I called the international number. The director of the program answered, "Grace Sterling? Your application to our private residential arts program has been approved. You can begin as soon as you arrive, and it includes a path to permanent residency. Are you sure this is what you want?"

I looked at the two of them laughing together in the restaurant and quietly said yes.

I hung up. Damian came out under an umbrella.

I thought he had seen me standing there soaked through, and I opened my mouth to speak. Instead, he turned and held the umbrella over Cecilia Bellini.

New York in high summer was sweltering. I was cold all the way through.

For two hours I walked home in the downpour.

My wrist was screaming, and I forced it down and carried a heavy box of files into the house, dripping everywhere.

I had barely set it down when I heard steady footsteps in the entryway.

Damian's eyes moved over my tangled hair and my soaked clothes, and his brows drew together.

"With rain coming down this hard, why didn't you get under cover? Did you really have to come home looking like this?"

Not one word about my hand, not one word about how I had gotten home. All he saw was that I had failed to look dignified as the Donna.

My hand hurt so much it had gone numb. I had nothing left in me to argue with him.

Damian was silent for two seconds. He tossed me a towel, then handed me a cup of coffee. "I just had one of my men pick it up. It's the right temperature. Try it."

I took the cup, and a trace of warmth stirred in my chest. In all the time I had known him, he had never shown me this kind of concern.

As I sat down on the sofa with the coffee, I accidentally knocked Damian's phone off the armrest.

A message from his pinned contact, Cece, lit up the screen at exactly that moment.

Don Moretti was worried the cafe might not be clean, so he made this himself for me. It's so good.

In the photo, she was sitting where I was sitting now, holding a small custom cup in both hands.

Every senior member of the Family had liked the post. No one commented. They all understood.

I understood in an instant.

Before Cecilia joined the organization, she brought gifts for everyone. Mine was a broken cup. Her mouth said sorry; her eyes gloated.

Cecilia's coffee had been served in one of the custom cups. Mine had been a thoughtless pickup from a cafe.

I took a sip. It was cloyingly sweet, and I choked into a fit of coughing. A bolt of pain shot through my body.

I stood up and poured the whole cup down the drain.

"If you didn't want it, say so. You dump it out without a word, so what are you sulking about now?" Damian's face darkened, but his tone eased again almost at once, and he tried to sound concerned. "Are you just tired today? Is that it?"

I did not defend myself. I held the phone up in front of his face.

He read the post. For a moment, he looked caught off guard, but his face quickly smoothed over. He sounded completely certain of himself. "It's one casual Instagram post. You have to twist it into something ugly and make a scene?"

My voice shook, and I could not suppress the chill spreading through me. "Damian, you have never once let me ride in your car. Why is she allowed?"

There was not a trace of guilt in him. "She's delicate. She shouldn't be out in the rain. You've been at my side for years. You should be more understanding.

"Besides, she's the daughter of one of our allies. Of course I look after her. You're the Donna. Are you really going to keep score with a girl her age? Doesn't that embarrass you?"

I stood there looking at this man who was so familiar and so completely a stranger.

Years ago, at a society party, a group of them shoved me in front of Damian Moretti as a cruel joke. He was already one of New York's rising powers.

They said that if Damian said he liked me, they would let me go.

Everyone was waiting for me to humiliate myself. While I stood there mortified and helpless, he was the one who reached out a hand. "I like you."

That tiny spark of light from my youth became an obsession I carried for years, the reason I was willing to give him everything.

Later, when he needed a marriage to shore up the Family, he came to me for help. I thought it was happiness arriving late. I thought that loving someone enough could change anything.

Only then did I finally see the truth. Everyone said Damian Moretti, Don of the Family, was ruthless, that no one alive could ever warm his heart.

Only then did I believe them. It was not that his heart was cold. It was never mine.

I swallowed all of it down and spoke calmly. "You're right about everything."

