Chapter 4

Author: Half Book
The night John posted that statement, the group chat blew up with people telling me not to throw a fit.

[Pregnant women are always moody. Clara was wronged, and John was just being responsible.]

I didn't reply to a single message.

---

At three in the morning, a sudden sharp pain in my abdomen jolted me awake.

The bedsheets were soaked. I reached down and pulled away a hand covered in blood.

John finally picked up on my third call, his voice hushed. "Sharon, don't throw a tantrum right now. I really can't leave."

I curled into a ball, trembling from the agonizing cramps.

"I'm bleeding, John. A lot of blood. Please come to the hospital. Please?"

Silence hung on the line for a brief second.

Then Clara’s hysterical sobbing cut through. "John, I don't want to live anymore..."

John's footsteps came to a sudden halt.

"Call a nurse first," he said to me. "Dr. Gates will send someone right away.

"Clara has locked herself in the bathroom," he continued hastily. "She has a blade."

I grit my teeth, gasping through the pain. "John, this is your child!"

The line fell dead quiet for two seconds.

"A child... we can always have another one later," he finally said. "But if something happens to Clara right now, that's a human life!"

---

After the call disconnected, I sent him a single voice note. “John, it hurts so much.”

The status marked it as ‘Played.’

Ten minutes passed. He never replied.

A nurse rushed inside. "Where is your family?"

I stared blankly at the ceiling. "I don't have anyone."

Dr. Gates kept asking me how severe the pain was, how long I had been bleeding, and whether my family was present.

I only answered the last question, "I don't have any family."

In the end, Dr. Gates pulled down her mask and shook her head with a heavy sigh.

"Miss James, you're still young. You'll have other children in the future."

She gave me a sympathetic look.

"The miscarriage was incomplete. We need to perform a procedure to clear the tissue immediately."

I had thought that if this baby survived, maybe I could convince myself to go through with the wedding.

Now, even my final reason to stay was gone.

At noon, John finally showed up.

There was a small Band-Aid stuck to the back of his hand.

That "human life" of Clara's had ultimately translated to nothing more than a tiny Band-Aid on his knuckle.

He walked to the bedside. "What did Dr. Gates say?"

I stared out the window. "The baby is gone."

John froze, completely stiff.

Yet his very first response was, "Why didn't you call me again?"

"I did call," I said softly. "You didn't come."

John's eyes turned bloodshot. "I thought you could hold out!"

I nodded. "Yeah. I held out. But the baby didn't."

He reached out to touch me, but I pulled away instantly.

"I told you there was a lot of blood. I told you I might lose the baby." I looked at him, my voice completely devoid of warmth. "You just assumed I could keep waiting."

John's voice went raspy. "Clara wasn't fake-acting last night. She really had a wound on her wrist."

"Was it deep?"

He tensed up.

I looked down at the tiny Band-Aid on his hand.

"That's all you have on your hand. What about her? How deep was her wound?"

John remained completely silent.

"We can have another child in the future," he whispered after a long pause.

I looked right into his eyes. "We don't have a future."

John's face paled instantly. "Sharon, stop talking out of anger right now! The wedding cannot be canceled."

I opened my eyes and looked at him. "John... even now, do you really think I'm still going to marry you?"

The nurse walked in to change my IV. "The patient just came out of surgery and needs rest. Family members, please step outside."

Family.

That word made me feel sick to my stomach.

After the door closed, I borrowed a phone to call my best friend, Sarah Davis.

"Sarah, I want to leave this place."

She paused for three seconds. "Wait for me."

Right after hanging up, I canceled the wedding arrangements, contacted a lawyer to dissolve our engagement, and forfeited all claims to the shared apartment and John's money.

When the nurse returned my phone, I opened our shared health application first.

Disable Data Sharing.

Delete Emergency Contact.

Unpair Couples' Watch.

System prompts popped up one after another.

[Health data sharing with John has been disabled.]

[Emergency contact removed: John.]

[Couples' smartwatch unpaired successfully.]

I double-checked every setting.

No notifications would pop up on his end.

Unless he checked the settings himself, he would see nothing.

---

Toward the evening, John went out to buy some porridge.

Before leaving, he murmured softly, "Wait for me to come back."

I gave no response.

During my evening checkup, my blood pressure and bleeding finally stabilized.

After reviewing the lab results, Dr. Gates agreed to approve my transfer to another hospital.

Shortly after John left, Sarah walked in carrying the transfer approval form.

Dr. Gates gave her a strict warning, "She can be transferred, but don't let her walk on her own feet. Monitor her bleeding constantly once you get to the new clinic, and take her to the ER immediately if anything happens."

Sarah nodded solemnly. "The car and the private nurse are waiting downstairs."

I packed my diagnosis papers, the pre-wedding health forms, and the unpaired smartwatch into a brown envelope.

On the cover, I wrote a single line.

[John, my heart and my future, are no longer yours to control.]

I pressed the envelope right under the water glass on the nightstand.

Leaning against the wall for support, I dragged myself to the door. My legs felt so weak I could barely stand.

A nurse pushed a wheelchair up to me. "Miss James, the transfer ambulance is downstairs."

