Chapter 4

Author: Half-Cooked
None of my classmates knew anything.

In third grade, I had borrowed a comic book from the boy who sat next to me and gotten completely absorbed in it. When Dad found out, he immediately stormed into the school and slapped me hard in front of the whole class.

He even singled out the boy's parents by name in the parents' group chat, warning them: [Keep your son under control. Just because he doesn't care about his future doesn't mean he gets to drag Zephyr down with him!]

After that, I did not have the courage to hang out with my classmates outside class anymore. I was afraid their parents would scold them because of me.

I envied them more than I could say. They got to play basketball together, team up in online games, and share secrets with each other.

Juan was the only exception. I had been naive enough to think he treated me like his best friend, that he was the only person who understood me.

That changed before our first practice exam. The pressure had kept me up all night, and I confided in him. "Juan, I'm so tired. I don't think I can take much more."

The next day, he rushed to my dad with a worried look on his face. "Sir, Zephyr hasn't been himself lately. He admitted to me that he doesn't want to study anymore. He wants to give up. I'm really worried about him."

That night, my dad burst into my room. In a rage, he threw my pillow and blanket onto the floor and made me kneel there and think about what I had done.

"You don't want to study? You've already taken the SAT twice! Tell me, what can you do besides study? What else do you even want to do? Other kids would jump at a chance like this!

"I'm a grown man, and I spend all my time helping you get ready for these exams! You think I'm doing this for myself? I'm doing it so you can make something of yourself!"

-

At five minutes to eight on the night of the livestream, my dad changed into a neat shirt and set up his equipment in the living room. Juan sat beside him as his special guest.

"I'm counting on you to keep things lively tonight, Juan. Getting a word out of Zephyr is like pulling teeth. Thanks for coming to talk with me," Dad said, smiling.

"You don't have to thank me, sir. I'm just happy I can help you and Zephyr." Juan gave him an earnest smile.

I floated above them, sickened by that fake smile.

The livestream started at exactly eight.

"Good evening, everyone! It's David. Welcome to the 'Strict Dad's Road to the Best University' channel!"

Dad smiled at the camera.

"Thanks for all your support, chat! Tonight, we're getting straight to the advice you can use! I'm sharing all my core parenting methods, and I'm not hiding anything!"

Bullet comments instantly rolled across the screen.

[David's finally here! I've been waiting forever!]

[Where's your genius son? Get Zephyr out here to share his study tips!]

[Yes, we want to see the genius himself! Maybe my son can get some of his smartness and help him get into a top college!]

[I'm not even asking for Kingsbridge or Central University. I'd be thanking my lucky stars if my son got into any highly ranked college.]

Dad smiled and waved a hand. "Don't worry. The exams wore Zephyr out a little. He's been sleeping all day. I'll wake him up in a bit and have him talk to you."

Juan chimed in, as if trying to help. "Zephyr's a bit of an introvert and can be a little boring. Unlike me, I can talk to anyone. Sir, why don't you try waking him up again? Everyone has been waiting long enough. I'm sure they've got a lot of questions."

Dad's smile froze for a moment, but he quickly recovered. He was convinced this was another way for me to defy him and make him look bad. "Alright, everyone, give me a minute. I'll drag our little genius out here myself."

He got up, gave the camera an apologetic smile, and headed for my room. Juan grabbed his phone and followed, secretly broadcasting everything live.

"Zephyr! How long are you going to keep this up?" My dad pushed open my door, unaware that Juan was filming. "Get out of bed! Hundreds of thousands of the channel's subscribers are watching! Stop playing dead!"

He went to the bed and reached to pull back my blanket. The instant he touched me, he jerked as if he'd been shocked. "Why... Why are you so cold?"

The color drained from his face. His hand shook as he held it beneath my nose.

One second.

Two seconds.

Three seconds.

No breath.

He let out a terrible, broken scream. "Arghhh!"

Then, the sound of a phone crashed to the floor. The camera swung wildly toward the ceiling, the image became one of chaotic blur.

Only my dad's frantic screams and Juan's terrified voice came through. A few seconds later, the screen went black.

