Chapter 2

Author: Rainless Day
"I don't want to see any of you celebrate Eli's birthday!" I shrieked, acting like any irritating, spoiled brat. I could still remember the way Mom and Dad looked at me back then.

I didn't even flinch when Dad's hand came down, repeatedly striking me. I remembered Mom crying nearby, though she never stepped in to stop him.

Eli was the one who threw himself over to hug me, shielding me with his frail body. "Please don't hit Ash anymore, Dad!"

He shielded me tightly even though his voice was trembling as he said, "It's all my fault… It's entirely my fault…"

That night, Eli sneaked into my bedroom to slip half a chocolate bar he had saved into my hand. He had a scratch on his wrist, which was caused by the chair when he shielded me earlier that day. He suddenly said, "I'm so sorry, Ash…"

He carefully caressed my swollen cheek and said softly, "I'll be gone for good soon, so no one will be taking things from you anymore, Ash…"

In the living room, Mom tenderly touched Eli's face, tucking away the loose strands of hair from his forehead. She then said softly in a voice tinged with exhaustion, "You should just leave him be, Eli. You know very well that brat has been jealous of you since he was young."

I was stunned. I was indeed jealous of Eli. I was jealous of the total preference heaped on him, the new sneakers he wore, and how Mom would stay by his side all night when he was sick with a fever.

I envied that even though he had just a single day left to live, he remained the most precious person to Mom and Dad.

I floated toward Eli. I wanted to hold his hand and tell him that I was truly running a fever and that my head genuinely ached, but my hand passed right through his body, as if passing through a plume of mist.

I froze in midair, staring down at my transparent fingers in confusion. I looked back at the closed wooden door of the storage room, where a faint light spilled through the gap at the bottom. I drifted over, passed through the door, and saw myself curled up among the clutter inside.

I realized then that I was already dead. I had died even before Eli's countdown reached zero.

I suddenly felt my memories surging toward me like tidal waves, bringing with them the musty smell of forgotten years.

If there were only one piece of candy at home, it would always belong to Eli. If the only apple were cut in two, the bigger half would go to him and the smaller half to me. Eli would always have new clothes to wear, while I wore his old hand-me-downs, which were covered in patches.

Eli was also the only one who had the privilege of listening to bedtime stories.

Mom sounded as gentle as ever as she read "The Little Sky-Farer", "The Fables of Whispering Woods", and other tales concerning the stars and the moon. She would only ever read those stories to Eli, though.

I secretly pressed myself against the gap in the door and listened as Mom asked gently, "What story would you like to hear today, Eli?"

"I want to listen to the story about the mermaids," Eli replied.

Mom started reading the story, her voice like a nocturnal stream, gliding softly along.

I crouched outside the door with my arms around my knees, listening to the beautiful story as a tight sensation gripped my heart. I couldn't help but wonder why Mom wouldn't read me those bedtime stories as well.

In the summer of my seventh year, our neighbors gifted us a chicken, which Mom turned into a stew.

There were two golden, glistening drumsticks sitting right at the top of the pot, and when it was dinnertime, Mom carefully placed both drumsticks onto Eli's plate.

"You should have more, Eli. It'll nourish your body."

I looked at the plain mashed potatoes and a few pieces of broccoli on my own plate before bursting into tears. "Why did Eli get both drumsticks? I want some too! I want to eat drumsticks too!"

Grandma sighed and reached out to stroke my head, but she stopped halfway and withdrew her hand. She then said softly, "I know, Ash. I know everything."She turned around, took an apple out of the cabinet, rinsed it, and put it in front of the urn. She then spoke as though she were really talking to me, saying, "You should try this. I don't have much here, but the apple is really sweet. Give it a taste, Ash."I looked at the bright red apple and felt a sharp pang in my heart. I had never once eaten an entire apple while I was still alive. Whenever there was an apple at home, it was always sliced in half, with the bigger piece being given to Eli and the smaller piece to me. Eli would always secretly give me a bit more of his share, claiming he wasn't hungry and that he didn't like apples.Yet, now that I was dead, Grandma actually gave me an entire apple. I floated across and crouched down before the apple. I couldn't actually eat it, but I could still catch the whiff of its crisp,

