Chapter Six

Damian glanced at the message for a long while, with a tense expression.Emily observed it and asked what was wrong, why he seemed so uneasy. He hesitated before responding. Just then, his phone rang again—he answered it. "What's going on?" he asked. It was a man’s voice on the line: “Mr. Knight, the penthouse has been locked down. All cameras are disabled, and security operatives are on their way.” Damian was still worried. “Please make sure you check for any unauthorized entry” he said, and he ended the call. Emily was so frightened. “Wait! Who invaded your house?” “Don't be dramatic, Emily. Someone just breached my security system. They were around while you were there.” A cold sweat rushed through her body. She now recalled the picture that was sent to her. So could have monitored and followed her to Damian's penthouse? “Who did you tell when you were coming to my house last night?” “ Not a single soul.” Emily said almost immediately. “Are you sure?” “What about Ryan and Vanessa”? “How do you expect me to tell the two people who hurt me the most about my whereabouts?” Emely answered. Damian moved a little too close to Emily and said “ This issue is way beyond divorce.” There's someone monitoring you.” Immediately, an intense sound burst from the corridor, and Emily jumped. Damian quickly rushed to her. Then suddenly, the whole ballroom was in disarray. Almost everyone yelled as security operatives ran to the VIP entrance. The light of the ballroom suddenly went out as total darkness filled the ballroom. This left everyone in total confusion. Emily was even more confused than others because she already had a lot in her mind. There was a shattering sound of a glass as someone collided with Emily from behind. She tripped but luckily for her, Damian was able to catch her before she got to the ground. Damian wrapped his arms firmly around her waist and she could almost hear his heart beating steadily. This showed he was not worried about the chaos. “What is going on?” “I don't know’’ And Emily became more worried. The lights came back on before long, but not the usual lights this time. They were danger lights this time. Damian's body guards bypassed the crowd and ran to him, “Sir, we found a transmitter.” Damian became anxious as they showed him the small device. He held out his hands to touch it but one of his guards hesitated to give it to him. “Sir, this is risky for you to touch.” But he insisted and the guard gave him the device. After looking at the device for a minute, he realized it was a tracker. “ “This is not a transmitter”, he said. It is a tracking device. Emily was so startled by what she heard that she nearly had a panic attack and unintentionally spilled the entire contents of her purse. As she crouched to gather her things—lipstick, wallet, phone, and keys—she spotted something odd that had also fallen out. Something she hadn't put there. When Damian saw it, he asked what it was, “I don't know,” she said. His expression became intense as he picked up the object. “This is a tracking device”, he said. “It is obvious that someone had put it in your purse”. She didn't know who to point out because the ballroom is filled with people, surely a lot of people had come close to her that night. Damian received another call from the security team at his penthouse, informing him that they had found someone at his penthouse.“Who?” “he has not yet been identified by security.” “Where is this person right now?” “He got away.” Damian became very angry and let out a loud shout which drew the attention of those standing close to him. Emily almost lost consciousness when she heard that. “How?” “He used another elevator, the service elevator. “ Is it possible that he is the one that took the picture?” Damian answered ”Yes” quickly.

Emily encircled herself with her arms.”This is crazy.”

Damian moved closer.

“Emily.”

She lifted her gaze.

“You’re not leaving here alone tonight.”

“I don’t need someone watching me.”

“That’s not up for discussion.”

“I can handle myself.”

“Can you?”

His tone wasn’t harsh, but firm.

“You were seen entering my penthouse. Someone followed you here. Someone breached my security system.”

He stepped nearer.

“And they know enough about you to exploit your marriage.”

Emily swallowed hard.

“What do they want?”

Damian’s expression grew darker.

“I don’t know.”

A brief silence.

“But I will find out.”

Another voice broke through the clutter before Emily could reply.

“Emily!”

She turned.

Ryan was approaching him.

He had a pale face, his tie hung and his jacket was gone.

He appeared enraged—however, there was more going on beneath the rage..

Fear.

He stopped short when he saw Damian beside her.

“Stay away from my wife.”

Damian didn’t flinch.

“She hasn’t been your wife for a long time.”

Ryan’s jaw clenched.

“That’s not your call.”

Emily stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Both men turned to her.

She took a breath.

“I’m not something either of you can claim.”
