Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: Half Book
John said before leaving, "Just rest up and stop overthinking things."

By the following morning, my phone was ringing off the hook.

The non-stop harassment forced me to look into what was happening.

Clara had gone live on social media late last night, crying softly on camera.

She claimed she was being falsely accused of being a homewrecker and hinted that someone was using a pregnancy to trap a man into marriage.

She never uttered my name directly.

Yet my folder was conspicuously resting right behind her, with my name and the word PREGNANT clearly visible on the exposed lab result.

---

I dialed John immediately.

"Why is my medical result showing up on Clara's livestream?"

Silence stretched over the line before John answered.

"Your document folder was left in my car. She grabbed the wrong file by mistake.

"I've already ordered my team to suppress the stream," he added.

"She leaked my confidential pregnancy test live to thousands of people, and you're telling me it was a mistake?"

John kept his voice low and firm. "Now isn't the time to play the blame game.

"Clara took an overdose of pills after being attacked online," he continued. "She's in the hospital right now under observation."

I froze.

"And so? Everyone online is waiting for an explanation, Sharon. You need to issue a statement."

"A statement saying what?"

"Say that your pregnancy hormones have made you emotionally unstable, and that you misread the situation between Clara and me."

A bitter laugh nearly burst from my chest. "John, you want me to publicly confess to being a lunatic?"

"Don't put it so harshly," he snapped. "Don't escalate this further. If this blows up, it will look terrible for all of us.

"Just bow your head this once, and the whole thing will blow over."

"So she leaks my private medical records, and I'm the one who has to apologize?"

John went quiet for two full seconds.

"Sharon, you're pregnant right now. People will understand mood swings.

"She's different," he insisted. "If she gets branded as a mistress, how is she supposed to live her life after this?"

My throat felt painfully tight. "What about me?

"If I get branded as a lunatic who uses a baby to trap a man into marriage, how am I supposed to live my life?"

John's voice dropped, ice-cold. "Don't make me feel like you can't even prioritize what's important anymore."

---

My medical orders clearly specified total bed rest, avoiding emotional stress, and a severe risk of miscarriage.

Yet John felt I had more room to give.

"I won't post it."

John’s tone turned completely frigid. "If something happens to Clara, can your conscience handle that, Sharon?"

My hands trembled violently.

"She weaponized my pregnancy test on a livestream and claimed I'm trapping you with a baby, and you're asking about my conscience?"

The phone fell silent for a moment.

"I'm only asking you to yield temporarily," he finally said. "Our wedding is in two days. Don't make us a laughing stock in front of everyone."

I hung up the phone.

---

That afternoon, HR called to inform me that my promotion defense was put on hold.

The position handled sensitive client privacy.

The client side had seen the livestream and questioned whether I was in a stable mindset to handle major projects.

I had prepared for that promotion for six months.

A single livestream from Clara and a single line from John, yielding temporarily, had halted it all.

---

At eight that evening, a notification popped up in our wedding guest group chat.

It was an automated announcement synced from the wedding planning portal.

The sender showed. [Bride: Sharon James.]

[I am Sharon. Due to recent emotional volatility caused by my early pregnancy, I created a misunderstanding regarding John and Clara.]

[Clara is merely a long-time friend of John, and nothing inappropriate has occurred. Please refrain from harassing an innocent person.]

It was a shared account used by John and I, giving him admin privileges to notify guests.

I never imagined the first time he used that admin access would be to sign my name to an apology.

Clara replied instantly in the group.

[Sharon, I don't blame you.]

---

Someone screenshot the announcement and forwarded it to my company's internal group chat.

Twenty minutes later, my HR manager messaged me again.

[I just saw your public statement.]

[Since you've admitted to severe emotional instability during your pregnancy, the company will have to re-evaluate your performance and role stability.]

Clara stabbed me first.

John, worried her hands might get tired, pushed the blade in deeper for her.

---

John sent me a private text.

[I posted it for you. Don't worry, the backlash will fade soon.]

[In your current state, don't worry about these things. Let me handle it.]

---

I suddenly remembered back in the clinic room, when he answered Dr. Gates on my behalf just like this.

He told Dr. Gates I was under too much stress and added that I was paranoid.

It turned out that right from the very start, John had already decided I was guilty.

