~Ioana~
My eyelashes fluttered open, squinting at the light. My eyes stung a little bit. I blinked twice, the world urged into focus, my mind calm—a serenity unique to only the morning hours before.
Knock knock.
"Come in," I groaned, turning over to my side.
"Oh my, Madame!" Vivian exclaimed. "The elders have requested your audience at noon."
'The elders?' Repeating the name that seemed to hover over the surface of my mind, never sinking.
"What elders?"
"The elders of our kingdom, Madame," Vivian replied, dragging her words, sounding puzzled.
Still staring at the ceiling, I said, "What did you say they requested again?" my tone flat.
"They request your audience at noon, Madame."
"Oh, it's noon," I replied with a drowsy mind. "Wake me up later. I'll just catch some sleep for a while."
"Madame, it's almost noon!" Vivian cried out, her voice sharp, piercing through the fog brought by sleep.
"Almost what? Noon?" I shot up from the bed, staring at her with wide, incredulous eyes.
"You're kidding me, right?" My head snapped to the window, alarmed, scrambling down from the bed in nothing but my nighties, barefooted, ignoring the panicked shout, "Madame!" from Vivian behind me.
I shoved the weighty drape to the side. Light flooded into the room, the sun already halfway across its path greeted me with a smile.
And I greeted it with a cry of my own.
"Why didn't you wake me up sooner, Vivian!" I moaned in distress.
"Your Majesty didn’t wake up!" Biting her lips, tears brimming up in her eyes, Vivian complained.
That's when I remembered, the birds are chirping beautifully.
'Let me sleep!'
"Your Majesty, it's already daybreak. You can't sleep for much longer…"
'Just give me some more time. I’ll definitely get up.'
"Your Majesty, please wake up."
'Don't disturb me!'
"Your Majesty, you have a meet—"
Memories popped up like clowns mocking me. Placing my hand over my forehead—had the night before been too exhausting—mentally—that I slept till it was almost noon?
I could almost see the sneer at the side of Elder Caldren's lips in mockery, his words lashing down at my skin, calling me every word synonymous to 'uncouth!'
I winced.
Like a whirlwind, I rushed into the bathroom, leaving the bewildered Vivian scrambling after me. Coming out a while later after donning the cumbersome wear, with thousands of layers underneath the dress, it literally pressed against my lungs.
"Vivian, can you loosen this?" I asked Vivian for the nth time.
"Madame, I really can't. You're heading to meet the elders."
I couldn't help but murmur, "It's just the elders, not the goddess."
"Your Majesty!" I heard Vivian's horrified gasp behind me. "Don't say that, Madame." She took a step forward.
"But isn't that true?" I huffed, taking in more air, the weight of the dress soiling my mood.
From my side view, she nervously glanced around. "There are fervent followers of..." she lowered her voice, "the elders who almost take them as—deities," her voice dropped barely above a whisper, her eyes darting from left to right, her movements spelling caution.
My eyes narrowed. "Is that so?" I quirked an eyebrow at how strange it was.
She bobbed her head up and down, her baby hair flyaways following her movements as I resisted the urge to smoothen them.
"It's said that once, when someone called out—" she paused, hesitating, then changed her words. "—accused the elders of something, the accuser's body was found in an alleyway the next day, beaten up so badly that his ribs and hands were broken. It's said he was bloodied with scary purple bruises all over his body. His accusation couldn't be proven as he slipped into a coma that same day. The case was closed just like that."
"Maybe it could be a terrible coincidence, right…" I reasoned, giving them the benefit of the doubt.
"We wished it was, Your Majesty, but soon we found out it wasn't. They grew bolder by the day, sometimes aggressively confronting anyone who doesn't agree with their words."
"One time it almost got into a brutal brawl."
"Wait! It happened in the palace? Right here?" My brows furrowed deeply.
"N-No, Your Majesty. Not in here. They don't dare to, even if they were given ten thousand courage." She scoffed, jutting her chin out.
"So? How did you see it?"
"Well… when I was still serving as a common maid, washing dishes and doing laundry before I had the privilege of being with you, I used to have an off day where I could do anything for that day. I would go out into the city, and that's where I witnessed it." She shuddered slightly, as if remembering something horrible.
It was after she mentioned it that it came to my mind.
