Everything started to fall apart that night she found out Vanessa was sleeping with Ryan. She waited for another message to arrive but it didn't. No picture or warning came in. She thought her phone would ring, but surprisingly; it didn't. Sophia glared at her occasionally as she sat quietly in the passenger seat.
“I don't think they are going to send another message this night,” Sophia said as she drove slowly.
“They probably figured out that we are not going to stop investigating, no matter what they do,” Emily replied.
Emily was tired of investigating. She did not have any more strength to look into any document tonight.
Strangely enough, she felt the urge to vomit.
She touched her stomach.
"Are you all right?" Sophia asked, as she observed. "I believe I am," Emily replied in response to Sophia's question. "Since this morning, my stomach has been bothering me. I did not say anything because we were busy with the investigation."
"Have you had anything to eat?" Sophia asked. "I barely ate anything," Emily replied in response to Sophia's question.
"You've hardly eaten in days," Sophia remarked after glancing at her. "I know," Emily replied. "You should take better care of yourself," Sophia urged her as she headed toward her apartment.
As Sophia drove home, Emily leaned back and closed her eyes at the front seat. When they drove past an upscale restaurant, she felt her stomach grumble because she had smelled fried chicken from the restaurant. “Please pull over at the next turn,” she told Sophia. Sophia stopped instantly. Emily rushed out immediately and leaned to the back of the car. She tried to vomit but nothing came out, so she stood outside and waited for the urge to cease. “What is the matter,” Sophia asked. “I don't know. My stomach is grumbling and it is associated with the urge to vomit. It started when I smelled the food from that restaurant,” she responded. “I think you should see a doctor,” Sophia said as she looked at her. “It is not that serious. I just need some rest. It is probably all the stress I've been through lately that caused it,” she replied. While they still stood outside the car, Emily's phone rang. She answered immediately because it was Damian. After exchanging pleasantries, Damian asked where she was and she told him that she was on her way home in Sophia's car. “I would like us to meet,” Damian said. “When,” Emily asked. “Would tonight be a good time for you?” Damian asked. Emily did not answer immediately. “She wanted to see him so badly but she still had some reservation because she didn't want it to look like she was throwing herself at him. She waited three more seconds and said, “okay but we won't talk about anything that has to do with the investigation.” Damian agreed and said “I will be expecting you,” and ended the call. Immediately, Sophia smiled and said “it is obvious that you like Damian. It is so glaring in the way you were smiling all through the conversation.” “I was not,” Emily responded.
When they got home, Emily had a nice warm bath, threw on something nice and headed straight to Damian's penthouse.
Damian himself answered the door.
After giving her a quick glance, he moved away. "You look tired," Damian said. "I am tired of all the investigation," Emily replied. "Then tonight is about nothing else," Damian said. "I just want everything to go back to normal.
When she got into the living room, she sat quietly and looked around. It wasn't like this the first time she went there. Damian came in and gave her a glass of water.
"Thank you," said Emily.
Damian sat down beside her.
They just stared at each other for a short while.
Slowly, Damian reached for her hand.
"I missed this," Emily said, letting him take it. "What?" Damian asked. "The feeling of safety," Emily replied.
Softly, Damian's thumb moved across her fingers.
"You're safe with me," Damian assured her.
Emily leaned over him.
Suddenly, her stomach grumbled again.
She pulled away and stood up.
"Emily, what's the matter?" Damian immediately stood up as well. "I'm not sure," Emily replied in response to Damian's question. "I just feel sick again."
He went to get her some water.
"No, I don't want water," she said. "Should I call a doctor?" Damian asked. "It's probably just stress," Emily replied.
"Are you certain?" Damian asked after closely examining her. "Yes," Emily replied.
She took a tiny sip of water.
The nausea gradually subsided.
Damian did not bother her about it again. They just sat there and talked about life and the things they liked.
Emily laughed at one of Damian's stories.
Damian made fun of how serious she became when she was determined to make a point.
They were just Damian and Emily for several hours.
Damian led Emily to the door when she finally stood up to leave.
"Will you be here tomorrow?" Damian asked.
"Perhaps," she replied.
"Perhaps? Just give me a real answer," Damian told her.
"You're a billionaire, you are capable of managing uncertainty." Emily said as she went out into the corridor.
Then she suddenly stopped.
Suddenly, she felt lightheaded.
She put one hand against the wall.
Damian immediately grabbed her arm.
"Emily?" Damian called her.
She closed her eyes.
Emily said, "I just need a moment."
Damian appeared worried.
Emily opened her eyes again.
"I'll be fine," she said.
However, one thought crossed her mind as she left.
Why has she been feeling sick so often lately?
