Sadie’s POV
I whipped my head towards the Lycan Prince seated in the shadows. He abruptly stood up, his movement startlingly fluid for someone his size. Standing at his full height, he was much taller than I’d expected. Lycans were naturally more robust than werewolves, possessing a superior strength. But the Lycan Prince was even more imposing. I gasped despite myself as my eye scanned his broad shoulders, his perfectly chiseled muscles apparent under his tailored clothing.
His very presence demanded attention, and as he rose, all eyes shifted from the golden slate to him. The she-wolves stared in admiration as he stepped out of the shadows, finally revealing his face for the first time.
The moment his full face came into view, the crowd fell silent. His thick brows and full lashes framed his piercing blue eyes, the color of the ocean and just as deep. He had a perfectly sculpted nose that sat directly above a set of sensual, thick lips. His jawline was sharp enough to cut stone. My eyes landed on his thick, black hair that fell over one eye, and my breath caught in my throat.
He was undeniably the most striking man I’d ever seen. My heart hammered in my chest as I tried to maintain my composure.
His eyes were fixed on me and I felt myself flush. His gaze didn’t waver as he strode towards me with impossibly long legs. His gaze was unrelenting and intense, so much so that I could only glance at him for moments at a time before my eyes naturally averted. My pulse raced in a mixture of awe and nervous energy that flooded all my senses.
He came and stood beside me, and in front of the entire pack, he reached for my hand. The envy was palpable on each and every she-wolf’s face.
His voice rang out, firm and commanding, leaving no room for doubt.
“She is my Luna.”
Shock rippled through the crowd. Then the crowd erupted into murmurs of agreement. I wasn’t just a she-wolf, I heard them whisper. I was the Alpha’s daughter, born of Alpha blood, destined for greatness. They’d always known it, they told one another.
But just then, a sharp voice cut through the murmurs of awe and reverence.
Delphine stepped forward. “Sadie already has a mate,” she declared in protestation. “Everyone in the pack knows this.” Her eyes landed on the Lycan Prince as she jutted out her shin. “Go on, just ask her.”
Her words were like a spark that ignited a fire of whispers in the crowd. Both Lycans and werewolves respected and revered the mate bond. It was sacred, a divine blessing from the Moon Goddess herself.
“Is this true?” the Lycan Prince asked, furrowing his brows in confusion, his voice low.
I lowered my head. I knew what he was thinking. If it was true, if I did in fact have a mate, then not even the Lycan Royal family could force me to break that bond. I could read his thoughts on his face.
This was the very reason my father had ordered the wolf suppressant. It was a desperate measure, yes, but he’d been desperate to sever my connection to Karter. It’s why he secretly locked me away for a week and forced the injection, weakening my wolf. If anyone knew what he’d done, he’d been seen as a disgrace. Tampering with someone’s wolf was a serious thing, as was locking up your own daughter. So for the sake of my father’s reputation, I didn’t say anything about it.
Instead, I lifted my chin and addressed the crowd, my voice steady despite my racing heart and the turmoil inside of me.
“My mate and my sister betrayed me,” I said coldly. “The two people I trusted most in the world plotted against me. They lured me away from the pack so they could usurp my father and take the Alpha title for themselves. They have put the safety of our entire pack at risk for their own selfish gains.”
Karter broke free from the crowd, stepping forward.
“That’s a lie!” he yelled, his voice filled with defiance. “I never betrayed you, Sadie. I love you. I always have. You’re the one twisting the truth.”
My anger flared. I couldn’t believe his audacity. Not even two hours ago he’d scoffed right in my face, calling me cold and frigid, declaring his love for my sister. I lunged at him and ripped his shirt wide open, exposing the faint red kiss marks all over his chest.
“See?” I said, pointing at his chest. He glared at me but I didn’t care. “These marks were left by Delphine, my own sister! While I was locked up in the dungeon my mate was kissing my sister! The Prince’s soldiers can confirm it if these kiss marks aren’t proof enough.”
Everyone in the crowd turned to the Prince’s soldiers, including the Lycan Prince’s. The soldiers all gave a solemn nod, affirming my claim. They’d all seen and heard Karter and Delphine over the past week.
“That’s enough, Sadie,” Karter snapped at me.
But it wasn’t. I’d awoken the Sacred Slate. I was the chosen one, destined to be the Lycan Prince’s Luna. Karter had broken my heart. I wanted him to feel the same pain.
Fighting back my own heartbreak, I straightened my back and turned my eyes to Karter.
“I, Sadie Ambrose, reject you, Karter Cromwell, as my mate.” I said the words firmly, my voice strong with finality.
