Chapter 2

Autor: Forty-nine
The next morning I woke up and the other side of the bed had been cold for hours.

Numb, I opened Instagram. Cecilia had posted ten minutes earlier: Craving a sandwich, so Don Moretti drove twenty-five miles to get me one, then dropped me at the office on his way back.

I remembered all the nights I had stayed up until dawn handling Family business, then asked him to drop me at headquarters because he was going that way.

He always refused, flat and cold. He never rearranged anything for me.

Back then, I thought he was simply made that way, that he treated everyone with the same coldness. Now I understood. He had only ever refused to make room for me.

I drove myself to Moretti Family headquarters.

As I stepped into the elevator, I heard the people in front of me talking.

"Did you see Don Moretti just now? That was Cecilia Bellini getting out of his car, wasn't it? Everyone knows she's the one he's loved all these years."

"I heard the whole residence was custom-built for Cecilia. Even the dinnerware was made a size smaller so it would fit her hands. Grace has lived there all this time and probably still hasn't figured it out."

"A stand-in is a stand-in. The real one comes home, and the stand-in exits."

I listened to them laughing and said nothing.

When the doors opened, I walked out.

They saw me, and the conversation died mid-sentence. They lowered their heads, with no idea where to look.

I returned to my desk without a flicker of expression. I had just opened the classified project files when Lucy Carter, one of my people, knocked and came in.

"Donna, Don Moretti wants you in the top-floor study right now."

The top-floor study was where the Moretti Family handled its most sensitive business.

I pushed the door open. Besides Damian, the advisor and several of the territory bosses were seated inside, and off to one side sat Cecilia, looking soft and harmless.

Damian looked up. "The arms supply plan submitted yesterday had every quantity and model number wrong, causing losses when the factory began production. Explain."

My gaze went to Cecilia, and everything came clear at once.

I had checked that production plan three times before handing it to Cecilia to enter and file.

I kept my voice even. "I went over that plan three times. The error did not happen at my end."

Damian looked down at the report in his hand. "I know. Cece already came forward about the oversight. This is her first time handling Family business. If it leaves a mark on her record, how do you think the rest of the Family will see her?"

He lifted his eyes to me, his tone softening a fraction. "You're the Donna. No one is going to say anything about you. So we'll blame the failure on you publicly. Your team's entire annual bonus will go toward the Family's losses."

The cold went straight through me. So he had called me up here to take the fall for the woman he had never stopped loving.

"I don't accept that."

"It's already decided. I'm informing you, not asking you." Damian finished and walked out with the advisor and the territory bosses, leaving me alone with Cecilia.

The people who had built the Moretti Family alongside us were all bosses and captains now, each with territory and power of their own.

I alone had received nothing but the empty title of Donna and a body riddled with ailments. Everything else had been kept out of my hands.

The Family elders had proposed more than once that I be given control of the port. Damian refused every time.

"You're already the Donna. If I give you any more power, my men will accuse me of favoritism."

For the sake of Damian's standing, I did the work and swallowed the cost, year after year.

Cecilia's eyes gleamed with triumph. She threw it right at me. "Grace, I'll tell you the truth. I changed the quantities and model numbers on purpose. Damian and I grew up together. Every elder in this Family knows it. You're nothing but a piece he moved to keep the Family stable. You took the title that should have been mine. Did you really think you were the Donna?"

Rage came up through my chest and I was shaking with it. I could take any amount of humiliation and unfairness aimed at me. The one thing I could not take was it landing on the people around me.

Lucy's mother was terminally ill, and Lucy needed that bonus to pay for surgery.

For six months, I had traveled overseas for that project, reworked the proposal again and again, and finally closed the deal, all for the bonus that would come when production began.

Everyone's work, wrecked for her amusement.

I brought my hand up and slapped Cecilia across her perfectly made-up face. A bright red print rose on that pale skin, and Cecilia froze where she stood.

Damian heard the slap and came through the door. He crossed the room in long strides and pulled Cecilia behind him. His eyes held a panic and tenderness I had never seen before.

He turned on me, and his voice cracked out like a whip. "Grace. Apologize!"

"I don't want an apology." Cecilia sniffed, and her voice went small and injured. "I want it to be fair. She hit me, so I get to hit her back."

