Chapter 1

I’d spent the entire day discussing projects, and exhaustion weighed on every inch of me. With the last shred of restraint I had left, I gave Lara Sterling one final chance.

"Are you sure you want me to sleep in the guest room?"

Hearing the coldness in my voice, Lara frowned and set the fruit platter down with a hard thud.

"What is that supposed to mean, Nolan Taylor? Kyson is still a kid. We’re family. What’s wrong with us lying in the same bed?

"Don’t judge us through your own dirty-minded assumptions and make everything sound inappropriate. Kyson’s insomnia has gotten so bad. What’s wrong with me staying with him?

"If you behave and stop making a scene, we’ll celebrate our anniversary properly next week."

I watched the woman in front of me continue talking without pause. I was too exhausted to say another word, so I merely nodded, pretending to agree.

Lara seemed satisfied with my response. She picked up the fruit and turned to leave.

Forcing myself to keep moving, I went into the walk-in closet, grabbed two changes of clothes, and took a cab to a hotel.

Half an hour later, Lara apparently realized I wasn’t in the villa’s guest room and began calling me nonstop.

My phone rang until the battery finally died. Only then did it go quiet.

Kyson Ellis was a disadvantaged student Lara had begun sponsoring before we were married. When he entered his senior year of high school, Lara brought him to live with us so she could take care of him personally.

At first, I wasn’t comfortable living under the same roof with a strange teenage boy, but Lara begged me again and again until I finally gave in.

She said Kyson was pitiful. He had lost both his parents at a young age, and the SAT was one of the most important events of his life. She would only feel at ease if she could keep him close and care for him herself.

She said she respected my decision, but I couldn’t bear watching her lose sleep night after night over him.

So I softened far too easily.

Then, two days ago, Kyson’s SAT scores came out.

He rushed over to us, grinning as he showed us a screenshot of his score.

A near-perfect 1590.

I couldn’t understand it.

He had rarely broken 1100 on any of his practice tests throughout senior year. How had he suddenly scored in the top percentile nationwide?

But Lara didn’t notice anything suspicious. She was so thrilled that she announced on the spot that she was granting Kyson "Adult Privilege."

"Starting today, Nolan and I will gradually introduce you to the adult world. Whatever adults are allowed to do, we’ll support you in doing it."

Support him, indeed.

She supported him so openly that he moved straight into our master bedroom.

Seven years ago, out of all the women my family had considered suitable marriage prospects, I chose Lara because she seemed the most compassionate and attentive.

She truly was compassionate.

That compassion simply wasn’t reserved for me.

For the sake of the important meeting the next morning, I forced myself to sleep for a few hours.

When I arrived at the office, I heard excited voices outside before I had even stepped out of the elevator.

"Kyson is incredible! I've never seen an SAT score like that!"

In their eyes, I was nothing more than a machine that made money.Fine.Originally, I'd only planned to leave Lara with nothing. Now I'd make sure her parents didn't get a dime either.Lara stopped trying to calm her parents down. Instead, she dropped to one knee before me and took out the plain wedding band she'd used to propose seven years ago."Honey, I've gotten rid of everyone who doesn't matter. Now you're the only person in my heart. Will you wear this ring again?"…Right there in front of everyone, Lara proposed to me for the second time.I reached out and gently took the ring from between her fingers. Then, with one perfect arc, I tossed it straight into the trash."Nolan…""Enough." I pressed the remote. The giant screen behind me lit up with our prenuptial agreement. The terms were displayed in plain black and white. If the wife committed adultery, she would not only leave the marriage empty-handed, but she would also return every resource and financial benefit

"Vivian," I said. "Let her up."Vivian reluctantly took her foot off Lara and returned to the couch, sitting close beside me.Lara started to climb to her feet and move toward the sofa too.One look from me froze her in place. She didn't dare take another step.I told her to stay exactly where she was. Then I walked into my study and returned with two documents. I'd already signed both of them. The moment Lara saw what they were, she tore them to pieces. The papers fluttered to the floor like confetti. Her face filled with disbelief."Honey, why do you want a divorce? Haven't we always had a good marriage? You love me so much. How could you bear to leave me?"I let out a cold laugh. Before I could say a single word, she hurriedly interrupted me, "Is this because of Kyson? I swear to you, I'll send him away immediately! It'll go back to being just the two of us for the rest of our lives, okay?"Vivian couldn't take it anymore. She let out a mocking laugh. "Lara, you really have

Rumor had it that the Sterling Group heiress was having an affair with a college-bound student she'd sponsored for years.Rumor also had it that she cheated on the very day of her wedding anniversary with her husband. There were even rumors that she'd forced her own husband to undergo sterilization surgery for the sake of that student.I had the time of my life scrolling through all the gossip.Whenever I got into it, I'd even pretend to be an insider and casually drop another "exclusive" in the comments.I posted screenshots of the gifts Kyson had proudly shown off on his social media, then I included his SAT score too. Before long, two more hashtags shot to the top of the trending list: "RichHeiressBuysStudentSexySleepwear" and "NearPerfectSATStillNeedsShortcuts"The comments were so creative they had me laughing out loud.Just then, the doorbell rang. When I opened the door, I was stunned. It was my old neighbor, Vivian Cross. I hadn't seen her in seven years.I invited he

"And did you keep that promise?"Lara froze. She was speechless.A long while passed before she finally said, "Nolan, don't worry. I'm not divorcing you. You'll always be my husband in public."The words grated on my ears."Lara, you're not even pretending anymore? If I'm your husband in public, does that mean you want Kyson to be your husband in private?"Lara slowly stood up, forcing a smile onto her face. "Honey, I know you've been through a lot lately. But Kyson's only had 'Adult Privilege' for a few days. I can't take it away from him so soon. You understand, don't you?"My phone rang.Annoyed, I glanced at the screen. The moment I saw the message, the weight that had been sitting on my chest instantly lifted.I even smiled as I answered her, "Of course."I would never understand, and I was absolutely divorcing her.…The family legal team informed me that the property division had been finalized. As long as I could produce solid proof that Lara had been unfaithful, t

A dull pain exploded at the back of my head, then everything went black. When I came to, Kyson was sitting beside my hospital bed."Congratulations, Nolan." He smiled. "You'll never be able to touch another woman for the rest of your life."He leaned closer like a venomous snake. "Lara told you last night that you'd always be her husband. But with just a few words, I turned you into a cripple and planted a seed of doubt between the two of you."How much longer do you really think you'll keep your place as her husband?"Without changing my expression, I pressed the button to raise the hospital bed. Then, in one swift motion, I grabbed the steaming cup of hot water from the bedside table and threw it straight into his face.Kyson shrieked as the scalding water poured over him."Kyson! What happened?"Lara rushed through the door just then and immediately pulled him into her arms.…Kyson buried his face against her chest, tears streaming down his face. "Don't blame Mr. Taylor.
