Chapter 1

Prologue

私は広中紗穂（ひろなか さほ）。

二時間前、心臓外科医である夫・広中優一（ひろなか ゆういち）は、娘の広中葵（ひろなか あおい）を手術台に残したまま、相川律子（あいかわ りつこ）のもとへ駆けつけた。

律子は、夫がいつも私たち母娘より優先してきた女だった。

二時間後、私は医師から差し出された死亡診断書を受け取り、震える手で死亡届の欄に名前を書いた。

葵は霊安室へ移され、私はそのストレッチャーの横を、ただ黙ってついて歩いた。

そのときになって、ようやく優一から電話がかかってきた。

通話がつながった瞬間、耳をつんざくような音楽が鼓膜を打った。

向こうはひどく騒がしく、優一の声は信じられないほど明るかった。

「紗穂？なんでこんなに電話してきたんだ。葵が俺に会いたがってるんじゃ――」

「どうして葵を手術台に残して、途中で出ていったの！？」

私は奥歯を噛みしめ、叫ぶように彼の言葉を遮った。

「優一、約束したじゃない。あなたの手で、葵を助けてくれるって……！」

電話の向こうで、優一が息をのむ気配がした。

けれど次に返ってきた声は、まるで大したことではないとでも言うように、ひどく軽かった。

「紗穂、ごめん。俺が悪かった。でも律子のほうが本当に緊急だったんだ。どうしても放っておけなかった。心配するな。新しいドナー心臓の目処はもうついてる。二、三日中には手術を組めるから」

二、三日中？

彼は忘れてしまったのだろうか。

自分の娘が胸を開かれたまま、たった一人で手術台の上に残され、死を待っていたことを。

「優一、葵はもう……」

「優一さん！」

電話の向こうから、女の甘えた声が割り込んできた。

律子の声だった。

「拓馬が、クロの具合がまた悪いって言ってるの。早く見てあげて」

「悪い、紗穂。話は帰ってから聞く。律子の犬の具合が悪いらしい。先に診てくる」

「優一！」

返ってきたのは、ツーツーという空しい音だけだった。

すっかり血の気を失った葵の寝顔を見つめた瞬間、全身から力が抜けた。

私はその場に、崩れるように座り込んだ。

氷点下のように冷えきった霊安室にいるはずなのに、背中にはじっとりと嫌な汗がにじんでいた。

背筋に冷たいものが走り、胸の奥まで凍りついていくようだった。

葵が息を引き取る前に残した言葉が、耳元でよみがえる。

あの子は最後の最後まで、律子の息子・相川拓馬（あいかわ たくま）のことまで心配していた。

「ママ……パパがね、拓馬くんのほうが危ないんだって。助けに行かなきゃいけないんだって……葵、パパが戻ってくるまで頑張るから……だから、パパのこと怒らないで……」

けれど、葵が誰よりも大好きだった「パパ」は、いちばん助けが必要だったその瞬間に、あの子を見捨てた。

優一は、心臓外科では指折りの名医だった。

検査データを見れば、患者の状態くらいすぐに分かる。

だから律子の息子が誤診されていたことに、優一が気づかなかったとは思えない。

ただ、想いを寄せる女の前でいい顔をして、気を引きたかっただけなのだ。

これまでの私なら、見て見ぬふりもできた。

けれど今回は違う。

彼は、私たちの娘を死なせた。

意識がぼんやりとかすむ中、私はスマホを取り出し、父――竹中玄三郎（たけなか げんざぶろう）に電話をかけた。

泣き崩れる私の声を聞いた父は、痛みをこらえるような声で言った。

「紗穂、父さんは三日後には戻る。安心しなさい。あの連中には、必ず報いを受けさせる」

電話を切ると、私は冷たくなった葵を抱きしめた。

がらんとした霊安室に、私の泣き声だけがいつまでも響いていた。

葵は生前、賑やかな場所が苦手な子だった。

だから葬儀には、ごく親しい友人だけを呼ぶことにした。
