Chapter 1

Author: Long Nights
Alan took my silence as an invitation to begin divorce negotiations.

"Don't worry about financial compensation. I won't let you leave empty-handed," he said. "I'll give you a car, the house, and half the money from our joint venture. You won't have to work for the rest of your life."

Oh, he planned to push me out of the company we built together.

A lump rose in my throat. I set the agreement aside. "I… I need time to think."

He frowned.

"Selena, please. Unlike you, Sophia hasn't been with anyone but me. That makes me responsible for her life. I'm her only one," he insisted. "Don't make this harder than it needs to be. I'd hate to see you as an enemy over this."

It was a threat.

I remembered our early days, when we had just started the business. A prospective client once tried to strong-arm me into reshaping a deal for his benefit. Alan smashed a beer bottle against the table the moment the man leaned in and lowered his voice.

This time, the figurative bottle was aimed at me.

"Don't worry. I'll sign it," I said. I did not tell him I meant something else. "At least have a meal with me the day after tomorrow, okay? It's our tenth wedding anniversary."

Alan looked startled. Then he sighed. "Why? There's no point."

He thought I was clinging to him.

"Look, I can't. I promised Sophia I'd take her to the OB-GYN for her checkup that day. But if that's what it takes for you to sign, I'll make time."

As if on cue, Sophia Mason called.

"Alan, my tummy feels funny. I think the baby misses their papa…" she cooed.

What baby? It was only two months along, barely formed.

Yet Alan's face softened at once. He spoke to her with open tenderness.

"Oh no, that won't do! I'll have a stern talk with them right away!" he joked.

He was ready to leave. He paused at the door and said, "Truth be told, Selena, she's the home I've always wanted."

He had said that before. He had said it to his family when he cut ties with them for rejecting me. He had grown up in comfort and luxury, yet for me, he had been willing to live in a rundown rented room.

"You're the home I want, Selena."

Now, I was the hell that had trapped him for years.

The soup had gone cold. I threw it, bowl and all, into the trash. Then I made two calls.

First, to my lawyer. I needed to secure my share of the company.

Second, to a moving company. I wanted every trace of Alan removed from the house.

He did not come home that night. Instead, Sophia sent me a photo. Alan stood topless, warming a cup of milk. A smear of lipstick marked his chest.

[Get a grip, darling. Your baby's gone. There's nothing tying you to him now, so how long will you keep simping for a man who doesn't want you? Look at him. He only shows his wild side with me. I'm the only one who can bring out that beast in him.]

[You? You forced a starving man to fast. Tsk. He was so deprived… he took me even after he knew I was pregnant.]

Once, messages like these would have sent me into a frenzy. I would have thrown out every sanitizer and antibacterial spray. I would have shredded his long-sleeved pajamas. I would have screamed at him, demanded to know why he treated me like I carried a disease. I would have asked myself why I chose this torment all those years ago.

I no longer asked. I took a screenshot and turned off my phone.

I knew my worth. Nebula Inc. had recently reached a valuation in the billions under our leadership. Our shared assets alone were worth at least two billion dollars. Among moguls and tycoons, our standing rivaled that of royalty.

I already had money and power.

  • His Death Is Not My Fault   Chapter 10

Alan's death had sent ripples through the city. Some mourned him. Others could not resist flaying a man long dead. With all his shares transferred to me, I became CEO and director of Nebula Inc. Every remaining asset and inheritance sparked intense intrigue.Ida and Ethan may have abandoned the pursuit, but Alan's other relatives had not. They demanded cuts for offshore accounts, real estate ventures, and so-called foundations—a sum that quickly reached astronomical proportions.Their reasoning was laughable. I was apparently not entitled to keep the fortune, regardless of my appetite. It seemed no one could.I offered them no personal response. Instead, I hired top-tier lawyers and won case after case. By year's end, every ounce of Alan's wealth had passed into my hands. The memory chip finally launched after extensive refinement. Unlike Alan's prototype, the new version was streamlined and could last up to 20 years. Users who had recovered from their trauma could even deactivate