Karter crumpled forward, bending over, crippled by the physical pain of the broken matebond. But Delphine glared at me, her face twisted with jealousy. She knew that I could be the Prince’s Luna, now that my matebond was broken.
“She doesn’t even have a wolf,” Delphine shouted, her voice dripping with venom. “How can she be Luna?”
I was shocked that Delphine had stooped so low. She knew that my father had forced me to take a wolf suppressant. She always knew that I couldn’t tell anyone that for fear of ruining my father’s reputation.
She smiled at me sardonically.
“Isn’t that true, sister? You’re wolfless.”
I bit my lip, fighting the urge to explain. I had a wolf, but it was suppressed. I couldn’t tell the prince that though. I couldn’t bring that type of shame onto my father.
So I said nothing. But my silence spoke volumes.
I’d awoken the Sacred Slate. I was going to win the Luna selection, and I had to, to save my father. But now the Prince thought I was wolfless. How could I prove I had a wolf without exposing my father.
I glanced nervously at the Prince. The tension was thick in the air. He stared at me, his brow furrowed, his sharp eyes fixed on my face as though he were searching for answers.
The Lycan royal family would never accept a wolfless Luna. Everyone knew that.
In the next moment, the prince’s piercing gaze locked straight onto me. I clenched my fists, my heart pounding wildly in my chest.
Would he choose me?Sadie’s POV“Griffin, can you please leave me and Delilah alone for a moment?” I asked. His face fell and he shook his head.“Why?”“It’s personal,” I told him. I wasn’t afraid of Princess Delilah anymore. When she found out what I was going to do, she would no longer be a threat to me.“I don’t want to leave you. Not even for a minute,” Prince Griffin said, squeezing my hands. My heart fluttered at his words. He was so different now that we were confirmed mates. Perhaps this side of him had always been there, he’d just been holding back because he wasn’t sure about us. But now that he was sure, he didn’t need to restrain himself any longer.“Please,” I said to him. “It will only take us a moment.”He leaned in and kissed my forehead. “I can’t deny you anything,” he sighed, his breath hot on my forehead. “Take your time, my love. I’ll be waiting right outside the door.”Then he rose from the bed and strode right past his sister. As soon as the door clicked shut, Princess Delilah came
Sadie’s POVPrincess Delilah stormed into the room. She took one look at me and her brother sitting closely together on the bed and her eyes flew open in shock.“What are you doing?” she demanded.“Sadie is wounded. I’m healing her,” Prince Griffin said as though licking someone’s wounds were a perfectly natural occurrence.Princess Delilah must have known I was back at the palace. Why else would she be in here? I didn’t know how much she knew though. Did she know that Prince Griffin, her own brother, had saved me?I didn’t know what to do. Princess Delilah narrowed her eyes, giving me a threatening look. She was trying to intimidate me.“Why are you here?” Prince Griffin asked, his voice dry. “This is my personal bedroom, Delilah. You have no right just barging in like this.”“I have every right,” she replied haughtily. “I demand to speak to Sadie at once.”She stood, her hands on her hips, glaring at me. I shuddered. Prince Griffin didn’t know yet that his sister was behind all of t
Sadie’s POVI felt Prince Griffin’s lips hovering just inches from mine. Instinctively, I tried to pull back, but his broad, warm hand slid to my waist, holding me firmly in place. His touch was gentle yet resolute as he guided me back onto the bed, his movements deliberate and unhurried. The intensity in his gaze burned like a roaring flame, locking onto me with a heat that made my breath catch.I wasn’t sure what he was going to do. All I could do was wait, my entire body on fire in anticipation. Then, his soft, moist lips brushed delicately over the wound on my collarbone. His lips were electric. “Mm…” A sound escaped my lips before I could stop it, a quiet moan born of pure instinct. Had I just made that sound? I couldn’t believe I did! My cheeks flushed and embarrassed, I pressed my lips together tightly, determined not to make another sound.Turning my head to the side, I avoided looking at Griffin’s dangerously handsome face. Instead, I choose to focus on his arms braced on eit
Sadie’s POVPhysical intimacy? My face flushed at the words. I wasn’t sure what he meant, but I had a few guesses. This was really what the physician had recommended. That Prince Griffin and I become…physically intimate with one another. “What exactly do you mean?” I couldn’t help but ask, my voice tinged with both curiosity and apprehension.“Take off your clothes,” Griffin said seriously. For a moment, I thought he was joking. He couldn’t be serious. He couldn’t honestly expect me to undress myself in front of him. I’d never been naked in front of man before. Surely, he was just kidding, trying to lighten the serious mood. But the unwavering look on his face told me he was doing no such thing. In fact, his expression told me there was nothing funny about this, not to him. “But I’m injured… I can’t—” I stammered. My body was a mess. It was covered in bruises and whip marks. This wasn’t exactly the way I imagined my body would look the first time I exposed it to a man. Even if I