  • His Heart Was Never Mine   Chapter 8

Time went fast. I had said goodbye to the past and settled fully into life in Europe. After finishing the program, I saved what I earned from my designs and opened a small independent studio specializing in adaptive reuse and architectural redesign. I built a real name for myself in Europe's architecture scene.I said yes when Julian proposed. He was the one who had been at my side through all of it, healing what had been torn in me with nothing but gentleness. We walked every street in Europe and watched more sunsets than I can count. When my hand flared up he would put warm compresses on it, and he could never stand to let me carry anything heavy. That steadiness was something I had never known.Because I trusted him that much, I told him about Lucy. That tragedy, born out of one man's favoritism, was the thing I had buried deepest and refused to speak about for so long.Julian wiped the tears from the corner of my eye, and his gaze was steady and sure. "Grace, if it hurts too much y

After months at the residency in Europe, I had almost forgotten the darkness I left behind. Then Damian appeared and dragged my thoughts back into the past.He had once ruled New York's Mafia world with ruthless speed and absolute decisiveness. The man in front of me had a rumpled suit and eyes shot through with red, worn down to nothing, with none of the settled authority he used to carry. Our eyes met and nothing in me moved at all. Julian saw me go still and put a hand on my shoulder without thinking. "What is it?"I was about to answer when Damian ignored the traffic, strode straight across the road, and ran toward me, urgently calling my name."Grace." His face was frantic, his tone almost humble. The Damian I knew was always cold with me. He had never once said my name with that kind of urgency. He always said we did not need to be too close. This tenderness arriving now made me sick.Julian immediately sensed my wariness and disgust. Without a word, he stepped half a pace in fro

(Grace’s POV)It was only when I met the director of the European program that I understood I had actually made a choice. The director brought out some of my earliest work. "Ms. Sterling, we loved the pieces you sent us all those years ago."I grew up in an orphanage, in days that were cramped and airless. What carried me through all those nights was an architecture and design show on television.I had never received any formal art training. Armed with only a few episodes of that show and sheer passion, I learned how to submit my work and mailed in my drawings.Maybe fate was being kind and giving me one chance. I was holding the ticket to Europe in my hand when Damian called. What I felt for him when I was young had gone in too deep. He was the one beam of light in a gray childhood. So when he asked me to marry him, I tore that ticket up without a second of hesitation and stayed in the dark for his sake. What I thought was two people running toward each other was, in the end, a one-wo

(Third person’s POV)By the time Damian reached Cecilia's house, he found out that the urgent matter she had described was a mouse that had gotten inside. He could not help thinking about Grace's red-rimmed eyes and how thin she had looked when he left the hospital. His men caught the mouse quickly.Unease gnawed at Damian. He was reaching for his phone to call Grace back when Cecilia wrapped both arms around him. "Damian, that mouse terrified me. I'm scared. Can't you stay with me tonight?"Before, Cecilia only had to ask once and he would never refuse. Now his mind was fixed on Grace at the hospital. He pushed Cecilia away and put deliberate space between them. "I have something to deal with. I have to go."Cecilia stared, visibly thrown. Then she arranged her face into a pitiful expression. "Damian, what if I'm here alone and another mouse turns up? Or a roach?"She looped her arms around his neck. Damian felt nothing but irritation, with guilt underneath it.He used to think Cecili

The ambulance raced to the hospital with Lucy inside.I held her cold hand the entire ride, shaking so hard I could not stop.My parents died when I was small, and I entered the cold world of the Mafia while I was still a child, with no one to protect me and no one to favor me. I had learned to live with it long ago.Lucy was the only one who ever saw through everything I was pretending to be. In all the times I was cut down, she was the one who talked me through it and kept me whole. When the Family turned on itself, she was the one who put herself in front of me. I ended up the Donna and she ended up working for me, but to me she was family.By the time we reached the ER, my hands would not stop shaking. The old injury sent agony through every nerve in my body.Damian looked at how wrung out I was, and for once the coldness fell away. He pulled me into his arms."It's all right. I'm here."That faint warmth left me with one last sliver of hope.Maybe he was not entirely without a hea

Not long before, the Family had been attacked, and a bullet had wounded me badly enough to leave a row of stitches along my neck. She knew that even a light slap would split the wound open and leave me bleeding uncontrollably.Damian glanced at the wound on my neck and something like worry crossed his face. He started forward, and Cecilia caught his arm and held on.She covered her cheek, eyes red and brimming, her voice breaking. "Damian, I didn't do it on purpose. I only made a mistake. Why would Grace do this to me..." Then she glanced at me, calculation flashing in her eyes.He had been standing right outside the door. He had heard every word Cecilia said. He knew this was not my fault, he knew I had been set up, and he knew exactly how bad the wound on my neck was.He looked down at Cecilia in his arms. Conflict tightened his face, but in the end he forced out a single word. "Fine."One word, and the last of my dignity was ground into powder.Outside the door, members of every ran
