LOGINEven though Damian shut the penthouse door, the quietness between them seemed like another obstacle that neither of them knew how to remove.
Emily gripped her bag tightly as she remained at the door.
Damian watched her for a brief period of time.
"You came," Damian said.
Emily replied, "You asked me to come."
Damian said, "I wasn't sure you'd show up."
"I also had some reservations," Emily said.
They went into the living room.
Emily recalled the last time she had been in that place.
She had been keeping something hidden.
Damian was now aware of it.
But the secret's weight had increased in some way.
"Do you want a beverage?"Damian asked
Emily replied, "No, thank you."
"Would you like coffee?" Damian extended an offer.
Emily nearly smiled at that.
"You know lately, coffee hasn't been my friend," she said.
Damian said, "I remember."
The quiet came back.
Damian's attention briefly shifted to her before he averted his gaze. And Emily also looked at him quietly.
"You've been thinking about what I said," Damian stated.
"And so have you," Emily said.
"Actually," Damian admitted.
Have you decided? Emily asked.
He looked directly into her eyes.
"I don't believe decisions like these can be made in a single evening," Damian answered.
Emily nodded and said, "I agree."
No one dared to express their actual feelings.
“I am finding it so hard to make a decision,” Damian said as he approached the window.
"When we first met, you were still married," Damian continued.
"I know that," Emily said.
"I keep reminding myself that your marriage has already ended," Damian said.
Emily agreed that it was.
"However, according to the law, you were still married to Ryan," Damian said.
Emily's face tightened.
Emily declared, "You were aware of this when you asked me to your home."
"Yes," Damian stated.
"And you knew what I was going through," Emily continued.
Damian acknowledged, "Yes."
"So what changed? " Emily questioned.
Damian said, "You informed me that you are having my baby. That is what changed."
Emily gave him a long, hard stare.
"That made all the difference," Damian went on.
His voice was gentle.
"I'm attempting to fathom what that means," Damian stated.
Emily took a deep breath as she explained, "It means I am having a baby."
"I'm aware," Damian stated.
Emily insisted, "And I am being truthful with you."
"I understand that," Damian said.
Emily responded, "But you don't trust me."
Damian looked away.
"I believe you, but I am not convinced," Damian said.
"What is it that you're unsure about?" Emily pressed hard.
He remained still.
Emily's eyes were filled with rage as she said, "You're not convinced with the timing."
After some time, Damian nodded.
"Yes," Damian acknowledged.
That word stung deeply.
Emily took a step back.
"You could have just said that," Emily commented.
Damian admitted, "I was afraid you'd leave."
"You're the one who is putting distance between us," Emily said.
Damian admitted, "I see."
"So why? " Emily asked as he approached her.
Damian admitted, "Because I love you."
Emily stopped.
She wondered if she had heard him correctly for a second because he used such a kind voice.
Damian carried on.
"And that's why I'm afraid," Damian said.
Emily spoke more gently.
"Afraid of what?" Emily asked.
"Of believing everything is perfect when it isn't," Damian said.
She averted her sight.
"Perfection has never been a part of my life," Emily commented.
"I understand," Damian stated.
"Ryan tricked me so I decided to leave him. Then I met you. Neither of us anticipated what would come of us," Emily said.
"I understand," Damian said.
Emily admitted, "I never pictured myself having a baby this way."
"Neither do I," Damian said.
Emily stared closely at him and said, "But you still believe Ryan might be the baby's father."
Damian took a moment to think before responding.
The silence spoke volumes. It told her everything she needed to know.
Emily nodded slowly.
"I understand," Emily said.
"No, Emily," Damian said. "It's alright," Emily said.
"It's not," Damian replied.
She grabbed her bag to leave and he reached out for her hand and said, "Don't leave." He held her palm firmly and she told him to let go of her hand.
"Give me a reason to stay," Emily pleaded.
Damian loosened his grasp.
"I need time," he said in a low voice.
Emily freed her hand from his and walked out of the living room. He did not try to stop her. He let her walk out.
Ryan was still in his car which was still parked outside.
He didn't move his gaze from the doorway.
His phone rang at that moment.
It was his lawyer and he answered right away.
Ryan said, "Please tell me you found something."
"I did," said his lawyer.
What is it? Ryan asked.
"Emily's inheritance has a link," his lawyer stated.
Ryan frowned.
"Did you find out where it really went?" asked Ryan.
His attorney replied, "Partly."
"Emily's trust was constantly transferred while Margaret was in command," his attorney said.
Ryan leaned in closer.
"Where did the money go?" Asked Ryan.
His lawyer responded, "We're currently tracking it." "However, it seems that the business that got the funds is linked to one of Victor Knight's companies."
