Chapter 1: The Woman He Chose to Lose

The rain had been falling for hours, drumming relentlessly against the floor-to-ceiling windows of Blackwood Manor. Lightning flashed across the night sky, briefly illuminating the grand estate that had once felt like home to Aurora Bennett. Tonight, it looked more like a prison.

Aurora stood in the marble hallway, her fingers trembling as she clutched the divorce papers pressed against her chest. The white dress she wore was no longer the symbol of a hopeful future. Rainwater soaked the hem, and tears blurred her vision until she could barely read the words on the page.

Three years.

Three years of loving Damian Blackwood with everything she had.

Three years of believing that behind the cold, powerful billionaire was a man capable of love.

She had been wrong.

Taking a shaky breath, she pushed open the heavy oak doors leading into Damian's private office.

The room was silent except for the soft scratching of a fountain pen across paper.

Damian didn't look up.

Dressed in a perfectly tailored charcoal suit, he sat behind an enormous mahogany desk, reviewing documents worth millions as though nothing unusual had happened. His sharp jaw, neatly combed black hair, and unreadable gray eyes made him look every bit the ruthless CEO the business world feared.

Aurora forced a smile, hoping—praying—that there had been some terrible misunderstanding.

"Damian..."

Her voice barely rose above a whisper.

He finally lifted his eyes.

For a brief second, she searched for the warmth she used to see whenever he looked at her.

Instead, she found only indifference.

"The papers are on the desk," he said calmly. "Sign them."

His words struck harder than the thunder outside.

Aurora stared at him in disbelief.

"You called me here... just for this?"

"I don't like repeating myself."

Her throat tightened.

"There has to be a reason," she pleaded. "Tell me what I did wrong."

Damian remained silent.

The silence hurt even more than anger would have.

She walked closer until she stood in front of the desk.

"I stood by you when your company nearly collapsed."

"I stayed awake every night while you worked."

"I defended you when everyone called you heartless."

"So why?"

"Why are you throwing us away?"

Damian leaned back in his chair, his expression never changing.

"Our marriage was a mistake."

The words shattered something inside her.

"No..."

She shook her head desperately.

"You don't mean that."

Before Damian could answer, the office door opened.

The sharp click of high heels echoed through the room.

Aurora turned.

Vanessa Sterling.

Elegant.

Beautiful.

Confident.

She walked straight to Damian and slipped her arm around his without hesitation.

The intimacy of the gesture felt like a knife twisting inside Aurora's chest.

Vanessa smiled sweetly.

"I'm sorry," she said, though there wasn't an ounce of remorse in her voice. "Were we interrupting?"

Aurora's gaze shifted between them.

Confusion slowly turned into horror.

"Damian..."

He didn't move away from Vanessa.

He didn't deny anything.

Aurora felt her knees weaken.

"Is this why?" she whispered.

Vanessa laughed softly.

"I think she's smarter than we gave her credit for."

Aurora looked at the man she loved.

"Please..."

"Tell me this isn't true."

For the first time that evening, Damian stood.

He walked around the desk until only a few feet separated them.

His face remained unreadable.

"I've made my decision."

"Sign the papers."

Every dream Aurora had built came crashing down.

Her hands shook so violently she almost dropped the pen.

She wanted to scream.

To cry.

To ask him to remember their promises.

Instead, she looked into his eyes one final time.

"I loved you," she whispered.

"I never lied to you."

"I never betrayed you."

"If you're doing this because someone convinced you otherwise..."

She paused, tears rolling freely down her cheeks.

"...one day you'll discover the truth."

"And when you do..."

"...it will already be too late."

The room fell silent.

Damian's jaw tightened for the briefest moment, but the expression disappeared so quickly Aurora wondered if she'd imagined it.

Without another word, she signed the papers.

Her signature looked distorted beneath the falling tears.

She gently placed the pen on the desk.

Vanessa smiled in triumph.

Aurora turned toward the door.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

She didn't look back.

She couldn't.

The moment she crossed the threshold, the woman who had entered Blackwood Manor as Damian's wife disappeared forever.

Outside, the rain embraced her like an old friend.

She walked into the darkness alone.

Behind the office window, Damian watched her figure disappear through the storm.

For reasons he couldn't explain, his chest felt strangely heavy.

Vanessa slipped her hand into his.

"It's over," she said softly.

He nodded.

"Yes."

But neither of them noticed the small brown envelope lying unopened beneath the stack of divorce papers.

Inside it was a medical report that would reveal a truth capable of destroying everything Damian believed.