  • His Heart Was Never Mine   Chapter 8

Time went fast. I had said goodbye to the past and settled fully into life in Europe. After finishing the program, I saved what I earned from my designs and opened a small independent studio specializing in adaptive reuse and architectural redesign. I built a real name for myself in Europe's architecture scene.I said yes when Julian proposed. He was the one who had been at my side through all of it, healing what had been torn in me with nothing but gentleness. We walked every street in Europe and watched more sunsets than I can count. When my hand flared up he would put warm compresses on it, and he could never stand to let me carry anything heavy. That steadiness was something I had never known.Because I trusted him that much, I told him about Lucy. That tragedy, born out of one man's favoritism, was the thing I had buried deepest and refused to speak about for so long.Julian wiped the tears from the corner of my eye, and his gaze was steady and sure. "Grace, if it hurts too much y

After months at the residency in Europe, I had almost forgotten the darkness I left behind. Then Damian appeared and dragged my thoughts back into the past.He had once ruled New York's Mafia world with ruthless speed and absolute decisiveness. The man in front of me had a rumpled suit and eyes shot through with red, worn down to nothing, with none of the settled authority he used to carry. Our eyes met and nothing in me moved at all. Julian saw me go still and put a hand on my shoulder without thinking. "What is it?"I was about to answer when Damian ignored the traffic, strode straight across the road, and ran toward me, urgently calling my name."Grace." His face was frantic, his tone almost humble. The Damian I knew was always cold with me. He had never once said my name with that kind of urgency. He always said we did not need to be too close. This tenderness arriving now made me sick.Julian immediately sensed my wariness and disgust. Without a word, he stepped half a pace in fro

(Grace’s POV)It was only when I met the director of the European program that I understood I had actually made a choice. The director brought out some of my earliest work. "Ms. Sterling, we loved the pieces you sent us all those years ago."I grew up in an orphanage, in days that were cramped and airless. What carried me through all those nights was an architecture and design show on television.I had never received any formal art training. Armed with only a few episodes of that show and sheer passion, I learned how to submit my work and mailed in my drawings.Maybe fate was being kind and giving me one chance. I was holding the ticket to Europe in my hand when Damian called. What I felt for him when I was young had gone in too deep. He was the one beam of light in a gray childhood. So when he asked me to marry him, I tore that ticket up without a second of hesitation and stayed in the dark for his sake. What I thought was two people running toward each other was, in the end, a one-wo

(Third person’s POV)By the time Damian reached Cecilia's house, he found out that the urgent matter she had described was a mouse that had gotten inside. He could not help thinking about Grace's red-rimmed eyes and how thin she had looked when he left the hospital. His men caught the mouse quickly.Unease gnawed at Damian. He was reaching for his phone to call Grace back when Cecilia wrapped both arms around him. "Damian, that mouse terrified me. I'm scared. Can't you stay with me tonight?"Before, Cecilia only had to ask once and he would never refuse. Now his mind was fixed on Grace at the hospital. He pushed Cecilia away and put deliberate space between them. "I have something to deal with. I have to go."Cecilia stared, visibly thrown. Then she arranged her face into a pitiful expression. "Damian, what if I'm here alone and another mouse turns up? Or a roach?"She looped her arms around his neck. Damian felt nothing but irritation, with guilt underneath it.He used to think Cecili

The ambulance raced to the hospital with Lucy inside.I held her cold hand the entire ride, shaking so hard I could not stop.My parents died when I was small, and I entered the cold world of the Mafia while I was still a child, with no one to protect me and no one to favor me. I had learned to live with it long ago.Lucy was the only one who ever saw through everything I was pretending to be. In all the times I was cut down, she was the one who talked me through it and kept me whole. When the Family turned on itself, she was the one who put herself in front of me. I ended up the Donna and she ended up working for me, but to me she was family.By the time we reached the ER, my hands would not stop shaking. The old injury sent agony through every nerve in my body.Damian looked at how wrung out I was, and for once the coldness fell away. He pulled me into his arms."It's all right. I'm here."That faint warmth left me with one last sliver of hope.Maybe he was not entirely without a hea

  • His Heart Was Never Mine   Chapter 3

Not long before, the Family had been attacked, and a bullet had wounded me badly enough to leave a row of stitches along my neck. She knew that even a light slap would split the wound open and leave me bleeding uncontrollably.Damian glanced at the wound on my neck and something like worry crossed his face. He started forward, and Cecilia caught his arm and held on.She covered her cheek, eyes red and brimming, her voice breaking. "Damian, I didn't do it on purpose. I only made a mistake. Why would Grace do this to me..." Then she glanced at me, calculation flashing in her eyes.He had been standing right outside the door. He had heard every word Cecilia said. He knew this was not my fault, he knew I had been set up, and he knew exactly how bad the wound on my neck was.He looked down at Cecilia in his arms. Conflict tightened his face, but in the end he forced out a single word. "Fine."One word, and the last of my dignity was ground into powder.Outside the door, members of every ran
