I shot my head up quickly, fixing my gaze on Elena whose eyes were already fixated on me. Her hand was still holding mine as if she was trying to stop me from slipping further into more panic.

“Carol,” She called out my name firmly, “you’re not the kind of woman who cowers in the face of threats.....That’s just not who you are.”

I looked away immediately, pretending to focus on the curtains swaying slightly from the fan’s breeze.

The hum of the blades filled the room, blowing strands of my hair across my face which I pushed back half-heartedly, unwilling to meet her gaze anymore.

“You remember where we came from, don’t you? You weren’t always Antonio’s wife, living in mansions with maids and drivers. You and I...we started at the bottom.” She gestured to buttress her point.

I stayed quiet and listened to the weight of her words as memories I often tried to bury started scratching their way back to my mind again.

“You were fire, Carol. Back in the strip club, when everyone else was t

If what she said was true, that someone had been killed and that I was being watched, then it is worthy of being taken into consideration.I felt a sudden urge to leave the store, to run out into the open air but I forced myself to stay calm, moving slowly and stylishly scanning the faces around me one last time but nothing looked out of place, yet everything felt wrong. I tightened my grip on my bag and walked to the exit, my steps steady but my mind buzzing. Outside, the parking lot stretched ahead, bright under the evening sky. People moved in and out of cars, pushing trolleys, talking on their phones and it all looked normal.I reached my car and unlocked it quickly, slipping inside and locking the doors without turning the engine on. I sat there gripping the steering wheel and staring at the folded paper in my bag. I was getting very curious to know what it was she wanted to relay to me, especially how the death of whomever she had mentioned earlier had a thing to do with me.

I quickly left the body soaps and scrubs stand and reverted to the face cream stand. I hadn’t seen the brand that I loved so I burrowed through picking out a new face cream every other second and reading their descriptions.Suddenly, I saw Anna standing a few feet away. At first, I thought she was the lady that stood beside me and muttered something just a couple of minutes ago but then I noticed how she moved. She was still dressed in black but her body was tense, her shoulders slightly hunched, like she wanted to make herself invisible. Every few seconds she turned her head sharply to look behind her, her hair swinging across her cheek. Her eyes flicked from one end of the aisle to the other, then up to the big convex mirror fixed in the corner of the store where it reflected everything including the shelves, the shoppers, and us but Anna stared at it like it held some hidden threat behind it.She had the same black glasses the other lady had but hers hid her eyes more. I could s

“I know I have seen it every other day on you back in the days but now, I do have a hunch about that tattoo on your skin especially as the pamphlet has the same symbol on it,” Elena said, chewing slightly on her lower lips.I broke her grip on me and waved my hand dismissively, shaking my head like she was unbelievable. “Elena, come on! A tattoo is a tattoo, anyone could have drawn the same thing and it doesn’t mean anything.” I protested but she didn’t look convinced. She kept flipping through the pamphlet, running her finger over the strange symbol printed on one of the pages. “Carol, you don’t get it…. This wasn’t just a random design. There was a gang, back in the day, people said they used this mark and it stood for something between them,” She explained.I sighed and leaned back, adjusting my blouse as if I was trying to wave the whole conversation off. “And I’m telling you I don’t belong to a gang, I never did and you know it, so, don’t make this a big deal because it isn’t,

“Why aren’t you picking that?” Elena asked, drawing closer to where I was.“I will pick it up later,” I replied blatantly.“What if…?”“Later, not now,” I frowned, lifting a finger to show my seriousness.“You know, that day back at the club, when you put him in his place, it didn’t just shock the others. It changed me too. I got closer to you after that because you gave me the courage to stop hiding behind fear,” Elena continued, playing with her fingers like a shy school girl who didn’t want her friends to laugh at her.I smiled, “You have never told me this, Elena,”She smirked, tilting her head. “Look at you, finally waking up. I was starting to think Antonio sucked all the boldness out of you.” I rolled my eyes but smiled faintly. “You’ll never change, will you?” “Not when it comes to you,” She teased, nudging my arm.I pushed myself up from the couch, ready to leave, when the fan above whirred louder and sent a gust of air down at me. My peplum blouse fluttered up slightly, an

Veronica gave out a very chilly and mocking laughter that sounded through the phone so loudly it almost pierced my ear. It was the kind of laughter that mocked without mocking. She laughed as though I was an object of ridicule.“I can’t believe you really panicked,” She said between the breaths of her laughter. “The way you rushed off, thinking I was at the city mall waiting for you...Oooppps! it’s priceless.” She jeered again.I gripped the phone tighter, my nails almost digging into my palm as my chest boiled.“Veronica, do you think this is funny? First, you block my way throwing accusations at me and now you’re mocking me? You have no idea what you’re doing.” I shot at her angrily.“Oh, I know exactly what I’m doing,” She shot back, her voice dripping with satisfaction. “Honestly, I can bet that you looked terrified. I wish I could’ve seen your face in person.”I gritted my teeth as my anger pushed through my words before I could stop it.“You’ve crossed the line, Veronica. You b
