Chapter 1: The First Move

Nyra's Pov

I did not believe in accidents.

That was the first thing I reminded myself as I stood behind the glass, watching the game unfold in front of me. The rink was loud, filled with people shouting, clapping, and calling out names, but none of that mattered to me. I was not there for the team, and I was not there for the game. I was there for one person.

Jace Ryder.

I had heard his name long before I ever saw him play. People talked about him like he was already something bigger than this place, like it was only a matter of time before he left and never looked back. When I finally saw him on the ice, I understood why.

He did not play like the others.

There was something controlled about him, even in the middle of chaos. He did not rush his movements, and he did not panic under pressure. Every pass, every turn, every decision looked intentional, like he already knew how everything would play out before it happened.

That kind of confidence was rare.

That kind of confidence could also be broken.

I kept my eyes on him as the game continued. His teammates moved around him, some trying to keep up, others relying on him to carry them through. I noticed the way they looked at him, the way they waited for him to take control when things started slipping. He was not just part of the team. He was the reason they were still in the game.

It made things easier for me.

I shifted my attention briefly to the people around me. The stands were full, not just with students, but with adults who did not look like they belonged there. Some of them were quiet, watching carefully instead of reacting like the others. I recognized that kind of attention. They were not here for entertainment.

They were here to choose.

That was how this worked. One player stood out, and the rest were forgotten.

My gaze moved back to the ice, and this time I looked at someone else.

Dylan Cruz.

He was good. Anyone who understood the game could see that. His movements were sharp, and he was paying attention to everything happening around him, but there was something different about the way he played. It was not confidence. It felt like he was trying to prove something every second he was on the ice.

That kind of energy did not come from nothing.

I watched him for a moment longer, then shifted back to Jace. There was no comparison. Jace did not chase the game. The game followed him.

That was why this was going to be a problem.

I already knew how this would end. If nothing changed, Jace would be the one they picked. He would leave, move forward, and everything would fall into place for him the way it always had.

I could not allow that to happen.

Not because I hated him, and not because I wanted to destroy him, but because he was exactly what I needed. The kind of attention he carried, the kind of influence he would have once he moved forward, it was something I could not replace with anyone else.

I needed him at the right time.

Not now.

The noise in the rink grew louder as the game reached its final minutes. The tension spread through the crowd, and people began to stand, watching more closely as the score remained tied. I stayed where I was, calm, patient, and focused.

Jace moved across the ice with the puck, and I followed him with my eyes. Two players tried to block him, but he moved past them without hesitation. It looked effortless, like he had done it a hundred times before.

He took the shot.

The puck hit the back of the net, and the entire place erupted.

People screamed, jumped, and pushed into each other in excitement, but I did not react. I simply watched him.

His teammates rushed toward him, grabbing onto him, shouting his name, celebrating like the game had already been won. He smiled, and for a moment, he looked exactly like what everyone believed he was.

Untouchable.

I let out a quiet breath and turned away from the glass.

The decision had been made, not by the scouts but by me.

As I walked out of the rink, I reached into my pocket and pulled out my phone. I stared at the screen for a few seconds before dialing a number I had already saved.

It rang once before the call connected.

“Are you sure?” the man on the other end asked.

I did not hesitate.

“Yes,” I said calmly. “It has to happen before the final match.”

There was a short pause on the line, like he was thinking about it, weighing the risk.

“And the target?” he asked.

I stopped walking for a moment, my grip tightening slightly around the phone.

“Jace Ryder,” I replied.

Another pause followed, longer this time.

Then he spoke again.

“It will be done.”

The call ended, and I lowered the phone slowly.

For a few seconds, I stood there in silence, listening to the distant noise of the crowd still celebrating behind me. Then I slipped the phone back into my pocket and continued walking like nothing had changed.

Because to me, nothing had, this was just the beginning, and every game needed a first move.

As I stepped outside, the cold air hit my face, but it did nothing to change the way I felt. I had already thought this through more times than I could count, and there was no part of me that wanted to go back on it.

People like Jace did not stop unless something forced them to, and I was about to be that force. I knew what this would cost him, and I knew what it could turn him into later. That was the risk I was willing to take.

