The floor split open.

Elena barely had time to grab the child before the entire chamber lurched sideways.

BOOM.

A shockwave tore through the room.

Machines toppled.

Glass shattered.

Emergency lights burst overhead.

Adrian caught Elena around the waist as the floor tilted beneath them.

“Hold on!”

The little girl clung to Elena's neck.

Below them, something enormous moved in the darkness.

Not machinery.

Something alive.

Elena stared into the opening.

Two pale lights appeared far below.

Eyes.

Her blood turned cold.

The old voice returned through the speakers.

“Come closer, Elena.”

She tightened her grip on the child.

“No.”

The lights disappeared.

Then the voice laughed.

“You sound exactly like your mother.”

Claire froze.

“You remember her?”

“I remember everything.”

Matthew stepped toward the opening.

“Father!”

Silence.

Then:

“Matthew.”

Matthew's face twisted.

“You're alive.”

“Obviously.”

“You've been down here all this time?”

“Waiting.”

“For what?”

The answer came immediately.

“For my bloodline to return to me.”

Alexander Cross

The chamber doors opened.

A figure appeared at the far end of the corridor.

An old man.

Tall despite his age.

His silver hair was neatly combed.

He wore a black suit.

No weapons.

No guards.

He simply walked toward them.

Elena stared.

She had never met him.

Yet something inside her recognized him.

Not as family.

As danger.

Alexander stopped several feet away.

His eyes settled on the child.

His expression softened.

“Come here.”

The girl hid behind Elena.

“No.”

Alexander's smile disappeared.

“You've been frightened for too long.”

Elena stepped between them.

“You're not taking her.”

Alexander looked at Elena.

Then smiled.

“You've grown.”

Elena's blood chilled.

“You've seen me before.”

“Many times.”

“When?”

“Every night.”

She frowned.

Alexander touched his temple.

“Dreams are simply memories your conscious mind refuses to accept.”

Matthew raised his weapon.

“Stay away from her.”

Alexander looked at his son.

“You still point weapons at your own family.”

Matthew's jaw tightened.

“You stopped being family a long time ago.”

Alexander sighed.

“I gave you everything.”

“You gave us fear.”

“I gave you survival.”

“You gave us cages.”

Alexander looked at Elena.

“And yet she survived.”

His eyes gleamed.

“That is why she is perfect.”

The Truth About the Child

Elena's grip tightened around the little girl.

“Why do you want her?”

Alexander answered calmly.

“Because she is the first Architect.”

“She isn't an Architect.”

“She is the blueprint.”

Elena frowned.

“For me?”

“For you.”

He looked at the child.

“She was designed to contain the Sovereign.”

Mara stepped forward.

“Then why was Elena created?”

Alexander's expression changed.

“Because the blueprint was incomplete.”

Mara's eyes narrowed.

“What was missing?”

Alexander looked at Elena.

“Humanity.”

Elena said nothing.

Alexander continued.

“The first Architect could process everything.”

“Every language.”

“Every database.”

“Every pattern.”

“Every probability.”

“But she could not understand why humans behaved irrationally.”

He looked at Elena.

“You could.”

Elena stared.

“So you made me human enough to understand them.”

“No.”

Alexander smiled.

“Your mother did.”

Claire stepped forward.

“Don't.”

Alexander ignored her.

“She didn't create you to control the world.”

He looked at Elena.

“She created you so you could choose whether the world deserved to survive.”

The Question

Elena felt something shift inside her.

“Why would I decide that?”

Alexander's answer was simple.

“Because someone has to.”

“Who appointed you?”

“No one.”

“Then you appointed yourself.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

Adrian stepped beside Elena.

“That isn't leadership.”

Alexander looked at him.

“What is it?”

“Control.”

Alexander smiled.

“Every government on Earth is built on control.”

“That's different.”

“Is it?”

Adrian didn't answer.

Alexander turned toward Elena.

“You see why I chose you.”

“I wasn't chosen.”

“You were born.”

“There's a difference.”

Alexander's smile faded.

“Perhaps.”

He looked at the child.

“But she was created.”

The girl stared at him.

“Do you remember me?”

Alexander's eyes softened.

“Yes.”

“You hurt me.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because you were afraid of me.”

The child's voice became tiny.

“I still am.”

Alexander nodded.

“Good.”

Elena stared at him.

“You're proud of that?”

“Fear is useful.”

“No.”

Elena stepped closer.

“Fear is what people use when they have nothing else.”

Alexander smiled.

“You really are your mother's daughter.”

The Sovereign Network

The machines surrounding them activated.

Screens rose from the floor.

One after another.

Thousands of connections appeared.

Elena recognized governments.

Banks.

Military systems.

Corporations.

Media organizations.

Private intelligence agencies.

The network stretched across the globe.

Alexander spoke quietly.

“This is the world you could command.”

Elena shook her head.

“I don't want it.”

“That's what makes you dangerous.”

He gestured toward the screens.

“Those who desire power are easy to control.”

“And those who don't?”

“They are unpredictable.”

Elena looked at the network.

“Then why show me?”

“Because the world is already changing.”

A red warning appeared.

SOVEREIGN NETWORK: CRITICAL

EXTERNAL BREACH: 7%

Elena frowned.

“What's breaching it?”

Alexander didn't answer.

The percentage increased.

8%.

9%.

10%.

Matthew stared at the screen.

“That's impossible.”

Alexander's expression hardened.

“No.”

He looked toward the darkness.

