~Ioana~

"Okay, okay," he wheezed, coming to a halt.

"It's your other personality—that is, if you have one. It could be a personality that was birthed from negativity. It sprouts and one day takes over your body.

If that was it, you'll be forever locked in your own body while the personality takes over everything.

Your friends. Your family. Your love. Your dreams. Your life."

Each of those words hit me like a sledgehammer, shattering every resistance.

"You can understand my distress. I didn't know which of the two you were facing. As far as I know, you could be lost forever."

"But isn't it possible to come back?" I asked, my voice light as the wind.

"I don't know—maybe." He shrugged. "But isn't it better, as they say, prevention is better than cure? Even if you manage to come back—after how long? Can you still cope? What if the personality now has new friends, family, now a criminal? Years might have passed."

  • His Captive, His Mate, His Queen    Chapter 96: Warning

~Ioana~Two days later.I ate my words as lunch. It all started last night, I was walking down the hallway when I was stopped by my mother. She seemed sad, shoulders sagged, but immediately she saw me she was like a drowsy person injected with caffeine. She clutched onto my arm.It was so fast I couldn't react, then the next thing that she did astonished me. She sobbed, tears after tears. Bitterness ran down her face."I've been a very terrible mother," she said, "and it's even more ironic that I've always known that and did nothing. Even when your eyes screamed for help, I turned away, and now we need help from that very same person."It's too much to ask for forgiveness." She took a deep breath.I was frozen. She didn't ask my forgiveness, she didn't push the blame, neither did she beat round the bush. Instead, she owned it, and that… that surprised me.Something trembled in my heart, it began to shed when she said further:"I know you've found a place for us. The guards informed us

  • His Captive, His Mate, His Queen    Chapter 95: Don't you have a Room?

~Ioana~It was mother that gave in first. I didn't think she had as much burden as father. She didn't see it as humiliation, or at least not the same way he did. Perhaps she had already gotten the sign when I threw my face to the side when she tried to plead with me—Just the same way she threw her face away the night of my banishment.Anyway, it wouldn't take a pound of flesh from her. Father's jaw ticked in anger, but he was equally helpless, his shoulders slumped. And he knelt, his head bowed, hands fisted by his side."You can rise."For the first time, I said something. Then immediately took the lead. "Why are you here?" It was a direct question. No buttering up. No affection in my voice. It was the same tone you discussed the weather with an absolute stranger. No—that even had more emotion in it.It gave no chance to manipulate things into a scene of waterworks, at least that's what I tho

  • His Captive, His Mate, His Queen    Chapter 94: Bitter Reunion

~Ioana~Popping with my joints, a sigh of relief escapes my parted lips. Everyone else has been dismissed, it was just the bigger official and I. "You did a good job pretending to be oblivious to his condition." He flinched, confused."Oblivious?" he stammered.I sneered. "Oh, don't take me as a fool. I might have not said anything, but you were part of the persons who never gave him help when he needed it, weren't you?"He shook his head, wanting to deny, but I shot him down. "I'll have this investigated to the end, and don't let me discover otherwise."But for now… I'll trust your words." I grinned, and he flinched. "You can leave." It was a dismissal, but I spoke, halting him in his panicked retreat. "By the way, what's his name?""Caleb, Your Highness.""Good." That was my only comment as I watched him wobble out of the hall. The double doors slammed shut behind him."Caleb," I called out again. It faded. Then I snapped out of it as I saw the guards lining the wall. That's right,

  • His Captive, His Mate, His Queen    Chapter 93: Result

~Ioana~I would be lying if my heart didn't squeeze in my chest at his words. I understood very well. It was sympathy-evoking, but sympathy alone wouldn't and can't excuse what he had done in the end."I will…" I cleared my throat. It was hoarse, emotions choked me. Images flickered through my head: a sickly young girl dying slowly, waiting for her elder brother to come back from work, and the elder brother's desperation watching his sister being eaten away.Something has to be done. Surely, they won't go unharmed."Treat your sister," I coughed out. It was a little awkward to say that, especially as his jaw dropped comically to the floor. His eyes glistened with tears. Oh goddess, not the waterworks, I pleaded inwardly. It would make everything ten times worse.Fortunately, it seemed he heeded my plea and only sniffled, hanging his head, moving his face out of my sight. "Your Majesty is gracious," he said, but somewhere in that I felt a hidden sarcasm.I waved it off. Even if he mean

  • His Captive, His Mate, His Queen    Chapter 92: My Loyalty

~Ioana~"I cut him off. 'Do you want to give me willingly,' I stressed the word willingly, 'or have it ceased from you?' I gave him two different options. He rolled his eyes, clenched his jaws, he looked like he was struggling with himself. Just a little more. I drummed my fingers against my chair. Then his shoulders slumped. Bingo! I wanted to snap my fingers but held myself back."I will give it by myself.""Good." My lips stretched into a chilling smile. "Now hand it over." I opened my palm, waiting for him, leaving him stunned. He gaped at me. "Your Majesty…" His fingers curled around the edges of the ledger. He didn’t want to give it to me.It was obvious, but unfortunately, it wasn’t an option or a suggestion. I stared down at him, the corner of my lips frozen in the same curl. I thought it should be so obvious.I only had to share a glance with one of the guards stationed by the wall. No words were exchanged, but he understood. Dislodging himself, his metal clinked against its

  • His Captive, His Mate, His Queen    Chapter 91: Truth Glitters

~Ioana~She couldn't speak. Her lips opened about to say something, then she shut them back, but her eyes seemed to contain a faint pleading in them and fear."I believe I made myself clear, my words weren't vague, right?" I asked her, but it wasn't a question, it was rhetorical.Trembling, she shook her head from side to side, but words refused to come out of her lips.As she shook, something caught the light, faintly shimmering. My eyes zeroed in on it."Do you love glitter?" I changed the question. Taken aback, she froze so still, not even breathing.I snapped my fingers, snatching her back to reality."No, Your Majesty," this time the voice I wondered where it had disappeared to came back. It was incredibly firm.I nodded. "Right? Glitters are for children. I can't imagine why an adult would paste glitter on their skin."She nodded, agreeing with my words. "I dislike— no, I hate gl