Chapter 50: Showing UpJace's Pov I tried to focus for the rest of practice, but it did not last.No matter how many drills I ran or how hard I pushed, my mind kept drifting back to the same thing. The way Nyra sounded on the phone did not sit right with me, and the more I thought about it, the more it bothered me.By the time practice ended, I had already made up my mind.I was not going to sit around waiting for her to pretend everything was fine.“Where are you going?” Mason asked as I grabbed my stuff.“Out,” I replied. He looked at me for a second, then smirked.“Yeah, I know what kind of out that is,” he said. “Try not to mess it up.”“I’m not going to mess anything up,” I said.“You say that now,” he replied.I shook my head and walked off before he could keep going. The drive to her place felt longer than usual, not because of traffic, but because I kept thinking about what I was going to say. I did not have a plan, and I did not like that. I usually knew how to handle things

Chapter 49: Something Off Jace's Pov I did not sleep well that night, and it had nothing to do with training or physical exhaustion. My body was tired, but my mind refused to shut down, and every time I closed my eyes, I kept replaying the same moments from the night before. I tried to ignore it, turning over in bed and telling myself it was not a big deal, but that did not change anything. Nyra’s voice stayed in my head, especially the way she said she was fine when it was obvious she was not.By the time morning came, I gave up on trying to get more rest and got out of bed. I moved through my routine without thinking too much about it, threw on my clothes, and headed straight to the rink. I figured if I kept myself busy, I would not have to deal with everything sitting in the back of my mind. The cold air hit me as soon as I stepped onto the ice, and for a moment, it felt like exactly what I needed. I pushed forward, picking up speed quickly, letting the movement take over. I foc

Chapter 48: The Night That Wouldn’t End Nyra's Pov The drive home felt longer than usual, even though I took the same route I always did. My hands stayed steady on the steering wheel, and my eyes stayed on the road, but my mind refused to settle. Every few seconds, it drifted back to the same moment outside the party, replaying it in a way that made it impossible to ignore.I could still see the way he had looked at me, the way the space between us had disappeared without either of us saying it out loud. I could still feel the pause right before everything almost crossed a line we would not be able to undo.I tightened my grip on the wheel slightly and forced my focus back to the road.“That was nothing,” I said quietly to myself. It should have been nothing. It was supposed to be controlled, like everything else I handled. I had stepped in, fixed the situation, and made sure there was no room for confusion. That was how I always operated. But this did not feel like that.By the tim

Chapter 47: After the Party Jace's Pov By the time we stepped outside, the noise from the party faded just enough for everything else to feel louder. The air was cooler, and it hit differently after being inside for so long. I ran a hand through my hair and exhaled slowly, trying to shake off the weight that had been building all night, but it didn’t go anywhere.Nyra stood a few steps away from me, her arms loosely crossed as she looked out toward the street. The lights from inside still spilled through the windows behind us, but out here, everything felt quieter, more real.“You always leave early?” she asked.“Not always,” I replied. “Just when it starts getting too much.”She nodded slightly, like she understood that without needing me to explain it further.“It wasn’t what I expected,” she said.“In a bad way?” I asked.“No,” she replied. “Just… different.”I leaned against the side of the car, watching her for a second.“You handled it well,” I said.“I told you I would,” she

Chapter 46: Public Claim Nyra's Pov The moment Aria walked away, the noise of the party rushed back in, but it didn’t feel the same as before. It wasn’t just the music or the crowd. It was the attention. Even though people had turned back to their conversations, I could still feel it lingering in small ways. A few glances lasted longer than they should have, and I knew exactly what that meant. They had seen enough to start forming their own versions of what just happened.I looked at Jace briefly and noticed the tension still sitting in his expression. He looked irritated, but not surprised, which told me that this wasn’t new for him. That made it worse in a different way.“That happens a lot?” I asked.“More than it should,” he replied.I nodded once and let my eyes move across the room again, taking in the way the energy had shifted. The situation wasn’t over just because Aria walked away. It had already turned into something else, and if I didn’t control it now, it would spiral i

Chapter 45: Aria Returns Jace's Pov I should have known the night wouldn’t stay calm for long.Things had settled into something easy after a while. Nyra stayed close, not in a way that felt forced, but in a way that made everything around us feel a little more grounded. We talked, moved through the crowd, and for once, I wasn’t thinking about anything outside that moment. That should have been a warning.“Jace.”I didn’t need to turn to know who it was.Nyra felt it too. I could tell by the way her posture shifted slightly beside me, like something in the air changed before the situation even fully revealed itself.I turned anyway.Aria stood a few steps away, her arms crossed, her expression already set in that familiar way that meant she wasn’t here to be casual about anything. She looked exactly the same, confident, sharp, and already ready to start something.“Didn’t expect to see you here,” I said.“That’s funny,” she replied. “I could say the same thing.”Her eyes moved to Ny