Ryan's expression shifted.
"Give me all the information," Ryan ordered.
His lawyer promised, "I will."
Ryan hung up the phone.
He focused on Damian's penthouse once more.
His only concern was no longer Damian.
A problem related to Emily's legacy was much older.
And if Margaret's assertions were accurate, she had hidden much more than she had said.
He started the engine because he had to find out the truth.
But he had no idea that the answer would quickly put him in front of the person he had been avoiding.
Emily.
Despite surviving too many secrets, Margaret was afraid of opening a mere door. Her hands trembled at the sound of footsteps outside of her study. She inserted the photo into the drawer, secured it, and then the door opened.Behold, it was Ryan. For a while, mother and son gazed at one another in silence.Margaret was the first to regain her composure."You should have knocked, Ryan," Margaret commented."You should have picked up your phone," Ryan said in response."I've been occupied.""What are you busy with?"Margaret raised an eyebrow."Must I explain my daily schedule to my own son?""No. However, perhaps you should explain how a photo of Emily's parents is hidden in your house."Margaret's face went white.just for a second. She smiled after that."Isn't it true that Emily has been asking questions once again?" Margaret inquired."What bothers you about it?""I know how readily old family matters can be misinterpreted."He gave her a thorough examination."Some kind of family m
It seemed as though the air in the room was being pulled in by that image.Emily noticed the unfamiliar man standing beside her parents.Sophia moved nearer."Do you know him?" Sophia asked.Emily shook her head from side to side."No," Emily replied. "I've never seen him before."Ryan kept his gaze fixed on the picture and answered, "I have."Emily turned sharply."Where?" Emily asked.Ryan hesitated."I can't recall his name.""That's not what I asked," Emily said.Ryan stared at her."I met him once when I was younger. At my mom's house."Sophia's expression grew hard."Margaret was acquainted with him?" Sophia asked.Ryan answered, "I believe so.""Do you think so?" Emily asked.Ryan rubbed his forehead.“She never gave any explanation for the people who came and went around my mother.”Emily looked at the picture once more."Why would my parents be involved with this man?"Ryan didn't have an answer.Neither did Sophia. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Emily noticed something."W
Ryan had been avoiding Emily for weeks, but now that he understood he needed to see her, every route appeared to bring him back to her.Emily expected another update regarding the divorce when she arrived at Sophia's office the next afternoon.Upon spotting Ryan at Sophia's desk, she stopped. Her heart felt like it was tightening."What are you doing here?" Emily asked.Ryan stood on his feet and said, "I asked Sophia for a meeting."Emily said, "You should have checked with me first.""I suspected you would say no," Ryan replied."So at last, you know me well enough to say that," she said. For a moment, he looked at her."I heard you still want to go ahead with the divorce," he said."Yes, I will,” she replied."Are you happy?" He asked.Emily nearly laughed."Is that what you came here to ask?" She said "No,” he replied."Then ask what brought you here," she said.Ryan turned his gaze to Sophia."I've found out something regarding your inheritance."Emily's expression shifted."Wha

Damian had been struggling with the urge to ask a single question all night, and by morning, it was all he could think about.Emily stood in front of Sophia's flat, observing as the grey morning enveloped Manhattan. She had barely slept.Damian didn't reject her because of it.Infact, he had not rejected her at all. However, he had made a very clear point by not saying anything. The door was opened by Sophia."You're here ahead of time," remarked Sophia.Emily said, "I couldn't sleep."Sophia gave her face a look."Has Damian called?"Emily said, "Yes.""And?"Emily averted her eyes.He is eager to meet with me this evening.Sophia waited patiently. What Emily was actually asking was understood by her.“Does he trust you?” Sophia asked but Emily replied, "He wants time," instead.Sophia nodded her head slowly."Time has the potential to mean many different things," she said "I know," Emily said."What does it mean to you, then?" Sophia asked.A weak grin was all that Emily could must
After Damian made that call, It was just as if something else had come over him. And all of a sudden, he became moody. He was no longer interested in what the lawyer just told him. He became still. The stillness in the car was more crushing than the pregnancy Emily had just laid between them. With a firm grip on the steering wheel, Damian watched the road intentionally and Emily watched him closely.Emily could already tell what he was attempting to conceal.Damian finally said something."How long have you known you are pregnant?" Damian asked Emily."I have known for a little while now. I have told you this before, why are you bringing it up again?”He didn't say anything again, he just looked through the windshield instead."Tell me what you're thinking, Damian," Emily asked."I'm not sure what I'm thinking about right now," he said as he let out a deep breath.Emily's heart dropped."Is that supposed to make me feel better?"He glanced at her and said, "Emily, I don't want to misl