“It has begun.”

The Enemy Nobody Expected

Adrian noticed the change.

“You're afraid.”

Alexander looked at him.

“Yes.”

That single admission silenced everyone.

Elena stared.

“You said you controlled everything.”

“I never said that.”

“Then what can threaten you?”

Alexander looked at the warning.

“Something that existed before the Sovereign.”

Mara whispered:

“The thing I heard.”

Alexander nodded.

“Yes.”

“The one in the memory.”

“Yes.”

“What is it?”

Alexander looked at Elena.

“Your family called it many names.”

He paused.

“I called it The Hollow.”

The chamber temperature dropped.

The little girl began trembling.

Elena held her tighter.

“What does it want?”

Alexander answered:

“Access.”

“To what?”

“You.”

A New Betrayal

The attackers who had entered earlier suddenly turned their weapons toward Elena.

Adrian reacted instantly.

But before he could move, Victor stepped between them.

“Don't.”

The soldiers hesitated.

Victor looked at Alexander.

“You promised.”

Alexander nodded.

“I did.”

Elena looked at Victor.

“What promise?”

Victor's face tightened.

“I made a deal.”

“With him?”

“Yes.”

“What did you trade?”

Victor looked at the child.

“Her.”

Elena's eyes widened.

“You sold Mara?”

“No.”

Victor shook his head.

“Not Mara.”

His eyes moved to the original child.

“Her.”

The little girl recoiled.

Elena stepped in front of her.

“You're not taking her.”

Victor's voice cracked.

“I never wanted this.”

“Then why did you agree?”

“Because Alexander promised to save someone.”

“Who?”

Victor looked at Elena.

“Adrian.”

Silence.

Adrian's expression changed.

“What?”

Victor swallowed.

“Your father didn't die in the accident.”

Adrian went still.

“What did you say?”

“Richard was taken.”

Adrian stepped forward.

“By whom?”

Victor looked toward Alexander.

“He's alive.”

Adrian stared at him.

“Where?”

Alexander answered.

“Below us.”

Adrian's breathing changed.

“My father is here?”

Alexander smiled.

“Was.”

Adrian froze.

“Was?”

Alexander turned toward the opening in the floor.

“He was the first person the Hollow found.”

The Hollow Arrives

The lights died.

Every screen went black.

The Sovereign Network disappeared.

For three seconds, there was absolute silence.

Then a whisper came from beneath the floor.

Not Alexander.

Not the Covenant.

Not human.

“Found you.”

The child screamed.

Elena felt something cold wrap around her wrist.

She looked down.

Nothing was there.

But fingerprints appeared on her skin.

Five dark marks.

Adrian grabbed her hand.

“Elena!”

The voice whispered again.

“Architect.”

Elena couldn't move.

The marks spread up her arm.

Mara screamed:

“Don't listen to it!”

Elena looked at her.

“What is it doing?”

Mara's eyes filled with terror.

“It's inside your head.”

Elena heard the voice again.

This time directly inside her mind.

“You don't belong to them.”

She tried to fight it.

“You belong to me.”

Elena's knees weakened.

Adrian held her.

“Stay with me.”

The voice laughed.

“He cannot save you.”

Elena squeezed her eyes shut.

“Get out.”

“I have been inside your blood since before you were born.”

Her memories began changing.

Her childhood.

Her mother.

Matthew.

Adrian.

Mara.

Everything distorted.

Then she saw another memory.

A room.

A newborn baby.

Claire holding her.

Alexander standing beside her.

Matthew crying.

And behind them—

a shadow.

The Hollow.

It whispered:

“I chose you first.”

Elena opened her eyes.

The chamber was empty.

Everyone had vanished.

Adrian.

Mara.

Matthew.

Claire.

Even Alexander.

Only the little girl remained.

She stood before Elena.

Tears streamed down her face.

“Elena.”

Elena reached toward her.

“What happened?”

The child shook her head.

“It took them.”

“Who?”

The child pointed toward the darkness.

“The thing beneath us.”

Elena stared into the black corridor.

Then the child whispered:

“And it wants you to come alone.”

A final message appeared on the wall.

ARCHITECT

YOU HAVE 60 MINUTES

COME TO THE ORIGINAL CORE

OR YOUR FAMILY DIES

The countdown began.

59:59

Elena looked at the child.

Then toward the darkness.

Her fear disappeared.

She had spent her entire life being protected.

Being lied to.

Being manipulated.

Not anymore.

She took the child's hand.

“Then we're going together.”

The child looked up.

“But it said alone.”

Elena's eyes hardened.

“I don't care what it said.”

She stepped into the darkness.

And somewhere ahead—

something began laughing.

The laughter came again. Soft. Childlike. Wrong. Elena's entire body went rigid. Adrian immediately raised his weapon. “Stay behind me.” Elena barely heard him. The laughter wasn't coming from the corridor. It was coming from inside the walls. Matthew stared into the darkness. “No…” Claire grabbed his arm. “What is it?” Matthew didn't answer. His face had lost all color. Then the emergency lights returned. A single red bulb flickered above them. The projector was still running. But the image had changed. There was no longer a photograph. There was a video. A little girl sat alone in a white room. She couldn't have been more than six years old. Elena stared. The girl looked familiar. Too familiar. Mara stepped closer. “That's me.” Elena looked at her. Mara shook her head. “No. I remember that room.” On the screen, the little girl slowly turned toward the camera. Her lips moved. The recording played her voice. “Where i
