Chapter 39 — Twelve Years

ผู้เขียน: Evve
last update วันที่เผยแพร่: 2026-04-08 21:14:31

POV: Yessica | Location: Edinburgh

She called Pippa at noon.

Not because she was ready. Because waiting longer wouldn't make her more ready, and the thing about grief was that it didn't actually get smaller if you fed it time. It just got heavier.

Pippa answered on the second ring.

"Yess! How are you feeling? I've been thinking about you all morning."

The warmth of it. Perfect, practiced, the exact frequency of a woman who had known Yessica long enough to know exactly what she needed to hear.

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 153: Friday Evening

POV: Yessica | EdinburghEleanor was on a call within ten minutes. All three of them — Eleanor, Yessica, and Lewis — plus David Ng from Bellamy's board. Eleanor's corporate contact joined four minutes later."Walk me through the authorization code," Eleanor said.Yessica pulled up the FCA notification on her screen. "My executive credentials. The code is unique to me. It requires two-factor authentication through my registered device and a password that changes every ninety days.""When did you last update the password?""Six weeks ago.""Did you use a shared network at any point after updating it? Hotel, airport, an office outside Bellamy headquarters?"Yessica went through it in her head. Board offsite four weeks ago. Edinburgh Conference Centre. She had logged in on the building's WiFi to check the filing dashboard."Conference centre network," she said. "Four weeks ago."Eleanor was already typing. "Same window as the Aldermoor VPN activity. They were not just breaching Lewis's le

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 152: Friday

POV: Yessica | EdinburghLewis got home at ten-forty.She was in the kitchen with a glass of water and her laptop open, not working, just having something to look at that was not the ceiling. He read the kitchen the way he always read rooms when he came in late — checking what had moved, what the lighting said, where she was."Ethan had a nightmare," she said. "You were not here. I went to him."He sat down. She told him the facts. The sound, the room, Button on the floor, his breathing coming down, what he had said. She did not tell him how it had felt to sit on the edge of that bed holding a stuffed rabbit while a three-year-old watched her with the specific gravity of a child deciding whether to trust something. She would keep that part for Dr. Sarah Chen."He offered you Button," Lewis said."Yes."A silence."He has never offered Button to anyone," Lewis said. "Not me. Not Claire. Regina told me he won't even let the childminder touch it.""I know. You told me."He looked at her

  • His Billion-Dollar Regret: The Forgotten Wife Returns   Chapter 151: The Week After

POV: Yessica | EdinburghThe morning after Ethan's first nightmare, no one said much.Ethan ate his cereal with Button propped against his glass, the way he always did, but he was quieter than usual. He answered questions when Claire asked them and did not start any conversations of his own.Lewis got him dressed and took him to the park after breakfast. Just the two of them.Yessica put Rose down for a nap and stood in the kitchen and thought about the way Ethan had looked in that bed at eleven o'clock, sitting upright with his lips moving and no sound coming out.She thought about standing in the doorway and watching Lewis handle it.She thought about the fact that it had not occurred to her to go in.***The second nightmare came two nights later.Same pattern. No warning sound before it. She woke because Lewis woke, and she lay still with her eyes open and listened to him cross the hall and say Ethan's name quietly and then say it again. It took twelve minutes. She knew because sh

POV: Lewis | EdinburghEleanor called back at twelve-forty."He has been in the system," she said. "Not through our main portal. A secondary access point — a read-only account created eight months ago under a paralegal login that no longer works here. Someone used that credential four times in the last six weeks. The last access was forty-seven hours ago.""What did they pull?" Lewis asked."Our full filing strategy for the custody case. The Walsh recusal motion draft — before I filed it." A pause. "The motion was drafted three days ago. I filed it this morning. He referenced it tonight on the phone to Yessica. That is not coincidence.""Can you trace it back to Marcus directly?""I have an IP address. My IT contact says it routes through a VPN registered to a company called Aldermoor Consulting."Yessica was already typing."Aldermoor Consulting," she said. "Registered six months ago. Single director." She turned the screen. "Marcus Chen."Lewis looked at the screen for two seconds.

POV: Lewis | EdinburghHe called Yessica from the hospital car park. She answered on the first ring. He could hear that she had not slept."Marcus," he said.A silence."Tell me," she said.He told her everything. Catherine's account. The fourteen months. The Tokyo morning. Marsden and Cole. The board. She was quiet through all of it. He had learned to read her silences — this one was not shock. It was processing."Nine days," she said, when he finished."Until the quarterly review.""He does not need a majority to do damage at a quarterly review. He needs three things. A resolution on the table, enough proxy votes to pass it, and you distracted enough that you cannot mount a counter-response in time." She paused. "What is the composition of your board?""Nine members. Three independent directors, two institutional investor representatives, Harrison, Marcus, me, and one outside appointment Catherine held.""Catherine's seat.""She has not been active since the Rose petition. The seat

POV: Lewis | EdinburghHarrison was waiting in the corridor outside Catherine's room.He looked tired. Not the careful tiredness of someone managing how they appear, just genuinely worn out, the kind that came from a day that had asked too much."She has been waiting since seven," Harrison said. "She would not let me call you until she was ready.""Ready for what?""To say it without taking it back." He looked at Lewis steadily. "She has been rehearsing."Lewis pushed the door open.***Catherine was sitting up. No monitors, no IV — she had come in for chest pain, been checked, been kept overnight for observation. The room was private and quiet. She looked smaller than she did anywhere else. She looked at Lewis when he entered and did not look away."Sit down," she said.He sat."I am not going to ask you to forgive me tonight," she said. "That is not why I called you here. I am calling you here because I know something you need to know before that hearing, and I have spent three week
