Chapter 1

Author: Rainless Day
I suddenly felt my body become weightless. I looked through the old, weathered wooden door panel and saw the warm light in the living room.

Mom and Dad, Linda Mills and Frank Nash, were sitting close to Eli Nash, my elder brother, on the couch. Mom gently patted Eli's back, while Dad kept his head lowered, his shoulders trembling slightly.

Eli wore his only new tracksuit, which was pale blue with a few small star emblems embroidered on the chest. He looked exceptionally pale under the light, his lips almost entirely devoid of color.

He asked softly, his voice thick with a nasal tone, "Is Ash really fine, Mom and Dad? I heard him crying out that his head was hurting…"

"You should just leave him be," Dad said.

Mom agreed with Dad's sentiment. She reached out to tenderly caress Eli's cheek, tucking away the loose strands of hair from his forehead. "Your father is right, Eli. He clearly doesn't have a fever. He's just pretending to be sick to gain sympathy. You have only one day left until you…"

Mom stopped mid-sentence, choking back a sob as her eyes welled up with tears. "You should just look forward to your birthday tomorrow with peace of mind—don't let him ruin your mood."

Eli pursed his lips and remained silent, though his brows furrowed deeper.

I knew he had always felt guilty toward me. After all, for as long as I could remember, all of the family's affection had been poured into him. I had to stare longingly just to get a bite of bread pudding, let alone new sneakers or a new basketball.

Eli, however, would always secretly slip his snacks to me, swap the large sneakers Mom and Dad bought him for a smaller size for me to wear, and always be the first to stand up and protect me whenever Mom and Dad scolded me.

He always said, "I'm sorry, Ash. It's all because of me that you've been mistreated."

Mom and Dad didn't see it that way, though.

Mom sighed, looking at Eli with a gaze full of tenderness and sorrow. "You ought to stop defending him, Eli. That brat has been jealous of you since he was young and couldn't bear to see you doing well. Have you forgotten what happened on your 14th birthday?"

It was during Eli's 14th birthday that I fully grasped the truth that Eli would die. That day, Mom and Dad unprecedentedly bought a cream cake, which had 14 slender candles stuck into it.

Mom carefully lit the candles while Dad held the old camera that had been around for years, wanting to capture one of the few birthdays Eli would have in his life.

I hid behind the door and looked on—at the candlelight glowing on Eli's face, at him closing his eyes to make a wish, and at Mom and Dad trying desperately to hold back their tears.

I rushed out just then. I didn't know what I was thinking back then—maybe it was jealousy, or maybe I just couldn't accept the reality that Eli, who was always so gentle to me, was going to leave.

I overturned the cake with a single push, sending the cream splattering across the floor and the candles rolling into the corner, where they quickly died out.

Grandma sighed and reached out to stroke my head, but she stopped halfway and withdrew her hand. She then said softly, "I know, Ash. I know everything."She turned around, took an apple out of the cabinet, rinsed it, and put it in front of the urn. She then spoke as though she were really talking to me, saying, "You should try this. I don't have much here, but the apple is really sweet. Give it a taste, Ash."I looked at the bright red apple and felt a sharp pang in my heart. I had never once eaten an entire apple while I was still alive. Whenever there was an apple at home, it was always sliced in half, with the bigger piece being given to Eli and the smaller piece to me. Eli would always secretly give me a bit more of his share, claiming he wasn't hungry and that he didn't like apples.Yet, now that I was dead, Grandma actually gave me an entire apple. I floated across and crouched down before the apple. I couldn't actually eat it, but I could still catch the whiff of its crisp,

Grandma sneered. "You want to make it up to him? Ash is already dead, Linda. What could you possibly give him now? I'm telling you right now—I'm not leaving Ash's ashes with you since none of you deserve them."Dad dropped to his knees, too. "Please let us keep Ash, Mom! We truly know our mistake now, so from now on, we'll—" Grandma cut him off, her voice trembling while asking, "What do you plan to do from now on? It's already too late for that. You both killed Ash. You'll be in debt to Ash for the rest of your lives, Frank and Linda—something that can never be repaid."She tightened her grip on the urn and walked away after saying that."Mom!""Please don't go, Mom!"Mom and Dad threw themselves forward to stop her, but Grandma pushed them aside with a single movement."Get out of the way! You'd better not touch Ash! You're not worthy of him!" Grandma shrieked, her eyes bloodshot. She walked out of the yard and into the drizzling rain, clutching the urn tightly. She walked

