hospital bed. Then, in one swift motion, I grabbed the steaming cup of hot water from the bedside table and threw it straight into his face.Kyson shrieked as the scalding water poured over him."Kyson! What happened?"Lara rushed through the door just then and immediately pulled him into her arms.…Kyson buried his face against her chest, tears streaming down his face. "Don't blame Mr. Taylor.