The following spring, I returned to the city to speak at a healthcare summit. The core theme was emergency escort services and post-op support for women.Doctors, charitable organization directors, and press members filled the auditorium.Standing on stage, I clicked to the final slide of my presentation. My name wasn't written on the screen. There was only a single sentence.[Never make a person in agonizing pain answer the question: "Where is your family?"]---I addressed the audience calmly. "Many women do not suffer from mild conditions."Their severe pain is simply dismissed first as emotional instability."The auditorium fell dead silent.I caught sight of John sitting in the very back row.He sat rigid, his face completely drained of color.---I didn't stop."This isn't just one person's story. This is a shared silence many women have endured alone in emergency rooms."I was once one of those patients lying on an emergency bed, answering 'no family present' over

A year later, John came to Riverdale. That evening, as I walked out of the recovery center after my shift, I saw him standing under a streetlight. He had grown remarkably thin, and his tailored suit was noticeably wrinkled. The moment he caught sight of me, he took an instinctive step forward, then froze in his tracks."Sharon."I looked at him, my expression unbothered. "How did you find out I was here?""Sarah didn't tell me," he hastened to explain. "I saw your back in a charity news report, along with the contact email for the project."I gave a small nod. "Now that you've seen me, you can leave."John’s eyes welled up with tears. "I just wanted to know if you're doing well.""I'm doing fine."His lips parted as he searched for words. "And your health?""It's good too.""That's good..."He seemed lost for words, yet forced out another line. "Clara got married. But I suppose you don't want to hear about how things turned out for her."I replied evenly, "If you know t

I moved to coastal Riverdale.Sarah had a friend who ran a women's recovery center there, and she arranged a quiet room for me.No one here knew who I was. No one asked why my wedding had been canceled.Every morning, the nurse reminded me to take my medicine. Every afternoon, I took slow, steady walks downstairs. At first, I averted my eyes whenever I saw a baby stroller. Hearing an infant cry made me nauseous.Gradually, I learned to look without flinching. Eventually, I could even help hold a baby bottle for a patient.A wound doesn't heal overnight. But life goes on.---Three months later, my former company called to inform me that my promotion eligibility had been restored.I declined the offer. My manager, Mr. Perry, was shocked. "You prepared for this position for half a year.""I want a different life now," I replied softly.I never wanted to return to that city, where everyone knew I had been forced into making a public apology.Where everyone knew I had gotten

A month later, I returned to the city to finalize the engagement dissolution.Sarah accompanied me in the car, keeping a close eye on me to make sure I stayed hydrated."Any regrets?" she asked.I shook my head. "None.""Does it still hurt?"I stared out the window. "A little."It wasn't because I missed John. It was the sudden, hollow ache in my chest whenever I thought about the baby.Being okay didn't mean that the pain had vanished. It just meant refusing to turn back.---John was already waiting inside the law office. He had lost a significant amount of weight. The moment he saw me, he stood up in reflex."Sharon."Sarah immediately stepped in front of me. "Mr. William, please, direct your words to her legal counsel."John kept his eyes locked on me. "I only need a few minutes."I spoke calmly. "Go ahead."A faint spark lit up in his hollow eyes."I took care of everything with Clara," he said hastily. "I went to your company and cleared up the misunderstandings.

John looked everywhere, the hospital, our former home, my office, and the law firm.Sarah blocked him right at the entrance of her law office."Mr. William, Sharon does not want to see you."John's eyes were shot through with blood red veins. "She hasn't recovered yet. I just want to know where she is."Sarah let out a cold laugh. "When she was bleeding out, why didn't you care to check?"John's face turned deathly pale.Sarah handed him a separation agreement. "She's forfeiting the apartment, returning the engagement gifts, and paying the cancellation fees out of her own pocket. You just need to sign."John refused to take it. "Tell her to say that to my face.""Her exact words were, ‘looking at his face makes me sick.’"John's fingers clenched into a tight fist.He placed a settlement offer on the table instead.A house, a car, savings accounts, and company shares.Sarah glanced at it and laughed. "You can't buy your way out of this."When she needed you most, you weig

The hospital bed sat completely bare. The blanket was neatly folded. Half a bag of saline still hung from the IV stand. On the nightstand rested a brown envelope.John stood in the doorway. His initial reaction was not panic, but total disbelief."Sharon?"Silence greeted him.He barged into the bathroom. Empty. He checked behind the window curtains. Nothing. He scanned the hallway outside. No sign of me anywhere.A nurse walked past. He grabbed her arm."Where is the patient from this room?""Miss James has already been transferred to another hospital," the nurse replied.John’s face turned white. "Who authorized her transfer?"The nurse frowned at his tone. "She signed the authorization forms herself, accompanied by her lawyer. She also updated her emergency contact details."John's voice went tight. "Who did she list?"The nurse glanced at her tablet. "Her current contact is Sarah Davis. Mr. William was listed previously, but she crossed his name out."The conta
