“You are looking beautiful, Your Highness.”, Sera, the lady maid said as she tied the last lace of the corset and stepped back, I kept my book aside and glanced at the mirror that another servant placed before me.
The blue eyes on my pale complexion sparkled as I pushed a strand of hair behind my ear. “You may be right today, Sera.” I said with a small chuckle and watched as the rest of the servant girls run around trying to finish getting me ready for breakfast. I opened the book of maps, again and sighed as my fingers traced the map of Valadora.
Sera adjusted the crown on my head as she continued to complement me, her words went through me just like everybody else’s, it made no difference to what I felt. “Is something wrong, my lady?”
I gave her a small smile. “Is my beauty the only thing that you see, Sera?” I asked her to stand up and sending everyone away expect for Sera who walked beside me to the dining room. I looked at her, waiting for her answer. “Please be honest, I don’t want to hear another set of lies early in the morning.”
“No, my lady. You are Princess Erza of the Kingdom of Valadora. You are compassionate, knowledgeable, and possessing uniquely wonderful qualities. There are people who might even say you can be arrogant of your power and beauty at times.” She said with a cheeky smile. “I apologize for my words.” She said with a small bow.
I shook my head. “No, you are right, I can be arrogant at times.” She opened the door and let me inside before closing it behind her. “Good morning, Father.” King Nicholas of Valadora looked up from the scroll and smiled at me.
“Good morning, Erza.” I kissed his cheek before taking my seat at the table. The butler came in and filled my plate with fruits and freshly made scones. Taking a bite, I noticed Father’s eyebrows scrunch at the scroll he was reading.
That only happened when he was worried about something. “What is in the scroll, Father?”
He shakes his head with a small smile. “It is nothing of importance to you, my darling.” When I tried to ask him again, he just raised his palm. “Like I said, you do not have to worry about this. Just enjoy your scones.”
The door opened and my brother, Prince Emerson, walked in greeting my father. He kissed my cheek before sitting down beside father. “Morning, Izzy.”
“Morning brother.” I said with a small sigh. They talked about the upcoming meeting with the ministers for the approval for the new school in the town and the addition of new weaponry, considering the loss of almost quarter of the weapons when they conquered the kingdom of Nepela.
I wanted to comment on the weapons but kept quiet knowing that, whatever I say will be sidelined like always. “I wanted to speak to you about the message we received from the guards of the treasury, after breakfast, son.” Father said passing him the scroll.
I shook my head disappointed, “I just asked you what was in the scroll, and you did not care to answer me, father. I can also help.”
“My dear, you are a princess and incredibly beautiful one too. It is the duty of us, men to protect you from the affairs of the kingdom... You must only prepare yourself for becoming a queen to your future husband and taking care of your children.”
I shook my head. “But I want to be part of the politics, even I am capable of the running the kingdom. I know every stretch of Valadora just like you, father. Even more than brother. If you would just let me out of the palace court for….”
“Izzy, you know that we keep you inside for your safety. And you are always into those books of yours, why do you want to be involved in things you will not understand.”
Feeling no longer hungry, I stood up scraping the chair against the floors, making my father glare at me but then it turned into a look filled with sadness. “If only your mother was alive. She would have taught you how to become the ideal queen, just like she was.”
I had reached the door by then when I turned and looked at him, “I do not want to be an ideal queen, who sits beside her king and watches as he rules. No, I want to be the queen who rules the kingdom. I do not think mother would have understood my pain if she were here.”
“Sister.” My brother said warningly. Ignoring him, I walked out of the doors and saw Sera rushing to come near me.
She walked beside me quietly, knowing from my silence that I was not feeling the best now. Being the most beautiful woman in the kingdom, was harder than anyone imagined. It is difficult to watch people adore you for your beauty and nothing beyond. The words coming out of your mouth would not have influence, because a princess was to just sit and pamper herself while a charming prince takes her away to be a bride.
As I walked towards the garden, I saw the kitchen where everyone was busy with their chores, everyone seemed busy, the busiest place in the palace after the combat ground. Since father and Emerson will be discussing matters only of relevance to them, I might as well use my knowledge to release some of the pent-up anger. I know what I need to do. “Sera, I think I am going to rest for a while. Make sure no one disturbs me until...” I looked at the dial in my hand and smiled. “Until noon.”
“Yes, your highness. Do you want me to get you any herbs from the infirmary?”
I shook my head. “I will be fine, thank you.” As soon as she left my chamber, I closed the doors and walked towards the wardrobe with a small, determined smile on my face, a knock on the door made me stop.