"That's true, Vivian. Ever since you've worked with me, you haven't had an off, have you? When was your off day?" I asked, guilt gnawing at my heart.
I had gotten so used to her being around that I forgot it was a job for her. She must be exhausted, wasn't she?
But to my surprise, Vivian's hand grabbed my sleeve. "Your Majesty, do you not want me anymore?" Her brown eyes glistened with unshed tears.
I halted, waving away another group of servants who were about to kneel. I stared directly at her. "Why would you think that?"
"Because…" The tip of her nose reddened. "You asked me for my previous off days, and…" she sniffed, "if I leave, who's going to take care of you? Would… would you have to bring in someone to take care of you if you give me offs?"
"Maybe one day, Her Majesty might no longer need me around anymore…" she wiped away the tear that rolled down her eyes furiously, the corners of her eyes turning red like her nose.
I continued walking forward, giving her slight comfort. "No, I'm just worried that you'll be exhausted from the labour. It's for your own good. I'm not thinking about replacing you—never!"
I bent the corner when Vivian said timidly, "Actually, Your Majesty, it's this way." I froze, remembering I didn't know the way.
"Lead the way, Vivian," I ordered as she took lead with a curt nod.
"I think it's pretty good, this. Don't you think?"
"Yes, Your Majesty. I do think so too." The corners of her lips curled, and just from the side, I could glimpse how dazzling it was—pure happiness.
'For something so trivial?' I could understand how.
But time didn't give me much space to take it in and think about it.
Because the next moment—
I heard Vivian's voice.
"Your Majesty… we are here."
Before me was a massive door to the elders. I took a deep breath in, shelving every other thing—
And took a step.
~Ioana~“Her Majesty, Ioana makes her entrance!” I gave a slight nod to the man who stood by the door, who yelled out.The burly men on either side of the massive door, with taut muscles, pulled open the doors, and the room unveiled itself to me.I had only one word to describe it with—magnificent.Towering ceilings, chandeliers, marble flooring so polished the hem of my gown was reflected back at me with each swish, a red rug rolled down the middle from the entrance up to…The corner of my lips twitched. A semicircle of elderly wolves, one at the center—Elder Thalvorn—staring straight at me with a frown on his face. By his side was Elder Caldren, who glowered. After him was Elder Ysara—she had her eyes closed shut, her face blank. After her was Elder Barion—he eyed me over and over, as if checking for something.By his left was Elder Mirelda, her lips pursed. She shot me a complicated look I couldn't understand before throwing her face away. The robed elder remained mysterious, and t

~Ioana~"All of them. Not even one. No, they're extinct way before our time." Shutting Selenara’s gaze towards us.His fingers clenched, and what seemed like frustration flickered through his eyes too fast for me to see the second time.I held my breath. For some reason, it suddenly became harder to breathe, like the air just wouldn't pass through my lungs. My chest heaved, a sharp pain shooting through my chest.I clutched at it, massaging my chest with a grimace on my face. "So what happened next?" I asked, my voice dropping far below a whisper. The question still sat in my mind—if the royals went extinct, how did they become the next royals? And who was strong enough to massacre the whole royal lineage, and for what reasons? But before I could voice out the questions plaguing me, Alessandro stood up from the chair. "I believe I've satisfied your curiosity."'No, actually, you haven't in the lightest. Instead, you brought more questions.' That was my thought, but I couldn't say it.
