Chapter Twenty Eight

Chapter 28 complete

The disappearance of the black car made Emily believe that the person that was in that car was monitoring her.

“Do you think they know about everything we talked about in the cafè?” Emily asked as leaned against Sophia's care glaring at the blank area opposite the street.

“I have no idea,” Sophia responded.

Emily thought of Damian's last words one more time and wondered why Damian did not just tell her who it was. And why he cancelled their meeting tonight.

But all that thought was interrupted by Sophia, as she opened the door and said

“Emily, we need to leave this place.”

Emily moved and went inside the car immediately. Just as Sophia drove off, Emily heard her phone ring. She brought it out from her bag and saw that it was Lucas, so she picked it up right away.

“Lucas, what is the matter?” She asked.

“Have you and Sophia driven off?” He asked. “Yes, but we are still close by,” she said.

“When you left, I decided to remain at the cafè for a few minutes just to go through some things I found about Carter Holdings,” Lucas said.

“What did you discover?” Emily replied.

“I think I know who helped Daniel Brooks get access to the building. His name is David Miller, he had access to the parking level during the time the meeting happened,” Lucas replied.

“What else did you find about him?” 

“He works in the finance department, even though I have not linked him with Daniel Brooks yet, but the fact that he had access to the parking level b around that time is suspicious. Plus His employment history revealed that he had worked there for over eight years but when I tried to access his original employment letter, I found out that it is missing.” Lucas explained carefully.

“Is it possible for a company not to have a copy of an employee's employment letter,” Emily asked.

*Who exactly is this David Miller?” Sophia asked.

“That is what I am going to find out,” Lucas replied as he ended the call.

“Do you really believe David Miller and Daniel Brooks have a connection?” Sophia asked Emily as she held the steering tightly.

“I am not sure yet because Lucas said that we should not jump to conclusions yet,” Emily replied. 

Emily was grateful that Lucas reached out the time that he did. He has really helped her so much. She needs more people like Lucas.

As soon as she was about to put her phone in her bag, she heard it ring. It was a text message from Damian Knight.

“Don't reach out to anybody at Carter Holdings concerning David Miller.”

The smile Emily got from the gratitude of Lucas, disappeared instantly. She called him immediately and he answered without hesitation.

“How did you find out about David Miller?”

“Didn't I tell you that I discovered a name connected to Daniel?”

“I mean, how did you discover that Lucas has told me about him?” She asked again.

“I know that Lucas is investigating Carter Holdings, because I am also watching Carter Holdings.” His response was followed by silence.

“If you are watching Carter Holdings, it means you are watching me as well.” Emiliy said as her expression tightened.

“I am not watching you, I cannot do that without your consent.” he replied immediately. Emily didn't know if she believed him.

“Tell me everything you know about David Miller,” she responded. 

“Well, we are not certain if he has anything to do with Victor, but we found his name in some payments linked to Victor.” 

*Was the payment made to him,” Emily asked. “It was not made to him directly by Victor, he is smarter than that. The payments were made through an account that was linked to Victor.” Damian said, as Emily's heart began to pound.

“Do you think David is harmful?” Emily asked.

“We are not sure yet, so I don't want Lucas to go and face him until we confirm.” Damian explained to her.

“What do you think we can do now?” She asked again.

“I think we should lay low and dig some more,” he said.

After he said that, Emily felt some assurance. She kept quiet and didn't say anything some seconds, then she said thank you. Damian told her not to thank him, but she insisted.

They kept quiet for a moment before Damian said something.

“Emily, do not let fear push you to believe in the wrong people. Whatever the case is.” When he said that, he ended the call.

Sophia wanted to know what it was,so she asked Emily what Damian said, and she explained everything to her.

“Lucas needs to know about this,” Sophia replied.

Emily brought out her phone and dialed Lucas. He did not answer, so she called him again and he answered the second time. 

“Are you still at the cafè?” Emily asked. And he said “I left the cafè a while ago,” he replied.

“Damian said it is not a good idea to reach out to David Miller yet,” Emily said.

Lucas became suddenly quiet. He didn't say anything for five seconds. Then he finally said, “I just found out where David Miller lives. So it is too late.” He replied.

“What do you mean it is too late?” Emily asked.

“I am standing outside David Miller's house as we speak,” he replied.

“What have you done now, Lucas?” She yelled.

“I didn't go inside the house, I just came here to see if there is any information I can use. Don't worry about me. I am safe,” Lucas replied.

“I found something Emily,” Lucas added.

“What did you find?” Emily asked.

“When I came here, I saw Daniel Brooks walk out from the front door. I was standing behind my car so he didn't notice.” He explained to her.

“He didn't come out alone. Someone else came out with him.” As soon as Lucas told her that, she told Sophia to stop the car immediately. Sophia was curious to know what had happened.

“Who was with him? " she asked.

“Somebody we all know.”