---

Miles away, an inexplicable sense of dread suddenly seized John's chest.

He sent me several text messages, but none went through.

When he finally rushed back into the quiet hospital room, his footsteps came to a dead stop.

The following spring, I returned to the city to speak at a healthcare summit. The core theme was emergency escort services and post-op support for women.Doctors, charitable organization directors, and press members filled the auditorium.Standing on stage, I clicked to the final slide of my presentation. My name wasn't written on the screen. There was only a single sentence.[Never make a person in agonizing pain answer the question: "Where is your family?"]---I addressed the audience calmly. "Many women do not suffer from mild conditions."Their severe pain is simply dismissed first as emotional instability."The auditorium fell dead silent.I caught sight of John sitting in the very back row.He sat rigid, his face completely drained of color.---I didn't stop."This isn't just one person's story. This is a shared silence many women have endured alone in emergency rooms."I was once one of those patients lying on an emergency bed, answering 'no family present' over

A year later, John came to Riverdale. That evening, as I walked out of the recovery center after my shift, I saw him standing under a streetlight. He had grown remarkably thin, and his tailored suit was noticeably wrinkled. The moment he caught sight of me, he took an instinctive step forward, then froze in his tracks."Sharon."I looked at him, my expression unbothered. "How did you find out I was here?""Sarah didn't tell me," he hastened to explain. "I saw your back in a charity news report, along with the contact email for the project."I gave a small nod. "Now that you've seen me, you can leave."John’s eyes welled up with tears. "I just wanted to know if you're doing well.""I'm doing fine."His lips parted as he searched for words. "And your health?""It's good too.""That's good..."He seemed lost for words, yet forced out another line. "Clara got married. But I suppose you don't want to hear about how things turned out for her."I replied evenly, "If you know t

I moved to coastal Riverdale.Sarah had a friend who ran a women's recovery center there, and she arranged a quiet room for me.No one here knew who I was. No one asked why my wedding had been canceled.Every morning, the nurse reminded me to take my medicine. Every afternoon, I took slow, steady walks downstairs. At first, I averted my eyes whenever I saw a baby stroller. Hearing an infant cry made me nauseous.Gradually, I learned to look without flinching. Eventually, I could even help hold a baby bottle for a patient.A wound doesn't heal overnight. But life goes on.---Three months later, my former company called to inform me that my promotion eligibility had been restored.I declined the offer. My manager, Mr. Perry, was shocked. "You prepared for this position for half a year.""I want a different life now," I replied softly.I never wanted to return to that city, where everyone knew I had been forced into making a public apology.Where everyone knew I had gotten

A month later, I returned to the city to finalize the engagement dissolution.Sarah accompanied me in the car, keeping a close eye on me to make sure I stayed hydrated."Any regrets?" she asked.I shook my head. "None.""Does it still hurt?"I stared out the window. "A little."It wasn't because I missed John. It was the sudden, hollow ache in my chest whenever I thought about the baby.Being okay didn't mean that the pain had vanished. It just meant refusing to turn back.---John was already waiting inside the law office. He had lost a significant amount of weight. The moment he saw me, he stood up in reflex."Sharon."Sarah immediately stepped in front of me. "Mr. William, please, direct your words to her legal counsel."John kept his eyes locked on me. "I only need a few minutes."I spoke calmly. "Go ahead."A faint spark lit up in his hollow eyes."I took care of everything with Clara," he said hastily. "I went to your company and cleared up the misunderstandings.

John looked everywhere, the hospital, our former home, my office, and the law firm.Sarah blocked him right at the entrance of her law office."Mr. William, Sharon does not want to see you."John's eyes were shot through with blood red veins. "She hasn't recovered yet. I just want to know where she is."Sarah let out a cold laugh. "When she was bleeding out, why didn't you care to check?"John's face turned deathly pale.Sarah handed him a separation agreement. "She's forfeiting the apartment, returning the engagement gifts, and paying the cancellation fees out of her own pocket. You just need to sign."John refused to take it. "Tell her to say that to my face.""Her exact words were, ‘looking at his face makes me sick.’"John's fingers clenched into a tight fist.He placed a settlement offer on the table instead.A house, a car, savings accounts, and company shares.Sarah glanced at it and laughed. The hospital bed sat completely bare. The blanket was neatly folded. Half a bag of saline still hung from the IV stand. On the nightstand rested a brown envelope.John stood in the doorway. His initial reaction was not panic, but total disbelief."Sharon?"Silence greeted him.He barged into the bathroom. Empty. He checked behind the window curtains. Nothing. He scanned the hallway outside. No sign of me anywhere.A nurse walked past. He grabbed her arm."Where is the patient from this room?""Miss James has already been transferred to another hospital," the nurse replied.John’s face turned white. "Who authorized her transfer?"The nurse frowned at his tone. "She signed the authorization forms herself, accompanied by her lawyer. She also updated her emergency contact details."John's voice went tight. "Who did she list?"The nurse glanced at her tablet. "Her current contact is Sarah Davis. Mr. William was listed previously, but she crossed his name out."The conta