Sadie’s POVMy wolf?My mind flashed back to the room at the whorehouse where I’d been tortured. For a brief moment, Magenta had appeared to protect me. She’d tossed the rogue off of me and my heart had swelled at the sound of her voice. But the moment had been fleeting. As quickly as Magenta appeared, she vanished again. I’d been frantic, desperate for her to stay with me. But she needed time. Yes, that’s what Magenta had said.Prince Griffin’s sharp voice broke through my thoughts. “How did you sense your first mate?”“My wolf felt him,” I replied cautiously. I found his question a little odd, but he obviously had somehow found out about my wolf.“So you do have a wolf?” Griffin pressed, his gaze piercing. I averted my eyes. I could tell what he was thinking. If I had a wolf, why didn’t I tell him? But that was the problem. I couldn’t tell him before. And my inability to tell him had been one of my biggest struggles here at the castle. It was also the reason Prince Griffin was disap
Sadie’s POVWe drove back to the palace and when we got there, Prince Griffin opened the door and lifted me out of the car. I wrapped my arms around his neck as he carried me back through the palace door. I wasn’t sure where he was taking me, but I soon recognized the familiar pictures hanging on the wall of his corridor.Inside his room, he gently placed me on the bed and immediately called for the royal physician. Moments later, the physician burst into the room, his medical bag in hand.“What happened?” the physician asked, his eyes wide at the fragile state of me.“She was tortured,” Prince Griffin said. “Examine her at once.”The physician nodded and approached me. He did his examination as carefully as he could, but even the soft touch of his hands made me grit my teeth in agony.“Here love, take this,” he said with sympathetic eyes. “It’s for the pain.” He placed a small pill on my tongue. I gratefully swallowed it down, praying it would provide a quick respite to the constant
Sadie’s POVI was so grateful that Griffin had saved me but I felt protective of him. Princess Delilah’s secret was dark and I didn’t want Prince Griffin to have to face the ugly truth or to witness anything I myself couldn’t bear to see.In fact, it was something I didn’t want to face at all. I didn’t know whether or not the rogue knew Princess Delilah’s name, but I decided to intervene. It was best if Prince Griffin didn’t know.“Griffin,” I murmured softly after a long silence, my eyes still tightly shut.I felt Prince Griffin immediately move to my side. He waited quietly for me to speak again.“My wounds… they hurt,” I said weakly. It was the truth, my wounds burned and stung and throbbed, but they’d been like that this entire time. I only brought attention to my wounds in that moment to distract Prince Griffin. I was hoping that his concern for my injuries would make him leave this awful place quickly, without ever finding out that his sister was behind all of this. If Prince
Sadie’s POVI opened my eyes, just a crack, to caution a quick peek, but the moment I did, I wished I hadn’t. The room was a blood bath, mangled pieces of the rogues everywhere. It was one of the most horrifying things I’d ever seen. I slammed my eyes back shut and vowed to not open them again.“I want answers,” Prince Griffin demanded. “And I want them now. You saw what I did to the other rogues. I have no problem ripping off your hands too if you don’t start talking.”The rogue stammered. “I was just… just following orders! My boss told me to pick up the delivery, that’s all I know. You’re asking the wrong person.”“Delivery?” Prince Griffin asked.“Yes,” the man said, his voice riddled with fear. “Someone sold her to our auction house. They… they told us to break her in first…”“Break her in?” Prince Griffin interrupted. I could tell by his voice that he didn’t like the sounds of those words. “What do you mean by ‘break her in’?”“She… told us to torture her…”My mind flashed back
Sadie’s POV“Which hand did you use to touch her?” Griffin’s icy voice cut through the air, laced with authority that made it impossible to ignore. The rogues looked positively horrified. I didn’t blame them. Prince Griffin’s authority hung so thickly in the air it was almost as if we could touch it. I couldn’t see it because I still had my eyes shut tightly. But I could feel it. “I-I didn’t… I swear, I didn’t—” one of the rogues stammered. I peeked my eyes open for a split second and saw that the rouge was trembling.Griffin glared at him. I shut my eyes again. “Lying won’t do you any good now,” Griffin replied, his tone as cold and final as death itself.I could imagine what the rogue looked like in that moment. He was likely wringing his hands in front of him, his face pale. “I... I’ll give up my left hand! As punishment… please, let me go. I don’t want to die. I’m begging you.” I heard the rogue plead desperately, his voice breaking at the end of his sentence. His left hand? Had
