“Miss, you are in the restricted grounds of the forest.” The voice dripped like honey, yet it had a sharp edge to it. “Miss?”
I pinched myself and stood straighter. “I am here on the princess’s order. She had requested for these flowers.” I said trying to keep my voice calm. I could not let anyone know that I go out into the woods on my own without the guards, Father will never let me out again.
“Why does she need the flowers?” Why couldn’t this man just leave?
Backing myself towards Trixie, I took the flowers and placed it in her saddle. “You aren’t supposed to question the princess’s intentions.” I said, getting back on my horse, while I heard him do the same.
Even though I wasn’t facing the man, I could feel his intense stare on me. “Who are you?” He asked, his voice lacing with curiosity. “You are not just a maid in the palace, my lady.” My silence made the man continue, “A maid wouldn’t be wearing those boots and I have heard of the remarkable horse of the princess, on whom you are riding.”
Sitting straighter on my horse, I smiled at his observation, but I couldn’t reveal my identity to him. “I am just an ordinary lady maid, sir. The princess was in a hurry which is why she let me ride her horse. Now if I may leave… my lady waits for me. If I delay any further, she will not be pleased.” I heard him scoff and then remain silent. “Is something wrong, sir?”
“Just not surprised that your Lady will be angry if you are late in getting her flowers. It is not like she can do anything better than just sitting in her chambers and preserve the unrivalled beauty of hers.” This time his voice held pity and disappointment, but I felt the sudden urge to defend myself in front of this man.
“You are speaking of the princess, sir. You can get arrested for the disrespect you hold against her. You cannot judge her for things in which she has no authority over. You don’t see what happens inside the palace, sir.”
I heard his horse neigh, as if tired of this conversation and wanting to go back to riding, well I am not feeling too inclined to keep this going either. “I have only spoken the truth, that the people of Valadora do not see. Putting me to arrest is a decision you will have to make, Your highness.”
He knew I was the princess all along. I turned my face slightly to look at the flowers one last time before I left. “You are wrong about her.” I said pulling Trixie’s reins as she pushed off into a start.
“I do not think I am wrong at what I see, your Highness. And ride carefully, the kingdom shouldn’t lose its precious princess.” He yelled after me, making me kick Trixie harder than I intended too. I should have looked at his face, so that I could send a guard to arrest that arrogant man.
Is this what the people of Valadora think of me? That I am just an arrogant beautiful princess? A tear slipped off my eye before I could stop it making me angrier at myself. I looked at the sundial and knew that my time was up for the day. I thought I would be returning in a better mood today than when I left, but I have only come back feeling worse about myself.
Guiding Trixie back into the stable, I went through the backdoors of the kitchen and changed back to my original clothes as Gwen helped tie my corset, as guilt twinged at my heart. “I apologize for using my title on you, Gwen.”
She smiled at me as she fixed the bracelet on my wrist. “I forgive you, Erza. Did you have an enjoyable time?”
Shrugging, I took the flowers and went into the gardens before finding the perfect spot for the new ones and then picking up a spade to create a bed for the roots. “You can always ask the servants to help you out with this, Izzy.”
Closing my eye, I pressed a finger to my temple. “I am fine, Emerson. I like doing this, and this does not require your intelligence.” I said snapping at him while placing the flowers.
He sighed, “Izzy, are you feeling better? Your lady maid said that you were not feeling good. You even missed painting lessons.” I got up from the ground and brushed the mud of my dress when I saw him waving towards the guards, who brought me a cloth to clean my hands.
“Thank you for your concern, brother but I would like to be left alone for a while.” I left him staring behind me and went back to my chambers after I called Sera, “Why did you tell my brother that I was not feeling well?”
She trembled in her spot, “The prince came to see you after breakfast, and you didn’t want anyone to disturb you.” Getting mad at her isn’t the best solution to all this mess and I will only be proving the man in the forest right. “My lady, should I draw you a bath?” I looked at the frayed ends of my hair, and the dirt on the hem of my dress at the mirror and nodded.
She bowed and left the chamber to prepare my bath and once she returned, she looked like she wanted to spill a secret. “What is it, Sera?”
“Prince Erwin is back.”
