Chapter 36

Elena’s POV

I didn’t stop until the door of my suite was shut behind me.

My back pressed against the wood. My heart was still racing so hard I could feel it in my throat. I lifted one hand to my lips.

They still tingled from the kiss. The same kiss I had dreamed about for years and never truly expected to receive like that honest, unguarded, and completely real.

He had feelings for me.

Damien Kane had stood in the living room and told me he was tired of fighting what he felt.

  • THE WIFE HE NEVER EXPECTED    Settling In

Chapter 114Elena’s POVMorning in the new house felt almost normal.I woke before Damien’s alarm and listened to the quiet. No tight feeling in my chest. No sudden urge to check the doorway. Just soft light on unfamiliar walls and the low sound of the city far below. When I finally got up, I found him in the kitchen making tea.“You’re up early,” he said.“So are you.” “I wanted to reset the security panel before work calls start.”I sat at the counter and rested one hand over the clearer curve of my stomach. “Some things never change.”He glanced at me, and for a second the old rhythm was there. Easy. Familiar. Then he set the cup in front of me and leaned against the counter, less playful than before.“I missed this,” he said.“Tea?”“You sitting here like this.”The words were casual, but he did not leave them shallow. He looked at me properly and added, “I also know I hurt you. We can’t just slide back into the old version of us and call it repaired. For a while, we’re going to

  • THE WIFE HE NEVER EXPECTED    After the Guests

Chapter 113Elena’s POVThe party did not end all at once.It thinned.First my father went outside to take a call. Maria packed leftover food into containers with the kind of efficiency that meant the evening was turning toward goodbye. The music dropped so low it almost disappeared. One by one, the loud edges of celebration softened into private conversations and half-finished hugs.I remained on the sofa with my hands around a warm cup, watching the house shift from crowded to calm.Damien looked over at me from across the room. I gave a small nod. I was tired, but I was not drowning.Damien’s POVI could see the exhaustion settling under Elena’s eyes. Not regret. Not panic. Just the weight of an emotional night.I kept the farewells orderly and short. No speeches. No dragging the evening past her limit. When Mr Voss shook my hand, his grip was firm.“Take care of my daughter.” he said.“I will.”Sophia hugged Elena longer than necessary and whispered something that made her smile

  • THE WIFE HE NEVER EXPECTED    The Welcome Party

Chapter 112Elena’s POVThe house did not settle after the surprise. It opened. Voices filled the living room in overlapping layers of warmth and curiosity. Plates moved from Maria’s hands to the table. My sister inspected every corner like she was scoring the furniture. Lila kept close enough to catch me if my emotions tipped too far in either direction. My parents sat where they could watch both me. Damien’s mother remained in the armchair with a quiet dignity that still carried old complexity. Marcus stood near the window, present without needing attention.I sat on the sofa with a plate I had not asked for and tried to keep up with the love coming at me from every side.Damien’s POVI stayed near for Elena to see me, not to cage her. That balance mattered tonight. She had walked into this house by choice, not force, and I was not going to turn the celebration into another form of pressure. When Maria looked to me for direction, I told her to follow Elena’s pace. When the music edg

  • THE WIFE HE NEVER EXPECTED    Arrival

Chapter 111Elena’s POVI did not come back because the pain disappeared.I came back because the pain had finally changed shape. For weeks after I left the old penthouse, I lived inside one image. A doorway. A bed. A woman. Damien in a towel. Her mouth on his. That second had followed me into sleep, into silence, into every conversation where people expected me to be stronger than I felt. Even when the security reports supported him, even when the facts said he did not invite her, my body still remembered the scene before my mind could defend him.Forgiveness did not arrive as a soft decision. It arrived slowly, through days when the anger burned less hot and the fear became less constant. At Lila’s house, I learned the difference between refusing to be humiliated and refusing to heal. One protected me. The other threatened to trap me. I read the reports more than once. I listened to Marcus. I listened to my mother. I listened to myself when the night was quiet and there was no one l

  • THE WIFE HE NEVER EXPECTED    Distance with Hope

Chapter 110Elena’s POVThe days at Lila’s began to change shape. Not into healing exactly. Into something quieter than constant panic. I still woke up tired. I still flinched when memory came too fast. But the sharp edge of every hour had softened enough for me to breathe between the waves.Damien did not show up uninvited. He did not crowd my phone with speeches. He sent practical updates and waited for replies I sometimes delayed on purpose.Monday morning, his message was short:Viewed another place. Not right. Still looking with your conditions in mind.I read it twice before answering:Okay.Only that. But I answered.Damien’s POVA reply from Elena, even one word, changed the temperature of the day.I stood in the empty shell of the chosen penthouse while contractors measured security points and paint samples lined the kitchen counter. Marcus handled the technical side. I handled the part that could not be measured: whether this place could feel like her without pressuring her

  • THE WIFE HE NEVER EXPECTED    House Hunting in Secret.

Chapter 109Damien’s POVI did not tell Elena I was viewing properties that morning. She had asked for no pressure, and showing her half-ready apartments would only turn a fragile opening into noise. So I went alone with Marcus, dressed down, no assistant trail, no public attention. This was not a business acquisition on display. This was a search for a place my wife might one day breathe in without flinching.Marcus drove. “What exactly are we looking for?”“Light,” I said. “Real security. Soft rooms. Nothing that looks like the old penthouse.”“And nothing that looks like guilt with expensive furniture.”I glanced at him. “That too.”Marcus’s POVThe first building was wrong before we finished the lobby.Too glossy. Too interested in being photographed. The kind of place where people bought windows for status and called it home. Damien walked through two units without removing his hands from his pockets.“No,” he said.“You didn’t even see the main bedroom.”“I saw enough.