Grandma sneered. "You want to make it up to him? Ash is already dead, Linda. What could you possibly give him now? I'm telling you right now—I'm not leaving Ash's ashes with you since none of you deserve them."Dad dropped to his knees, too. "Please let us keep Ash, Mom! We truly know our mistake now, so from now on, we'll—" Grandma cut him off, her voice trembling while asking, "What do you plan to do from now on? It's already too late for that. You both killed Ash. You'll be in debt to Ash for the rest of your lives, Frank and Linda—something that can never be repaid."She tightened her grip on the urn and walked away after saying that."Mom!""Please don't go, Mom!"Mom and Dad threw themselves forward to stop her, but Grandma pushed them aside with a single movement."Get out of the way! You'd better not touch Ash! You're not worthy of him!" Grandma shrieked, her eyes bloodshot. She walked out of the yard and into the drizzling rain, clutching the urn tightly. She walked

Grandma sidestepped to avoid Mom. She then glared coldly at her and said, "Ash is already dead. You were the one who locked him up for the night. How long are you going to live in denial, Linda?"Mom slumped to the floor, covering her face and sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry, Ash. Please come back to me..."Dad kneeled on the floor and repeatedly struck his forehead against the ground with a heavy, rhythmic thumping sound."Please don't do this, Dad…" Eli cried, reaching out to pull him back, only to be violently pushed aside by Dad."It's all my fault! It's entirely my fault!"Grandma took in the family and the sheer absurdity of the scene before shutting her eyes. She regained her composure once she opened her eyes. She then carried me to the door and said, "I'm going to buy Ash's burial clothes.""Mom!" Dad suddenly ran over and clung to Grandma's leg. "Please don't take him away! Please don't leave with Ash!"Grandma looked down at Da

Grandma said, "Lay Ash down, Frank."Dad's hands trembled, but he still held onto me tightly. He then choked out, "Ash isn't dead, Mom. He's just—"Grandma cut him off, saying, "He's already dead, Frank. He died from a fever after you locked him up in the storage room the entire night."Dad seemed to be struck to the core by Grandma's remarks. He started trembling uncontrollably as he shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "I-It's not like that. I only wanted him to quiet down... I just didn't want him disturbing Eli… I didn't know he was running a fever… I really had no idea…"Grandma was utterly disappointed. "You knew everything, Frank. Ash cried out, saying that his head hurt and that he had a fever. You heard it, and Linda heard it, too. You two just chose not to believe him."Mom bolted out of the room and collapsed at Grandma's feet. "It's all my fault!"She wailed, grabbing onto Grandma's pant legs. "You can hit me or even yell at me! I'm the one who killed Ash! I

Dad's hand remained frozen in place for a very long time. He then slumped to the floor, bawling like a child. He cried as he spoke, his voice hoarse and nearly impossible to make out. "H-He's dead… Ash is actually dead… Ash is dead…"Eli was still standing in the doorway. His hand on the doorframe was shaking, while his whole body was trembling. He looked at Mom and Dad crying inside the storage room, then at the small, lifeless body in the corner. He then murmured, "Ash…"He suddenly blacked out and collapsed to the floor."Eli!" Mom shrieked, throwing herself forward and catching him right before he collapsed onto the floor. In that instant, chaos erupted in the living room.…It was already noon when Eli regained consciousness.Mom sat on the side of the bed, her eyes swollen and bloodshot from all the crying. She held his hand and said repeatedly, "You're alright now, Eli. It's all over now. It's good that you're alright, Eli…"Eli opened his eyes and stared at the ceilin

"What's the matter?" Mom didn't understand what was happening. He released Eli's hand and took two steps forward, trying to step across the threshold.Dad suddenly reached out an arm to stop her. He spoke in a barely audible whisper, as though terrified of waking or disturbing something, "Hold on."He stood with his back to the light, so I couldn't make out his expression, though I could see that his shoulders were trembling slightly. He stood in the doorway, staring without moving at the small body curled up in the corner.Eli looked out from behind Mom, his face looking even paler in the morning light. He called out softly, his voice filled with a tentative hope, "Ash? Do you hear me, Ash? I'm fine now—I'm not going to die."In the corner, my body remained completely still—not even the rise and fall of breathing could be seen.Mom's smile instantly stiffened. She took another step forward, and this time, Dad didn't stop her. She stepped over the threshold, came up to me, and kne