  • His Dream, My Doom   Chapter 9

My mom buried me in a cemetery in the countryside overlooking the sea. She said I had spent my life trapped in my room. I deserved to see the wider world at least in death. There was no photo on my gravestone, just one epitaph. [Zephyr Lane. Born in midsummer, free at last.] Once again, it was Decoration Day. Dad was finally out of prison. He came to my grave with a bouquet of white lilies. He set them down and gently brushed the dust off my gravestone with his rough hands. He stood there in silence for a long time, looking at me. The wind blew in from the sea. "Zephyr. I'm sorry." He could no longer cry. He stared at my name and whispered the same words over and over. "I'm sorry, Zephyr... I was wrong... I was so wrong..." I didn't answer. 'Goodbye forever, Dad. I'll be all right.' My body felt lighter and lighter, as if the wind were lifting me. I took one last look at the world. In the sunlight, a small oak tree beside a park was doing its best to grow. I w

When the SAT results came out, the whole internet was waiting to see my scores. So many people wanted to know how the tragedy would end. My mom had shut herself in her room for three days and nights without coming out. Mr. Martin called the house. "Mrs. Lane, have you checked the results? Zephyr... He..." His voice was thick with tears. He choked up before he could finish. I floated in the room, watching Mom numbly turn on her computer. Her hands shook as she entered my exam registration number and password. Bright numbers appeared on the screen. My total score was 1600 points.Mom stared at the score and started to laugh. Tears rolled down her face as she laughed. Then she slumped over the computer desk and sobbed uncontrollably. "Zephyr, I'm so sorry! It was my fault. If I had insisted you go to college after your first SAT, maybe you would still be alive. I'm useless. I couldn't protect you..." I hovered beside her and tried to hug her. I could only pass through her

The scandal swept across the internet. "Son's Body Discovered During Strict Dad's Livestream" shot to the top of the trending searches. Someone had filmed me being carried out of the exam room at the end of the SAT. The chaotic final moments of the livestream were shared everywhere, haunting students and parents alike. The followers who had worshiped Dad for his parenting now tore him apart. [What the hell! What kind of father does that? He's a monster! A murderer!] [That Juan guy isn't innocent either. He's a manipulative little snake. Someone needs to look into him!] [That poor kid. Even 1440 wasn't enough to keep his dad from making him retake the SAT. If I scored 1280, my dad would be celebrating for three days straight.] [Pushing kids to succeed? More like pushing them into an early grave! That father deserves the death penalty!] [I'm Zephyr's classmate. I can vouch for how terrifying his dad was. We were all too scared to talk to Zephyr.] My dad was released on

  • His Dream, My Doom   Chapter 6

At the station, Juan denied having any part in it. "Mr. Officer, sir! I swear I have nothing to do with this! I’ve always thought there was something wrong with Mr. Lane’s parenting! He took it way too far! "Zephyr told me so many times that he couldn't sleep because of the pressure. He said he couldn't take it anymore. "I even tried talking to Mr. Lane. I told him to stop putting so much pressure on Zephyr, but he wouldn't listen! He even tore up Zephyr's offer letter from a highly ranked college! So many kids dream of going there and can't get in. It's insane!" He made himself out to be an innocent victim and a devoted friend who had been powerless to help. I floated above him and watched his performance coldly. The police also called the invigilators from that day, Mr. Martin, and several classmates to find out what had happened. Every statement pointed to the same thing. Dad had spent years manipulating me and putting me under extreme pressure to succeed. An officer set

The livestream comments exploded after several seconds of silence. [Holy crap! What's going on? What just happened?] [Is this ed? That looked way too real!] [That didn't sound like acting. The terror in his scream was so real that I had goosebumps.] [When the camera swung around, I think I saw Zephyr's face. He was so pale it was scary. There wasn't any color in his face.] [I'm out, guys. This is scaring me. I already called the police.] [He didn't look asleep... He looked like... he was dead.] Sirens soon sounded outside the building. When the police rushed in, my dad was still frantically shaking my lifeless body, trying to wake me. "Get up! Zephyr! Get up right now! Didn't you promise me you'd get into Kingsbridge or Central University? Wake up! You can't keep sleeping!" As the paramedics approached, he spread his arms to shield my cold body. "Get away from him! Nobody touches my son! He's just asleep! He's just exhausted! Don't wake him!" Several paramedics and of
