Lucas returned to the family estate after Victor's call. He knew the conversation would not be pleasant, but he refused to arrive looking defensive. He parked in the usual spot and walked through the front entrance with his shoulders straight and his expression neutral.

Victor was waiting in his office. The room was exactly as Lucas remembered it, dark wood and floor-to-ceiling windows, the city spread out below like something Victor owned rather than something he merely lived above.

  • His Hidden Devotion.    Chapter 42 - What He Kept.

Teresa did not call Lucas. She sat with Florence’s notebook for hours, reading every page, and what she found was not just evidence against Asher but evidence of Lucas. His handwriting appeared in the margins, small notes in dark ink, dates he had added, names of people to contact and documents to preserve. By morning she had understood something she was not ready to understand before. The file in his study was never a hobby or a precaution. It was a life’s work, built slowly and secretly, by a man who believed he would never be allowed to use it openly.Teresa closed the notebook and drove to his house without warning.Lucas was in his study when she walked in. He looked up from his desk, surprised, and then his gaze dropped to the notebook in her hands and something in his expression shifted. He did not pretend not to recognize it.She set it on his desk.“I’m not leaving until you tell me everything,” she said.He looked at the notebook, then at her. “Teresa.”“Do you remember the

Teresa opened her mouth. Nothing came out. Florence stepped aside and held the door open. “Come in before the neighbors start watching.”The flat was warm and simple, filled with the smell of tea and something baking. Florence gestured to a small table near the window and set a cup in front of Teresa without asking whether she wanted it.Teresa wrapped her hands around the cup but did not drink.“You worked in the house for three years,” Teresa said. “Asher dismissed you without explanation.”Florence sat down across from her. “He did.”“Do you know why?”“I have my guesses.” Florence’s voice was calm. “I stopped being useful to him the morning I asked you if you were all right. He heard me. I was gone by the end of the week.”Teresa stared at her tea. She remembered that morning, vaguely, the way you remembered something half-buried. Florence had touched her arm in the hallway and asked if she needed anything. Teresa had said no. She had said it automatically, the way she said it to

  • His Hidden Devotion.    Chapter 40 - The report she retracted.

Teresa sat in Natalie's office the morning after the phone call, still wearing the clothes she had slept in. She had not changed out of them, she had barely slept. The only thing she had done was drive here, because Natalie had said the words your own history and Teresa had spent the entire night trying not to imagine what that meant.Natalie had the new submission spread across her desk. She did not soften it. "Before I show you this," Natalie said, "I need you to understand something. Asher is not arguing that you are unfit because of Lucas anymore. He is arguing that you are unfit because of your past. And this time, he has documents."Teresa's hands were folded in her lap. She kept them still.Natalie slid the first page across the desk. Teresa looked down at it, and the room tilted. She recognized it immediately. A police report from the third year of her marriage. The night Asher had put his hand through the wall beside her head. She had called the police because she had been te

Lucas sat in his apartment, staring at the message from Victor. The words had not changed since he first read them, but their weight had settled deeper into his chest with every passing hour."If you insist on choosing Teresa, I will make sure Asher understands exactly how to use that choice against her."He had not told Teresa. He knew she would blame herself. She would see his choice as the reason for whatever came next, and she would try to protect him from it the way she tried to protect everyone. He could not let her carry that.Instead, he tried to think through what Victor could realistically do. His father had influence. He had money. He had people who owed him favors and he also knew Asher had his own motives. Until now, the two men had been operating separately, even when their actions benefited each other. They did not trust each other. They did not work together and that was about to change.✦ . ⁺ . ✦ . ⁺ . ✦Asher received the message. "We need to talk. Privately. T

The room was exactly as Lucas remembered it, dark wood and floor-to-ceiling windows, the city spread out below like something Victor owned rather than something he merely lived above. There was no shouting or any dramatic confrontation. Victor sat behind his desk, calm and composed, his hands folded in front of him."You've rejected Isabella," Victor said."Yes, dad."Victor nodded slowly, as though he had expected that answer but had hoped to be proven wrong. "The Whitfields are not merely a family we are trying to impress. Their partnership could affect the company's expansion. It could affect your future position within the business."Lucas kept his voice even. "Business partnerships

Teresa did not answer Lucas's message immediately. She read it several times during the drive home, her thumb hovering over the screen without typing a reply. Then she locked her phone and set it face down on her lap. Natalie noticed her mood but did not ask. She understood that Teresa needed time to process what had just happened. When Teresa got home, the apartment was quiet. Emma was asleep, her small body curled around her stuffed rabbit. Mrs. Lim stood in the kitchen doorway, a dish towel in her hands."She asked about Lucas earlier," Mrs. Lim said quietly. "Wanted to know why he hasn't showed up at all. I told her things were complicated right now."Teresa's chest tightened. "What did she say?""She said she understood." Mrs. Lim paused. "But she looked sad."Teresa nodded and thanked her. Mrs. Lim left for the night, and Teresa stood in Emma's doorway for several moments, watching her daughter sleep. The quiet gave Lucas's words even more weight. She had spent months trying to
