Albert staggered back, crashing to the floor.

His fingers trembled as he flipped open the agreement. The contents were brief:

Article 1: Grace invokes the right of unilateral rejection due to the betrayal of her mate, Albert. The dissolution is mandatory and effective immediately.

Article 2: Their son, Leo, has chosen to remain with his mother, Grace.

Below the second article was a line of small, handwritten text in Grace’s script.

“Blessings to you and Maria. Now you can have a real mating cere

That night, Albert got a call from Sophie. He frowned, his first instinct to hang up, but the thought that she was just a cub made him answer.“Daddy… I’m hurt. Can you come be with me?”Her voice was so pathetic that Albert’s heart softened. Whatever her mother had done, Sophie was just a child. But when he pushed open the door to their room, he found Sophie looking perfectly fine, her cheeks rosy.“Daddy, you’re finally here!” she chirped, throwing herself into his arms.Albert’s expression hardened instantly. “I thought you were hurt.”Sophie faltered, then held up her hand, blinking her eyes with feigned innocence. “Just a little. It’s not serious, but it hurts so much…”“Enough.”Albert pushed her away. “I am not your father. Stop wasting my time with these games. My only son is Leo.”Sophie, shocked by his coldness, burst into tears.Maria emerged from the other room, rushing to scoop Sophie into her arms. “Albert, how can you treat her like this? She just wanted your attention!”

“And that’s not all. He favors Maria’s daughter, Sophie. At the ceremony, Leo did nothing wrong, yet he was publicly humiliated and forced to apologize.”“Albert even missed his own son’s birthday to be with Maria and Sophie.”“Do you really think I have any reason to go back?”The old Alpha was silent on the other end for what felt like a full minute. Finally, he let out a long, heavy sigh, his voice tinged with exhaustion.“You’re right. Albert was wrong—terribly wrong,” he said. “But Grace, the pack cannot be without its Luna. I shouldn’t interfere in your personal matters, but for the good of the pack, I have to try to keep things stable for him.”Grace let out a soft, humorless laugh.“Then by all means, you help him,” she said. “But let me be clear. I’ve joined the Ancient Wolfblood Institute, and my project is on the verge of a major breakthrough. I have no more time to waste on a man who isn’t worth it.”With that, Grace hung up.At the same time, Albert received a call from hi

Maria’s words—“She doesn’t love you”—struck the rawest nerve in Albert’s heart. The next second, he slapped her. The sharp crack of it echoed through the cavernous living room.Maria’s head snapped to the side, a bright red handprint already blooming on her cheek. She clutched her face, her eyes wide with disbelief.“Albert! How could you do this to me?”“Have you forgotten what you used to tell me?” she shouted, taking a step forward, as if tearing away the last veil of decency between them.“You said, ‘I’ll take care of you for the rest of my life.’”“You said, ‘I worry about you and Sophie every single day.’”“And you said, ‘Being with you is more relaxing than being with Grace.’”Albert’s face darkened instantly, a storm of fury and guilt in his eyes.“Shut up! You shut your mouth! I never said those things!”“This is all your fault for coming back! You seduced me! You took advantage of me!”“Took advantage?” Maria burst out laughing, bending over as if she couldn’t stand. “It take

Now you can have a real mating ceremony with her.”Albert stared at the words, his vision blackening at the edges. She knew. She knew everything. And he, like a fool, had thought she was just throwing a tantrum. He thought that, like countless times before, she would eventually fall silent and forgive him.The moments he’d deliberately ignored now replayed in his mind with painful clarity. The night he came home drunk, Grace hadn't tended to him gently. She had been cold, distant, sending him to the guest room.At the pack assemb

Albert’s call came while I was at the Southern Pack’s house, helping Leo unwrap his last present.A giant birthday cake sat on the dining table. It was piled high with layers of cream, a small, carved wooden wolf perched on top next to his favorite star-shaped candles.Leo had just made his wish. His eyes were still a little red, but the cake and new toys were already coaxing a smile from him.“Mommy, I made a wish,” he said.I wiped a smudge of cream from the tip of his nose. “What did you wish for?” I asked softly.Leo bit his lip, looking a little shy. After a moment, he said, his voice serious, “I wished for Mommy to be happy and strong forever.”A warmth pricked the back of my eyes. Before I could answer, my phone buzzed on the table.Albert’s name flashed across the screen.I almost scoffed. Seven days. It took him seven days to remember he had a son and a mate? The moment I answered, his voice came through, heavy and laced with its usual accusation. “Grace, why did you miss the

The moment I said, “I agree,” Albert visibly relaxed. After the meeting, I turned to leave. He caught me in the hall, wrapping his arms around me from behind. In the past, I would have melted into his embrace, felt a bittersweet ache for this rare display of affection, and found another excuse to forgive him.But now, I just felt suffocated.“Grace,” he murmured. “Don’t be angry.”I didn’t pull away. I just stood there, perfectly still.Albert seemed to take my silence as surrender. His voice grew softer. “Letting Maria help with the festival is just to help her cope with losing her mate. You know she's been going through a hard time. When you get back from your trip, everything will go back to normal.”He said it like it was the most reasonable thing in the world. He paused, then added, as if I needed more convincing, “Think of it as training, so she can assist you better in the future.”Back to normal? He had no idea. I wasn’t coming back.I was done arguing. “Okay,” I said quietly.