Grandma sidestepped to avoid Mom. She then glared coldly at her and said, "Ash is already dead. You were the one who locked him up for the night. How long are you going to live in denial, Linda?"Mom slumped to the floor, covering her face and sobbing uncontrollably. "I'm so sorry. It's all my fault. I'm so sorry, Ash. Please come back to me..."Dad kneeled on the floor and repeatedly struck his forehead against the ground with a heavy, rhythmic thumping sound."Please don't do this, Dad…" Eli cried, reaching out to pull him back, only to be violently pushed aside by Dad."It's all my fault! It's entirely my fault!"Grandma took in the family and the sheer absurdity of the scene before shutting her eyes. She regained her composure once she opened her eyes. She then carried me to the door and said, "I'm going to buy Ash's burial clothes.""Mom!" Dad suddenly ran over and clung to Grandma's leg. "Please don't take him away! Please don't leave with Ash!"Grandma looked down at Da

Grandma said, "Lay Ash down, Frank."Dad's hands trembled, but he still held onto me tightly. He then choked out, "Ash isn't dead, Mom. He's just—"Grandma cut him off, saying, "He's already dead, Frank. He died from a fever after you locked him up in the storage room the entire night."Dad seemed to be struck to the core by Grandma's remarks. He started trembling uncontrollably as he shook his head, tears streaming down his face. "I-It's not like that. I only wanted him to quiet down... I just didn't want him disturbing Eli… I didn't know he was running a fever… I really had no idea…"Grandma was utterly disappointed. "You knew everything, Frank. Ash cried out, saying that his head hurt and that he had a fever. You heard it, and Linda heard it, too. You two just chose not to believe him."Mom bolted out of the room and collapsed at Grandma's feet. "It's all my fault!"She wailed, grabbing onto Grandma's pant legs. "You can hit me or even yell at me! I'm the one who killed Ash! I

Dad's hand remained frozen in place for a very long time. He then slumped to the floor, bawling like a child. He cried as he spoke, his voice hoarse and nearly impossible to make out. "H-He's dead… Ash is actually dead… Ash is dead…"Eli was still standing in the doorway. His hand on the doorframe was shaking, while his whole body was trembling. He looked at Mom and Dad crying inside the storage room, then at the small, lifeless body in the corner. He then murmured, "Ash…"He suddenly blacked out and collapsed to the floor."Eli!" Mom shrieked, throwing herself forward and catching him right before he collapsed onto the floor. In that instant, chaos erupted in the living room.…It was already noon when Eli regained consciousness.Mom sat on the side of the bed, her eyes swollen and bloodshot from all the crying. She held his hand and said repeatedly, "You're alright now, Eli. It's all over now. It's good that you're alright, Eli…"Eli opened his eyes and stared at the ceilin

"What's the matter?" Mom didn't understand what was happening. He released Eli's hand and took two steps forward, trying to step across the threshold.Dad suddenly reached out an arm to stop her. He spoke in a barely audible whisper, as though terrified of waking or disturbing something, "Hold on."He stood with his back to the light, so I couldn't make out his expression, though I could see that his shoulders were trembling slightly. He stood in the doorway, staring without moving at the small body curled up in the corner.Eli looked out from behind Mom, his face looking even paler in the morning light. He called out softly, his voice filled with a tentative hope, "Ash? Do you hear me, Ash? I'm fine now—I'm not going to die."In the corner, my body remained completely still—not even the rise and fall of breathing could be seen.Mom's smile instantly stiffened. She took another step forward, and this time, Dad didn't stop her. She stepped over the threshold, came up to me, and kne
