Chapter 87: The Facility

**Shaznay's POV**

Victor told me about the security payments while I nursed baby Catherine in the upstairs bedroom. His words were clipped, precise, stripped of anything unnecessary; the way he spoke when his mind was racing ahead of his mouth.

"Evelyn is funding security for a facility that should be vacant. Ongoing payments. Current." He paced the length of the room. "She released my mother but continued paying the guards."

"Which means someone else is being held there."

"Or something is being stored there." Victor stopped pacing. "Jackson is researching the facility's ownership records. I want to visit it personally."

"Victor, the last time you visited an unfamiliar location on short notice, you walked into a warehouse trap."

"That was different."

"How?"

He opened his mouth, then closed it. I raised an eyebrow.

"Take Jackson. Take four guards. And call me the moment you step inside." I shifted Catherine to my other arm. "If Evelyn is hiding another person in that facility..."

"Then her crimes extend further than we imagined."

He left within the hour. I sat in the nursery with both babies; Catherine in her crib, Iris in the borrowed bassinet Clara had brought. Clara herself was in the guest room, resting, exhausted from seven months of solo motherhood in a flat without help.

Grace found me sitting between the two bassinets.

"Two babies in one room," Grace observed from the doorway. "You are collecting Emmanuel children like stamps."

"They collected themselves." I adjusted Iris's blanket. "Mom, sit with me."

Grace settled into the rocking chair. Her Bible rested on her lap, as it always did, but her eyes were on Iris.

"She looks like Victor."

"They both do." I leaned back against the wall. "Mom, how do you do it? Accept all of this? The constant revelations, the secrets surfacing, the ground shifting beneath our feet every single week?"

"Baby, I raised you alone for three years after Samuel's first hospitalization. I washed other people's clothes for a living. I ate one meal a day so you could eat two." Grace's voice was gentle but firm. "This family is complicated, wealthy, and dramatic. But the challenges here are not harder than the ones I already survived. They are just louder."

"Evelyn might be holding another person captive."

"Evelyn is an old woman whose power is crumbling. Whatever she hid, Victor will find it." Grace opened her Bible. "And when he does, you will face it together. The way you face everything."

"You sound like Daddy."

"Where do you think he learned it?" Grace smiled.

Victor called at four thirty. His voice on the phone was strange; not angry, not frightened. Hollow.

"Shaznay."

"What did you find?"

"The facility is a private nursing home. Small. Six rooms. Heavy security." He paused. "Five rooms were empty."

"And the sixth?"

"Occupied."

"By whom?"

Another pause. Longer this time. I could hear wind in the background, as though he was standing outside.

"Shaznay, I need you to prepare yourself for what I am about to say."

"Tell me."

"The sixth room contains a woman. Elderly. Severe dementia. She has been here for nine years." Victor's breath came through the phone in a controlled exhale. "Her medical chart identifies her as Margaret Okafor."

"Margaret?" I sat up straight, nearly jostling Iris's bassinet. "Daniel's widow? The ninety-three-year-old who came to our house with Okafor?"

"The woman who came to our house was not Margaret."

The room tilted. I gripped the phone harder.

"Then who was she?"

"I do not know. But the real Margaret has been here for nearly a decade, under Evelyn's care, paying Evelyn's guards, living in Evelyn's facility." Victor's voice hardened. "Someone impersonated Margaret Okafor in our sitting room. They brought letters they claimed were Daniel's. They told stories about Simon that shaped our decisions about the Foundation."

"The Foundation distribution," I whispered. "We gave nine properties to Okafor's family based on what Margaret told us."

"Properties that may have been distributed under false pretenses."

I pressed my free hand against my forehead. The walls of the nursery felt like they were contracting, squeezing the air from the room.

"Victor, if the Margaret who visited us was a fraud... then who orchestrated the impersonation? Okafor? Evelyn? Someone else?"

"That is what I intend to discover." His voice carried the flat, dangerous calm of a man whose patience had been tested beyond its limit. "I am bringing the real Margaret back to the mansion. She needs proper care, not this isolated box."

"Can she communicate? With the dementia?"

"The staff say she has lucid moments. Brief windows when she recognizes faces and speaks clearly." Victor paused. "During one of those windows, I showed her a photograph of the woman who visited our house. The woman who claimed to be her."

"And?"

"Margaret looked at the photograph and said one word. Just one." Victor's voice dropped. "She said, 'Evelyn.'"

I stared at the two babies sleeping in their bassinets. At the nursery walls Victor and I had painted together. At the small architectural model on the windowsill that I built for Catherine's first birthday.

Everything we constructed was built on a foundation riddled with lies. Every time we cleared one deception, another surfaced beneath it, like rot spreading through wood that appeared solid from the outside.

"Come home," I said into the phone. "Bring Margaret. Bring everything you found."

"I am on my way."

I ended the call and sat in the silence of the nursery, listening to my daughter breathe, and my husband's secret daughter breathe beside her, and I wondered how many more rooms in Evelyn's empire contained people we did not know about, living lives we could not imagine, trapped inside walls that the world believed were empty.

