The kitchen felt too quiet after he left. His smoke still lingered faintly in the air, mixed with the leftover scent of my shampoo. I yanked open a cabinet, pulling down a pan just to hear the clatter against the counter. Anything to drown out the silence.

I’d barely set it down when my phone rang from the bedroom. The sound startled me, sharp in the stillness. With a groan, I left the pan where it was and headed down the hall.

The screen lit up as I grabbed it off the nightstand. Nova.

I swiped to answer. “Hey.”

“Tessa,” her voice was quick, worried. “How are you? I’m so sorry I couldn’t stay at the hospital with you yesterday. I had to take that test I missed this morning. It was a nightmare. I wanted to be there—”

I cut her off softly. “It’s fine. I’m okay.” The lie came out flat.

“You don’t sound okay,” she said, catching it instantly. “Are you in pain?”

I hesitated. Pain wasn’t even the word. “I just… I need to clear my head.”

“Then I’m coming over. I’ll be there in twenty.”

“No.

  • His Biker Girl, Her Biker Prince.   Chapter 34

JAXSON.I was still sitting at the table, staring at the empty seat Tessa had just left, when Cole walked in from the hallway. His face looked serious, different from his usual lazy grin.“Dad wants to see you,” he said.I looked up. “Now?”He nodded once. “Yeah. Study.”I sighed and pushed my chair back. Ryder was already gone, so that meant he was probably there too. The way everyone had acted when Tessa mentioned her father’s name hadn’t left my mind. There was something there, something they all knew and weren’t saying.I followed Cole through the hall, past the living room. When we reached the study, the door was already half-open. Ryder stood by the window with his arms crossed, and my father was seated behind his desk, a cigarette burning slowly between his fingers. The air in the room felt heavy, like there was something I was walking into that I wasn’t ready for.Cole closed the door behind us. Nobody spoke for a few seconds. My father didn’t look at me right away, he was sta

TESSA.My head was pounding. The kind of pounding that made my skull feel too tight for my brain. I groaned and pressed my hand against my forehead, trying to open my eyes. The light was too bright. The room was unfamiliar. It wasn’t my room. The ceiling was higher, the bed was bigger, and the air smelled faintly of cologne and soap. My stomach twisted as last night’s memories started piecing themselves together, the club, the music, the drinks, the laughter. And then nothing.I sat up quickly, panic shooting through me.“What the hell—” I muttered, then froze when I looked down.I was wearing a shirt. Not mine. A large, white one that hung loosely over my thighs. It was clearly Jaxson’s. My heart skipped. My face burned. He didn’t.He wouldn’t—“Are you kidding me?” I whispered under my breath.Images of him carrying me, his stupid smug grin, his teasing voice, everything about him flashed through my mind. The thought that he might have changed my clothes while I was passed out made

JAXSON.When we walked back into the VIP lounge, the music was still loud. Tessa walked ahead of me, her steps a little uneven, her cheeks flushed from the alcohol. The others were already drunk and laughing over something that probably wasn’t funny. As soon as they saw us, Nova pointed at us with a grin. “Where did you two disappear to?”Cole leaned forward, smirking. “Don’t ask stupid questions. They probably went to make out.”The whole group burst out laughing. I just shook my head and dropped into the seat beside Tessa.“Real mature,” I muttered.Ryder lifted a brow, holding a glass in his hand. “You two missed the last round of shots.”“Good,” I said, but Nova was already waving the bartender over.“Come on, Jaxson,” she said, slurring slightly. “It’s a celebration. Don’t be boring.”I looked at Tessa. She was smiling at me like she was challenging me. I sighed. “Fine. One shot.”The glasses were lined up in seconds, the table filled with bottles and empty cups. Cole counted dow

TESSA.I tried to calm myself down, but it was hard. I don’t show my emotions, but coming here and seeing this surprise really made me feel happy. As much as I don’t want my birthday to be celebrated anymore since I lost my father, seeing this today made me realize that I really needed it more than I wanted to admit.I wiped my tears softly so as not to ruin my makeup, and I finally turned to look at them. They were smiling, and they chorused one more time, “Happy Birthday, Tessa!”I smiled and whispered, “Thank you, guys.”Nova grinned. “It’s time to cut the cake, birthday girl.”I smiled and walked to the table. I stood in the middle and held the knife, and Cole said, “You’ll cut the cake on the count of three. Now let’s go, everyone!”They all chorused, “Three, two, one—happy birthday!”I cut the cake, and they all clapped. Cole said, “Now let’s party! The drinks should go around!”Soon everyone started drinking, and the whole place became lively.I could see Jaxson stealing glance

TESSA.I was curled up on my couch, the half-empty bottle of tequila sweating on the table, my bare feet tucked under me. My throat was raw from the burn, but I poured another shot anyway. I didn’t care. If I drank enough, maybe this birthday would blur into nothing. The knock on my door didn’t stop, even when I ignored it. Then it opened without warning.“Tessa?” Nova’s voice cut through, sharp and disapproving.I groaned, pressing the rim of the glass to my lips. “Go away, Nova.”She didn’t. Of course, she didn’t. She walked in like she owned the place, plucked the glass from my hand, and set it down with a sharp clink.“You’re pathetic,” she said.“Thanks,” I muttered, reaching for the bottle. She snatched that too, lifting it above her head. “You really think I’m letting you sit here, drinking yourself stupid on your birthday? Alone?”I leaned back into the couch, glaring at her. “It’s my birthday. I get to choose how miserable I want to be.”Nova rolled her eyes, tossing the bott

TESSA.I walked into the lecture hall already late. The professor was already writing across the board, his voice rolling steady over the room. A few students glanced up, then back down at their notes.Nova caught my eye the second I walked in. Her eyebrows lifted. I must have looked worse than I thought. I kept my head down, moving toward her. The only empty seat was next to her, halfway up the row.She leaned closer as I sat. “What happened?” Her voice was low but sharp with concern.“Nothing,” I whispered, staring at my notebook even though I wasn’t writing anything. My throat burned.“Don’t give me that,” she murmured.I lifted my chin slightly, tilting my face up, blinking hard. If I looked up, maybe the tears would roll back instead of down. My chest ached from holding it in.Nova didn’t wait. She reached over, squeezed my wrist, then tugged at my bag. “Come on.”I shook my head. “Class—”“I don’t care,” she said quietly but firmly. “Let’s go.”She stood, slinging both our bags
