CHAPTER 47

The office was quieter than usual, but the silence wasn’t comforting. It was loaded, heavy, like every corner was holding its breath. I could feel Reign behind me, close, his presence a constant weight that was both protective and suffocating.

I leaned against the window, watching the city pulse below, and tried to calm my racing thoughts. Ivy had pushed the board hard, and the morning’s fallout had left tension dangling between us, sharp and unresolved.

“You’re thinking too much,” Reign said quietly behind me. His voice, low and intimate, made my pulse stutter.

I glanced at him, trying to hide the effect he had on me. “Maybe. But it’s not paranoia if they really are trying to manipulate us.”

He stepped closer, hand brushing against my arm—not quite touching. “It’s more than that. It’s a test. Of trust. Of loyalty. Of patience.”

I swallowed. “Then maybe I fail. I’m not perfect.”

His gaze darkened. “You’re not allowed to fail. Not here. Not with me.”

The words hit harder th

  • His Billion-Dollar Mistake    Confident Steps

CHAPTER 67 Confidence didn’t arrive like a switch flipping. It came in fragments. In the way I walked into the building that morning without rehearsing my smile. In the way my shoulders stayed relaxed even when conversations shifted toward decisions with weight. In the way my voice didn’t soften when I spoke.I noticed it when the elevator doors opened and I stepped out first instead of waiting for permission.Small things. But they added up.The new division was officially announced that morning. Not with fanfare. No dramatic unveiling. Just a clean, deliberate internal memo outlining purpose, leadership, and direction. My name sat there in black and white.Director — Strategic Development & CultureI stared at the screen longer than necessary.Director.A few months ago, the word would’ve made my stomach flip with fear. Now it made my chest expand.Reign appeared at my side, coffee in hand. “You look like you’re arguing with the screen.”“I’m negotiating with it,” I replied. “Tryin

  • His Billion-Dollar Mistake    Full Circle

CHAPTER 66 The key felt heavier the next morning. Not physically.Symbolically.I stood in my apartment, staring at it resting on the kitchen counter like it might disappear if I blinked too long. A simple piece of metal. Cool. Unassuming. And yet it represented everything that had changed.Everything I had survived.I picked it up, turning it between my fingers, memories flooding in whether I invited them or not.The first day I’d walked into Reign’s office by accident. The way my hands had shaken as I’d held my resume. The look in his eyes—sharp, assessing, distant.Back then, I hadn’t imagined keys. Or trust. Or standing on equal ground.Back then, I’d just wanted not to fail. Now failure didn’t haunt me the same way. It didn’t own me.I slipped the key into my bag and headed out.The office greeted me with its new rhythm. Lighter. Open. Alive. Conversations flowed without fear. People debated instead of whispering. Laughter wasn’t hushed.I paused just inside the lobby, letting i

  • His Billion-Dollar Mistake    The Grand Gesture

CHAPTER 65 I didn’t expect the surprise to come quietly. If I’d learnt anything about Reign, it was that when he planned something, it usually arrived wrapped in control, precision, and timing sharp enough to cut. So when the morning started like any other—coffee lukewarm, inbox manageable, sunlight pouring through the windows without drama—I let my guard down. That was my first mistake.“Clear your afternoon,” he said casually, passing my desk without stopping.I blinked. “I have three meetings.”“You had three meetings,” he corrected, already walking away. “They’ve been rescheduled.”I pushed back from my chair. “You can’t just—”He glanced over his shoulder, one brow lifting. “I can. And I did.”I stared after him, heart thudding.“Reign,” I called. “What’s going on?”He paused in the doorway to his office, eyes dark with something unreadable. “Trust me.”The words landed heavier than they should have.Trust me.I sat back down slowly, trying to focus on work, but my thoughts kept

  • His Billion-Dollar Mistake    A new Beginning

CHAPTER 64 The shift was subtle at first. Not a headline. Not an announcement.Just… air.Lighter.I noticed it the moment I stepped out of the elevator the next morning. The usual tightness in my chest wasn’t there. No instinctive scan of faces. No bracing for whispers.People were laughing.Actually laughing.Someone had brought pastries. Someone else complained about being late without fear of being judged for it. The office felt human again.Alive.I set my bag down and paused, taking it in. For months, this place had felt like a battlefield dressed up in glass and steel. Now it felt like a workplace.A beginning.“Careful,” a familiar voice said behind me. “If you keep smiling like that, people will think you’re plotting something.”I turned to see Reign, coat draped over his arm, expression relaxed in a way that still surprised me.“Maybe I am,” I said. “Plotting peace.”He raised an eyebrow. “Dangerous ambition.”I followed him toward his office, noticing how people greeted hi

  • His Billion-Dollar Mistake    Private Moments

CHAPTER 63 The building emptied slowly that night. Not in a rush, not with the frantic energy of deadlines looming. Just a quiet exhale, floor by floor, lights dimming as people logged out and went home to lives that didn’t revolve around board politics and corporate warfare.I stayed. Not because I had to.Because I wanted to.Reign noticed, of course. He always did.“You don’t usually linger this long,” he said, glancing at his watch as he shut down his laptop.I shrugged, gathering a few papers that didn’t really need organising. “Guess I’m enjoying the silence.”He studied me for a moment, then nodded. “It suits you.”That word again.Suits you.It used to feel like borrowed clothing. Something I wore carefully, afraid it would slip and expose how unsure I really was. Now… it felt like mine. The office lights dimmed automatically at eight, leaving only the soft glow from the city outside and the lamps near his desk. The windows reflected us faintly. Two figures standing closer th

  • His Billion-Dollar Mistake    Shared Dreams

CHAPTER 62 The quiet didn’t scare me anymore. That was new.I stood by the window early that morning, coffee cooling in my hands, watching the city wake up. Cars streamed below like veins carrying life. For once, I wasn’t calculating what could go wrong.I was thinking about what could go right.Behind me, Reign moved around the office with unhurried ease. No calls barked into the phone. No sharp turns of tension. Just the soft rustle of papers, the muted click of his laptop opening.Peace looked… strange on him.“You’re staring,” he said, not looking up.I smiled faintly. “I’m allowed to think now. No emergencies.”“Careful,” he replied. “You might get used to it.”I turned. “Is that a threat?”His lips curved. “A warning.”I walked back to my desk, settling in. My inbox was lighter than usual. No frantic messages. No damage control. Just routine updates and… invitations. One subject line caught my eye.Strategic Expansion Proposal — Input RequestedI hesitated, then opened it.They