“Darling, are you okay?” Father asked from across the table, I looked up from my plate and gave him a small smile before nodding. “Then why are you playing with your food but not eating a single piece?”Confused I glanced at my plate and noticed the bits and pieces I had made from a single piece of bread; the chicken was not touched, and my glass remained full. “I am fine, father. I was just lost in a thought.”“What thought?” Emerson asked while taking another piece of bread.Erwin snatched the bread from him making Emerson glare at him. “You both are no longer boys but grown men.” Father announced angrily before the throwing and punching began. “If you cannot act your age then please leave the dinner table and go to your chamber.”“My apologies, father.” Both said in unison while still glaring at each other. I couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. It has been days since the King Rory incident and father was busy with discussions with his council and Emerson until yesterday and Er
Father sat back down, while Emerson gave Lavington a questioning glance. Having had enough for a day I stood up and looked at Father. “Father, I shall like to return to my chamber.” I was still upset at him for not giving King Rory a harsher punishment, but I am sure there is a reason otherwise the council members would not have asked to talk to him and moreover I could see how the punishment made Father himself angry. He gave me a small smile despite his conflict of emotions. “Yes, you may.” I curtsied and stepped down from my place and walked past the lieutenant when his voice stopped me in my tracks.“Your Majesty, it is about the princess that I wish to speak of.” Standing this near, I could feel his cold presence and when I looked at him, I could see the faint scar that ran along his jaw, it was still fading which meant it has not been a long while since he got it. I was standing there looking at him, but he did not turn once to even glance at me but kept his eyes on the king. No
“Do you mean the soldier who saved you in the garden?” I nodded, stepping out of my dress. “He is the lieutenant...” When she saw the confusion on my face, she rephrased the words. “Um... like the chief of security? The general is his mentor and when the general retires, it is certain that the lieutenant will take his place.”What was he doing in the garden, then? “How do you know so much?”She gave me a sheepish smile, “My lady, the lieutenant despite his reputed valor and bravery is also known as the rake of the taverns at night.” My brow raised in suspicion making her blush. “Not me… it’s not like I don’t want to.”“Sera!”She blushed a deeper shade of red. “Forgive me my lady, but that is the talk among rest of the girls.”She walked to the wardrobe while I stood there pondering. There was something about the man that sparked a curiosity in me, the general always picks the right men then why did he choose a man with such a repute. A tiny yelp left my lips as my fingers traced over
“You don’t believe in love?” he asked, relaxing, back into the chair. You need to calm down, Erza. “No... uh I mean I don’t know.” He raised his brow. I looked around the empty room. Being alone with this man terrified me and the presence of the soldiers outside doesn’t soothe me. “I don’t like being touched before marriage, your Majesty.” He nodded. “I understand. I just wanted to help you.” he said, raising his hands in surrender. “Take a seat, princess.” I sat down and took my cup again, but the tea was over. Noticing the same he leaned over and poured some more for me. “I don’t know what love is.” I answered his question genuinely. “How can I believe in something I don’t know? I have seen my parents, and they used to say they love each other but being caged in a palace doesn’t really qualify as love, does it?” He gave me a smile, the corners of his eyes wrinkled, the king is handsome, but I wasn’t still sure about him. “I think it differs from person to person. Sometimes you m
“Your Majesty, thank you for the praise but there are women who are more beautiful than me.” I said while walking beside him. I looked at him from the corner of my eye and saw him smiling. “I am sire you shall find a better queen than me.”He stopped walking and kept his eyes on me. “I might.” Is this working? “But they won’t be you and I want only you. Your eyes, your words and my god, your body drives me crazy, princess.”I heard Sera gasp at his words as my own blood boiled. I raised my hand to hit him, but Sera gave me a look that held warning. It wasn’t ladylike to hit a man but what he did is not right either. “Your Majesty, it is time for the lady’s reading.” Sera spoke before I could say anything and nudged me forward towards my chamber.Once I reached my chamber, I glared at Sera. “You shouldn’t have interrupted me, Sera.” I went closer to her. “He disgraced me, Sera and you stopped me from telling him off.”“My lady…” She started but I cut her off.“No, you shall not speak.
I tried to keep a straight face. “It was only once, General. I needed a particular flower for my garden.”He nodded. “I am sure you will find enough flowers in these gardens, better not to go outside for it.” His words held a warning. “I don’t want to be the one bringing you unhappiness.”“But I was...”He held his hand out in front of me. “Just make sure you don’t get caught.” Saying that he left the chamber, leaving me more depressed than I was before. I had to figure out a way to stop these incoming proposals at least until I can find a solution to my problem. -The sunlight boring into my eyes forced me to open my eyes. “Sera, close the curtains. I don’t feel like getting up.”“My lady, you have already missed breakfast. The king inquired about your absence.” Groaning, I opened my eyes fully and sat on the bed. Sera rang the bell near my bed and the doors opened allowing the servants inside.Once dressed I walked out of the chambers and decided to take a walk inside the palace t