“Darling, are you okay?” Father asked from across the table, I looked up from my plate and gave him a small smile before nodding. “Then why are you playing with your food but not eating a single piece?”Confused I glanced at my plate and noticed the bits and pieces I had made from a single piece of bread; the chicken was not touched, and my glass remained full. “I am fine, father. I was just lost in a thought.”“What thought?” Emerson asked while taking another piece of bread.Erwin snatched the bread from him making Emerson glare at him. “You both are no longer boys but grown men.” Father announced angrily before the throwing and punching began. “If you cannot act your age then please leave the dinner table and go to your chamber.”“My apologies, father.” Both said in unison while still glaring at each other. I couldn’t help but let out a small laugh. It has been days since the King Rory incident and father was busy with discussions with his council and Emerson until yesterday and Er
Father sat back down, while Emerson gave Lavington a questioning glance. Having had enough for a day I stood up and looked at Father. “Father, I shall like to return to my chamber.” I was still upset at him for not giving King Rory a harsher punishment, but I am sure there is a reason otherwise the council members would not have asked to talk to him and moreover I could see how the punishment made Father himself angry. He gave me a small smile despite his conflict of emotions. “Yes, you may.” I curtsied and stepped down from my place and walked past the lieutenant when his voice stopped me in my tracks.“Your Majesty, it is about the princess that I wish to speak of.” Standing this near, I could feel his cold presence and when I looked at him, I could see the faint scar that ran along his jaw, it was still fading which meant it has not been a long while since he got it. I was standing there looking at him, but he did not turn once to even glance at me but kept his eyes on the king. No
“Do you mean the soldier who saved you in the garden?” I nodded, stepping out of my dress. “He is the lieutenant...” When she saw the confusion on my face, she rephrased the words. “Um... like the chief of security? The general is his mentor and when the general retires, it is certain that the lieutenant will take his place.”What was he doing in the garden, then? “How do you know so much?”She gave me a sheepish smile, “My lady, the lieutenant despite his reputed valor and bravery is also known as the rake of the taverns at night.” My brow raised in suspicion making her blush. “Not me… it’s not like I don’t want to.”“Sera!”She blushed a deeper shade of red. “Forgive me my lady, but that is the talk among rest of the girls.”She walked to the wardrobe while I stood there pondering. There was something about the man that sparked a curiosity in me, the general always picks the right men then why did he choose a man with such a repute. A tiny yelp left my lips as my fingers traced over
“You don’t believe in love?” he asked, relaxing, back into the chair. You need to calm down, Erza. “No... uh I mean I don’t know.” He raised his brow. I looked around the empty room. Being alone with this man terrified me and the presence of the soldiers outside doesn’t soothe me. “I don’t like being touched before marriage, your Majesty.” He nodded. “I understand. I just wanted to help you.” he said, raising his hands in surrender. “Take a seat, princess.” I sat down and took my cup again, but the tea was over. Noticing the same he leaned over and poured some more for me. “I don’t know what love is.” I answered his question genuinely. “How can I believe in something I don’t know? I have seen my parents, and they used to say they love each other but being caged in a palace doesn’t really qualify as love, does it?” He gave me a smile, the corners of his eyes wrinkled, the king is handsome, but I wasn’t still sure about him. “I think it differs from person to person. Sometimes you m
“Your Majesty, thank you for the praise but there are women who are more beautiful than me.” I said while walking beside him. I looked at him from the corner of my eye and saw him smiling. “I am sire you shall find a better queen than me.”He stopped walking and kept his eyes on me. “I might.” Is this working? “But they won’t be you and I want only you. Your eyes, your words and my god, your body drives me crazy, princess.”I heard Sera gasp at his words as my own blood boiled. I raised my hand to hit him, but Sera gave me a look that held warning. It wasn’t ladylike to hit a man but what he did is not right either. “Your Majesty, it is time for the lady’s reading.” Sera spoke before I could say anything and nudged me forward towards my chamber.Once I reached my chamber, I glared at Sera. “You shouldn’t have interrupted me, Sera.” I went closer to her. “He disgraced me, Sera and you stopped me from telling him off.”“My lady…” She started but I cut her off.“No, you shall not speak.
I tried to keep a straight face. “It was only once, General. I needed a particular flower for my garden.”He nodded. “I am sure you will find enough flowers in these gardens, better not to go outside for it.” His words held a warning. “I don’t want to be the one bringing you unhappiness.”“But I was...”He held his hand out in front of me. “Just make sure you don’t get caught.” Saying that he left the chamber, leaving me more depressed than I was before. I had to figure out a way to stop these incoming proposals at least until I can find a solution to my problem. -The sunlight boring into my eyes forced me to open my eyes. “Sera, close the curtains. I don’t feel like getting up.”“My lady, you have already missed breakfast. The king inquired about your absence.” Groaning, I opened my eyes fully and sat on the bed. Sera rang the bell near my bed and the doors opened allowing the servants inside.Once dressed I walked out of the chambers and decided to take a walk inside the palace t