As usual, I had my people inform Alan about what had happened to Sophia.According to the nurses, not an inch of his body had remained unscathed. They had removed every sharp object from the room, yet he still managed to cut himself with his own rounded nails."The strangest part is that no matter how much he hurt himself, he never did anything truly lethal. The doctor believes he has lost all will to live, except for whatever he is clinging to. He is waiting for something."I knew what that was: me. That was why I had refused to meet him until now. I did not want him to die so easily. I wanted him to watch as I exposed the hypocrisy of his career, his parents, and even the supposedly pure partner he had once been so proud of.Now it had all come to an end. It was time for him to go.…I thought I had prepared myself. But when I saw him after so long, I still could not suppress a sigh of bewilderment. He was emaciated. His once-glossy hair had become unkempt and patchy. Every vi

Sophia had miscarried.Ida faced charges of assault and battery, and Ethan paid a hefty sum to secure her bail. Then, without even visiting Alan in the hospital, they left the country at once. By then, they had already succeeded in conceiving another child through IVF. This new son would replace Alan. They had once believed they could secure Nebula shares for this child. Now, however, their resentment toward Alan ran so deep that they chose abandonment and disownment over any further effort.Sophia barely had time to grieve her lost child. The college moved quickly to terminate her employment. The tabloid reporter she had hired had published a damaging, scandalous article about her, forcing the college to cut its losses. The supervisor ended up in jail. His wife stormed into Sophia's hospital ward and assaulted her in retaliation.…I submitted all the evidence I had gathered to the court and demanded the return of my rightful share of the funds and assets in our joint account.

Sophia froze. "What did you say?"Ida and her husband, Ethan, stared at me, baffled.I had my assistant bring in Alan's latest physical report. It clearly stated that he had been infertile for about seven years.Sophia slapped the report aside. "That's impossible!" she cried, her eyes dropping to my stomach.Panic flashed across her face, then vanished as she seized on a counterargument. "You've recently been pregnant with his baby too, Selena. Or was that someone else's child you've been passing off as his?""No. I'm nothing like you. It was his." I produced another report. "I used sperm I had frozen and stored seven years ago."It had been his last resort. At the time, he had hated every inch of himself. He had seen his own body as something filthy, something steeped in sin.I had hoped that if he could not step out of the shadow of his trauma for his own sake, he might do it for his child. I had thought it might give him hope again.Over the past seven years, he had caused m

Just as I had predicted, the memory chip became the talk of the city. With Alan's recovery now a success story, countless trauma victims and their families clamored for the chip, hoping it would be their path to salvation.Kier had labored in obscurity for years, yet overnight, his genius drew the recognition it deserved. His research lab was inundated with calls from everyone, including top international medical institutions. Thanks to the incident, I returned to Nebula.Alan had tried to oust me with a supposed scandal—now I returned the favor. He was ordered to take a forced leave. At first, some board members voiced objections. Once they saw the staggering profits the memory chip generated, their complaints vanished.…Three days later, Alan awoke from his coma a changed man. The self-assured, confident director of a billion-dollar empire was gone. All that remained was confusion, anxiety, and self-loathing.Kier explained it might be the effect of two diverging histories fo

  • His Death Is Not My Fault   Chapter 5

No one had expected the footage to be so explicit. Seven people crowded a cramped room, closing in on a single victim. Each reveled in the violation as if it were a game.Their voices were muffled and indistinct, but the cruel laughter cut through with chilling clarity. Worst of all, the victim was Alan.He screamed and dropped to his knees as pain seized him. Green veins bulged across his forehead. The chip in his brain was disintegrating.Sophia rushed to him, panic etched across her face. She grabbed his arms and shouted, "What's happening, Alan? Alan! Don't scare me like this!"She wheeled on his assistant and barked, "What the fuck are you waiting for? Turn it off!"The assistant jolted out of his shock and yanked out the USB drive. He ordered the media team to cut the broadcast, but that was the nature of a livestream. By the time anything appeared on screen, it was already too late.[Fuck me. What have business wars come to in this era? They're making X-rated films now?!]
