Moments later, Isla marched past the glass doors of St. Mary’s Hospital.

Her breathing had lost rhythm, while her shoes sounded so loud and uneven against the floor as she hurried toward the reception desk,

On getting there, her voice trembled with great urgency as she blurted with wide eyes,

“Damien Blackwood. He…He was brought in not too long ago… where is he? What’s his condition?”

The nurse at the counter blinked twice in what looked like surprise before leaning toward her computer, but by that time, Isla was no longer listening.

Her eyes had already caught sight of someone, Collins.

He was standing at the far end of the corridor, and for a second, Isla's face grew tight, as if something painful had been forced down her throat.

Collins turned at that same moment, and the recognition in his eyes broke into immediate movement.

“Isla!”

He waved, immediately, and started to rush toward her, apprehension evident in the movement of his legs.

When he reached her, he

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 120: Into the Belly of Chaos

Isla left the station with her mind still very dull and heavy from everything she had seen and heard earlier.By the time she reached home, she was still as restless as she had been before she went to the police station. She proceeded straight into the guest room where Tiara had taken her hacker friend. And on reaching there, she saw the pair bent over a glowing laptop, their voices low and their faces tense. Every now and then, the hacker would point a finger at the screen, while Tiara would lean in closer curiously, as if she could not afford to miss even the smallest detail. As for Isla, she had still not been able to summon the strength to sit on a chair. The initial restlessness was still there, her arms folding tightly across her chest. At last, she took a deep breath and started to move closer to the other two, standing behind them, as her eyes started to focus on the blue light of the screen. She did not say anything. All she did was watch as the quiet, urgent exchange con

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 119: The Invitation

About an hour had passed now since she was brought here, yet Isabella was still sitting on the same chair with her back straight and restless, her fingers digging into her arms as she folded them across her chest. She kept swallowing, eyes darting to the door. After the passage of another five minutes ... When the entrance door finally opened, three men in suits started to walk into the room.Isabella readjusted on her chair nervously. She could immediately tell that they were Detectives.Interrogators.She didn’t need to be told. Their eyes carried the quiet weight of people who already knew too much.Isabella sucked in hot air, slowly narrowing her gaze, defiance replacing the flash of fear that had been occupying her face. After then she braced herself for whatever was coming next. For a moment, silence completely seized the room. The men in black didn’t rush. They stood in their places, watching her as though waiting for her to break under the pressure of their scrutiny. Ev

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 118: The Kidnap

The office of the Manhattan Models agency was so noisy and full of activity this afternoon.Too many phones were ringing at the same time, the uniform voices of the interns were rising and falling from different corners as they made attempts to strike their amateur and rehearsed poses. However…at the very far end of the room, behind a desk full of scattered files, Isabella was sitting with so much more noise in her head than the one in the room. She was supposed to be checking through applications as part of her new role as supervisor, but her mind was far from the papers before her.Her fingers shook each time she tried to reach for a pen, and her eyes kept hanging on the same page. She has been like this since last night. Or rather as far back as their last operation.Ever since she recieved Clarissa’s desperate message urging her to secure supplies after their operation, Isabella’s chest had become so heavy. What made everything even worse, was that she had recieved information

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 117: The Evidence

It was the sharp ringing sound of her phone that woke Isla up the next morning. She stretched on the couch where she had fallen asleep yesteray night. Then she yawned and sat up quickly, leaning forward to pick up the phone from the low table closeby. Her heart gave an instant kick when she saw the name flashing on the screen,It was Tiara.Without hesitation, she tapped the answer button and pressed it to her ear, too eager to recieve the results from the task she had given to the latter yesterday.“Isla,” Tiara’s voice came instantly, “I’ve gone through the dashcam footage. I ran the image. The man’s name is Raymond Colt. Thirty-nine. Former mechanic. Last seen in Brooklyn.”Isla’s eyes slowly started to narrow. Then very gradually, she lowered her voice to respond almost in a whisper,“Forward everything to me, Tiara. Now. Every detail you’ve got.”The call ended after that, leaving silence only behind, except for the faint sound of Isla’s breathing.Moments later the phone starte

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 116: The Fall of Vanessa Hayes

She was panting and shaking so fearfully, and when she looked up again in front of her, what she saw next almost made her eyeballs pop from their sockets. At the doorway… Grandmother Hayes herself was standing with two guards by her side like a portrait in a nightmare. Her face was holding a small, amused smile that spoke of nothing else but the greeting of nemesis. The matriarch took a step forward and began to clap steadily…, the sound of it full of mockery.“Well played,” she said, “I mean…what a class act.”Vanessa’s skin was pouring so much sweat now as the taste of fear almost left her choking. Then the old woman paused and then pointed to a few corners in the room…Starting from the night lamp, towards the wardrobe, and finally the small shelf above the bed. “Just in case you are wondering how we found you.”The matriarch continued in a more clinical yet dreadful tone now, “We have hidden cameras installed in the right places. And that means we have been watching your littl

  • His Enemy, My Husband    Chapter 115: Powdered Malice

The day had initially started off casually until mid-afternoon when Vanessa suddenly marched from her room towards the sitting room, flinging the doors open as if she also had a quarrel with them. Her face as she burst in was a mask of anger and indignation. She stopped in the middle of the room with both hands on her hips. Nate was actually in the room as well, sitting on the arm of one of the sofas with his eyes wide in surprise. Very close to him was his mistress who was now holding her small son close. In the shadows by the arch area, a few servants were also watching with their faces pulled tight.Vanessa stared first at the woman and then the child, with open scorn. Then she turned once more to snap her head toward Nate,“You’re such a disgrace you know that” She spat, loud enough for the watching staff to hear. “Just look at the cheap woman you are trying to replace me with.”She turned back to the mistress, letting the insult settle properly like stone. The woman’s fa