Margaret had convinced herself for years that Thomas Reed was no longer in her life until a single phone call shattered that comforting fiction."Where is he?" Margaret questioned firmly. The man on the other end of the line stopped for a moment."We don't know precisely where he is," he said in response. "However, he was seen in Manhattan by someone."Margaret's hands clenched the edge of her desk."After all this time, he chooses to return now?"The man said to her, "He may not have returned for you."Margaret was quiet. She was more terrified by that notion than by anything else.Thomas was the chief of security for her deceased husband. He was also there when Emily's parents began investigating shady financial dealings involving Carter Holdings.Emily's parents then died. After that, Thomas disappeared swiftly.Margaret had never pressed too hard for answers as to why he vanished. She had put too much effort into protecting herself and establishing her position as Emily's guardian
Despite surviving too many secrets, Margaret was afraid of opening a mere door. Her hands trembled at the sound of footsteps outside of her study. She inserted the photo into the drawer, secured it, and then the door opened.Behold, it was Ryan. For a while, mother and son gazed at one another in silence.Margaret was the first to regain her composure."You should have knocked, Ryan," Margaret commented."You should have picked up your phone," Ryan said in response."I've been occupied.""What are you busy with?"Margaret raised an eyebrow."Must I explain my daily schedule to my own son?""No. However, perhaps you should explain how a photo of Emily's parents is hidden in your house."Margaret's face went white.just for a second. She smiled after that."Isn't it true that Emily has been asking questions once again?" Margaret inquired."What bothers you about it?""I know how readily old family matters can be misinterpreted."He gave her a thorough examination."Some kind of family m
It seemed as though the air in the room was being pulled in by that image.Emily noticed the unfamiliar man standing beside her parents.Sophia moved nearer."Do you know him?" Sophia asked.Emily shook her head from side to side."No," Emily replied. "I've never seen him before."Ryan kept his gaze fixed on the picture and answered, "I have."Emily turned sharply."Where?" Emily asked.Ryan hesitated."I can't recall his name.""That's not what I asked," Emily said.Ryan stared at her."I met him once when I was younger. At my mom's house."Sophia's expression grew hard."Margaret was acquainted with him?" Sophia asked.Ryan answered, "I believe so.""Do you think so?" Emily asked.Ryan rubbed his forehead.“She never gave any explanation for the people who came and went around my mother.”Emily looked at the picture once more."Why would my parents be involved with this man?"Ryan didn't have an answer.Neither did Sophia. For a moment, nobody spoke. Then Emily noticed something."W
Ryan had been avoiding Emily for weeks, but now that he understood he needed to see her, every route appeared to bring him back to her.Emily expected another update regarding the divorce when she arrived at Sophia's office the next afternoon.Upon spotting Ryan at Sophia's desk, she stopped. Her heart felt like it was tightening."What are you doing here?" Emily asked.Ryan stood on his feet and said, "I asked Sophia for a meeting."Emily said, "You should have checked with me first.""I suspected you would say no," Ryan replied."So at last, you know me well enough to say that," she said. For a moment, he looked at her."I heard you still want to go ahead with the divorce," he said."Yes, I will,” she replied."Are you happy?" He asked.Emily nearly laughed."Is that what you came here to ask?" She said "No,” he replied."Then ask what brought you here," she said.Ryan turned his gaze to Sophia."I've found out something regarding your inheritance."Emily's expression shifted."Wha
Even though Damian shut the penthouse door, the quietness between them seemed like another obstacle that neither of them knew how to remove.Emily gripped her bag tightly as she remained at the door.Damian watched her for a brief period of time."You came," Damian said.Emily replied, "You asked me to come."Damian said, "I wasn't sure you'd show up.""I also had some reservations," Emily said. They went into the living room.Emily recalled the last time she had been in that place. She had been keeping something hidden.Damian was now aware of it.But the secret's weight had increased in some way."Do you want a beverage?"Damian askedEmily replied, "No, thank you.""Would you like coffee?" Damian extended an offer.Emily nearly smiled at that."You know lately, coffee hasn't been my friend," she said.Damian said, "I remember."The quiet came back.Damian's attention briefly shifted to her before he averted his gaze. And Emily also looked at him quietly."You've been thinking about
Damian had been struggling with the urge to ask a single question all night, and by morning, it was all he could think about.Emily stood in front of Sophia's flat, observing as the grey morning enveloped Manhattan. She had barely slept.Damian didn't reject her because of it.Infact, he had not rejected her at all. However, he had made a very clear point by not saying anything. The door was opened by Sophia."You're here ahead of time," remarked Sophia.Emily said, "I couldn't sleep."Sophia gave her face a look."Has Damian called?"Emily said, "Yes.""And?"Emily averted her eyes.He is eager to meet with me this evening.Sophia waited patiently. What Emily was actually asking was understood by her.“Does he trust you?” Sophia asked but Emily replied, "He wants time," instead.Sophia nodded her head slowly."Time has the potential to mean many different things," she said "I know," Emily said."What does it mean to you, then?" Sophia asked.A weak grin was all that Emily could must
