Zane’s hand felt way too comfortable on my waist.

Maybe because I hadn’t punched anyone tonight. Or maybe because the soft ballroom music flowing from the grand piano made this whole thing feel like some absurd dream. One where I somehow allowed the most infuriating man I’d ever met to hold me this close.

My feet followed his. Slow. Measured. Our fingers brushed lightly to a rhythm that barely existed. And me, in all my messed-up glory, couldn’t focus on the music. Just on... him.

Damn it.

I tried hard not to look into his eyes. Not to count his breaths. Not to register how his cologne mixed with his aftershave and slowly murdered every logical thought in my head.

My heart was all over the place. Maybe from the wine. Maybe just from my own stupidity.

And I really, really tried not to ask. About her. That woman. The... whoever she was. But the question was already perched on the tip of my tongue, kicking like a toddler throwing a tantrum in the middle of a grocery store.