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 93: Dorinda's Trial

**Shaznay's POV**The courtroom felt smaller than the one where Valda was convicted. A regional court, modest and efficient, without the cameras and reporters that turned the Emmanuel trial into a national spectacle.Dorinda's charges were narrower: fraud, coercion, exploitation of a vulnerable adult. The prosecutors did not pursue attempted murder because her role in the poisoning conspiracy was secondary; she was a tool, not an architect.Victor and I sat in the second row. Grace was beside me, her hands folded in her lap, her face composed with the hard-earned stillness of a woman who had made peace with her own history. Samuel waited in the witness room, preparing to testify.Dorinda was brought in through the side door. She had aged since her arrest. Her hair, once meticulously styled, hung limp around her shoulders. Her prison clothes were too large for her frame. The sharp, commanding woman who once controlled our household was gone; replaced by someone diminished, hollowed, th

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 92: The Vault Revisited

**Victor's POV**The sub-basement of the Westfield Tower smelled different from the last visit. Colder. Sharper. The scent of fresh air mixing with old stone, suggesting someone had opened a passage that was sealed before.Jackson led the way with two guards. Shaznay walked behind me, her hand gripping the back of my jacket. The corridor was narrow, lit by overhead strips that cast harsh white light on concrete walls."The vault door is open," Jackson said, stopping at the threshold. "It was locked when we left last month.""How did she get in?""The original key was registered to three holders. Simon Emmanuel, the Millbrook law firm, and..." Jackson checked his notes. "E.M. Holdings.""Evelyn's shell company.""Florence could have accessed the key through Evelyn's assets."I stepped past Jackson into the vault. The shelves remained as before; lined with document boxes, coated in dust. The desk sat in the center, the journal and envelope already removed. But something had changed. One

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 91: Samuel's Blood

**Shaznay's POV**We found my father at the garden bench at eight in the morning. He sat with a cup of tea balanced on his knee, watching the birds pull worms from the wet grass. His face was calm, rested, carrying the serene confidence of a man who believed the worst storms had passed.I held Victor's hand as we approached. The letters were in a folder tucked under Victor's arm."Two of you, this early, holding hands with those faces." Samuel set his cup on the bench. "Somebody tell me before I imagine the worst.""Daddy, we found something.""Sit down, both of you."We sat. Victor on one side, me on the other. Samuel between us, his broad hands resting on his knees."The facility where Victor's mother was held," I began. "We discovered an elderly woman inside. Margaret Okafor. She had information about Simon Emmanuel's history.""Go on.""Margaret told us that Simon had three sons. Daniel, from his first wife. Richard, from Evelyn." I paused. My throat tightened. "And a third. Born

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 90: The Blood Between Us

**Victor's POV** I stood in Okafor's kitchen with the phone against my ear and the floor dissolving beneath me. Samuel Jackson was Simon Emmanuel's third son. Which made Samuel my grandfather's child. Which made Shaznay... my aunt's daughter? No. Samuel was Simon's son from a different generation. Shaznay's father and my father were half-brothers. Richard and Samuel were brothers. Shaznay and I were cousins. "Victor?" Her voice on the phone was strained, cracking. "Victor, say something." "Come home. Bring the letters. We need Moses." "Victor, if my father is Simon's son... if Richard and Samuel shared the same father..." "We figure it out. At home. With legal counsel." My mind was spinning through implications faster than I could catch them. "Shaznay, do not read the rest of the letters until I am with you." "I... okay. Okay." I ended the call and gripped Okafor's kitchen counter. My knuckles turned white against the granite. Okafor stood across the room, watching me with u

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 89: Margaret's Window

**Shaznay's POV**I sat beside Margaret's bed at nine the following morning. The guest suite in the west wing was warm, bright, the curtains drawn back to let sunlight pool across the floor. Margaret lay propped against pillows, her eyes closed, her breathing shallow. The nurse had warned me: the lucid periods came without pattern. Sometimes minutes apart. Sometimes days.I waited. On my lap, I held the leather journal from Simon's vault; the one Victor found beneath the Westfield Tower. If Margaret had been part of Simon's world, perhaps the journal's pages would trigger recognition. At nine forty, Margaret's eyes opened. They drifted, unfocused, then sharpened."Where am I?""The Emmanuel mansion. You are safe, Margaret."She turned her head. Studied my face. "You are the architect.""Yes. Shaznay.""Victor's wife." A faint smile. "Simon said the women in this family would be the ones who fixed things.""He was right." I leaned closer. "Margaret, I need to ask you about the woman. E

  • His Heart Stopped.. Mine Was Sold   Chapter 88: The Real Margaret

**Victor's POV**Margaret arrived at the mansion in a wheelchair, attended by the private nurse I hired to replace Evelyn's staff at the facility. She was frail, her hands shaking, her eyes clouded with the fog of her condition, but when Jackson wheeled her through the front door, she looked up at the chandelier in the entrance hall and whispered, "Simon's house."She recognized the mansion. Through nine years of dementia, through captivity, through whatever Evelyn had done to erase her from the world... she remembered.I knelt before her wheelchair. "Margaret, can you hear me?"Her eyes drifted, unfocused. Then sharpened. A momentary clearing, like sunlight through storm clouds."You are Richard's boy," she said. Her voice was papery, distant."Yes. Victor.""Victor." She tasted the name. "Simon talked about you. Said you would be strong.""Margaret, the woman who came to this house. The one who pretended to be you. Do you know who she was?"Her brow creased. The clarity wavered, thr