~Ioana~A fleeting smile crossed my lips, Vivian still remembered my words earlier. He walked behind me for some reason that left me both puzzled and slightly frazzled. The piercing stare boring holes into my neck was just too intense to ignore.Wasn't he a strict follower of rules? Usually, a person of higher rank walks before one of lower rank.I halted before the chairs, gesturing over to them, "Your Majesty, the Prince," the title flowed somewhat awkwardly from my lips."Please, have a seat." This time I waved, sighing in relief after he sat, sitting right afterwards. My finger dug into the robe, clenching it. The place settled down into silence."My brother, Radu, has always been mischievous." This time, to my shock, it was Alessandro that broke the tense silence. "Sometimes his mischievousness can cross limits." He glanced at me. "You have to understand that—"His gaze dropped down to the empty gap between us, narrowing down on the obvious four identical dent-like marks left by
~Ioana~With a soft thud, Vivian gently set the jug filled with water on the table. But froze when she noticed the frown marring my lips."Is something the matter, Madame?"She asked tentatively.I shook my head but paused. 'Why should I endure it?'"Vivian…" I called out to her."Yes, Madame?""Replace the table… looking at it spoils my appetite…""I'll do that right away, Madam—"At this time, someone rapped on the door. We both froze still. It was slow and powerful, knocking only thrice before stopping. I and Vivian shared a glance—mine full of inquiry and hers trepidation. Her fingers shook, intensifying when I asked,"Vivian, did you tell the kitchen to bring us more cookies?" Tilting my head to ask."N-No, Madame," she stuttered. "I also wasn't expecting anyone."For some reason, my usually swift response was lagging."Stay here. I'll go check." I stood, the chair making a low shuu shifting backward against the rug."Madame!" Vivian exclaimed, alarmed. "I'll go instead," she gra
~Ioana~“Listen up.” Prince Radu said, clapping twice.“We both know how Alessandro is. He treasures that throne more than any other thing—he’s been fighting for it since he was born, and only the goddess knows the bloody things he’s done to keep it.”Prince Radu's index finger tapped the table in a rhythmic, unsettling sound that echoed through the room.Tap tap tap.“I'll help you… we can partner together. It's very simple… I’ll protect you from his wrath and you’ll… help me in return,” Prince Radu said, his voice like a slithering serpent. His eyes flashed with cunning and cruelty, weaving a verbal cage of deceit. The worst thing? Despite knowing, I was falling for it.Today I felt it—Alessandro—his eyes on me changed. I wasn't sure if it's a good or bad change. If I was to follow what he's saying, then it's a bad change… and he's planning something. If it was before, I would have joined hands with him out of fear. But the
~Ioana~Vivian's grip on the doorknob trembled. Even from where I sat, I could see veins popping out, showing the force she used. "Aren't you going to let me in?" As if not seeing how wrong the atmosphere was, Radu’s grin widened.I kept down the cup of tea in my grip, thoughts flittered through my mind as fast as the wind. Why was he here? This late in the night? Smoothing the creases that formed from my movements, taking advantage of the fact that he couldn't see me, I stood up, walked to the closet, and took out a robe, fastening it. Once I was done and properly covered, I cleared my throat."Vivian, allow him in."Vivian’s head snapped to mine in disbelief, but my face was stern, hiding my thoughts—or I hoped I did successfully.I gave in, widening the space between the door and she. Radu weaved through it, sauntering into my room, his eyes locked on me. Vivian retreated in search of a chair, and when she found it, before she could properly place it across the bed's side table use
~Ioana~After the discovery, the bath passed silently. It was our most quiet one yet, each person too engrossed in their thoughts to speak. Well, it was mostly I who was too engrossed in my thoughts while feeling the soft oohs Vivian let out when she was washing my hair, sighing enviously, complimenting: "Your hair is so pretty, Your Majesty."Before the water became cold and my fingers became wrinkly, I stepped out, a towel wrapped around me, into the room to get dressed. After I was dressed and well prepared for the night, I sat on the bed, drinking tea and munching on some light snacks that Vivian, the ever-reliable one, had skillfully snuck out of the kitchen.Vivian, also recovered from her silent mode, chirped beside me, chattering about different topics at once, and my mind at one point wandered until she mentioned—Just then she said.“Sometimes it almost feels that the prince and the elders are in a secret battle we’re not privy to…”Raising a brow, “Why do you think so?” I a
~Ioana~Alessandro gave me a lingering look. It was complicated—something I couldn't decipher easily—but something about it made my shoulders heavy. It descended on me like a blanket. My fingers went up to my chest, rubbing my heart to get rid of the stuffiness. He spun around, the first person to exit, his ceremonial red cape fluttering behind him, but for some reason, he looked desolate—lonely. But that shouldn't be possible… right?“The coronation ends here for now until we can get more answers to the peculiarity that occurred today. Until then, I bid all of you a goodnight.” That was Elder Thalvorn's closing message. With that, he stepped backward, away from the eyes of the crowd. But just as Elder Thalvorn got close to me, he paused, as if he wanted to say something to me. His mouth opened, then closed, a triumphant gleam streaking past his eyes that I couldn't understand. What’s he happy for?Elder Thalvorn continued walking out of the balcony through the doors. With his exit, t
