Julian turned his face away, refusing to touch that last remark.

His voice dropped low and steady, “You never thought any of the things you did would come out, did you? You cost two people their lives. My brother was in the prime of his damn life.”

Serena snorted. “Don’t twist it. The one who wanted your brother and your father dead was one of his business rivals. Not me. I’m not that powerful.”

“You—” Julian’s brows drew tighter. “You really want to say you had nothing to do with it? Then why did you stir everyone up at the funeral, calling me an unfilial son? You knew I was off-grid camping—I couldn’t receive a single message.”

“They died, and suddenly you became the rightful heir. And why should everything go to you? I’ve put in more than enough in this family.” Serena shot back.

“And WHAT do you know about business anyway?”

“That company was built by my grandfather,” Julian said, each word clipped. “Even if someone else inherited it, it sure as hell wasn’t going to be you.”

Leaking trade secrets?A wave of sharp inhales rippled through the room.Had Serena really been doing all this right under the company’s nose?If Julian’s accusations were true, then she’d already been feeding Ashford’s proprietary information to competitors while her husband Philip was still alive. After Philip’s death, she continued acting as proxy shareholder, quietly funneling years of dividends and bonuses into shell companies under her own name, trying to launder them into so-called “legitimate income.”But dividends and profit distributions never belonged to her personally. She was only a proxy—not the actual shareholder. She was allowed to receive them on behalf of the estate, not redirect them for her own use.And if one followed that thread far enough… who was to say she hadn’t abused her position as a board member elsewhere? Investment decisions, acquisitions, R&D approvals—if she’d skimmed from any of those, the implications were far worse than anyone wanted to imagine.O

The next morning, in the Ashford Biotech executive conference room, several board members had already arrived. They chatted casually while waiting.“So this isn’t a scheduled meeting. What exactly are we here to announce?”“Don’t tell me it’s about proposing Marcus for a board seat?”“No way,” someone shot back immediately. “He not only screwed up the Winthrop engagement, he offended them too. Sure, we’ve got other hospital groups we can work with, but Winthrop is the top private hospital system in the country. You really think Marcus still has a shot at the board? I’m surprised he can even keep his current position.”“Well, he did sign a few international contracts recently and expanded operations in Europe. Shouldn’t that make up for something?”“That’s not ‘making up for’ anything—that’s literally his job.” Someone snorted.By the time they went back and forth a few more rounds, more people had arrived, and conversations shifted to other mundane topics.Once almost everyone was pr

When Serena heard the first half of Julian’s sentence, satisfaction lit up her face—but by the time he finished, her brows slowly drew together. Why… why bring up his father? She almost convinced herself she was overthinking it—until Julian spoke again.“If you’re that upset,” he said coolly, “you can leave.”Detached. Flat. Glacial.“WHAT?” Serena jerked toward him, certain she’d misheard. Her two friends exchanged a quick, alarmed look before jumping in:“Julian, ARE you out of your mind? You misspoke, right? Your wife is the one disrespecting your mother.”“Exactly! Your mother raised you, loved you more than your real one ever did. You always listened to her—your whole life!”“Come on, apologize. We’ll pretend we didn’t hear that.”Julian closed his eyes for a slow blink, letting their chatter burn out. When he opened them again, the warmth was gone. What remained was sharp, icy, merciless.“I’m done playing,” he said quietly. “This little ‘perfect mother and obedient son’ act? It

It wasn’t long before Violet came downstairs, carrying a beautifully wrapped box in both hands. Serena and her two friends exchanged a quick glance—too quick—before they pretended to sip their tea as if nothing had happened.Violet stepped forward and held the box out toward Serena. Serena glanced at it… but didn’t take it.Violet blinked, unsure, and took a small step closer. And that was when someone—whether by “accident” or not—stuck out a foot.Violet’s toe caught. Her whole body pitched forward. Her first instinct was to clutch the box as tightly as she could. Cold sweat broke out instantly. Everything seemed to move in slow motion, but she couldn’t stop it—her fingers slipped, the box shot out of her hands——and just before her body hit the floor, an arm wrapped around her waist from behind, yanking her upright. Her back landed against Julian’s chest. His grip was strong, steady… but the moment her lower back brushed his abdomen, he flinched—just barely—and pulled back. She didn

In the next second, the man who’d been sitting on the sofa was already out the door like an arrow.Craig lunged after him, grabbing Julian’s coat from the chair as he sprinted out.“Please don’t panic,” Craig said quickly, catching up to him. “She only sprained her wrist. The car’s pulled over now. She’s switching to the security team’s vehicle.”Julian’s steps finally slowed. He paused halfway through fastening his shirt buttons, a deep frown carving his brows.“Are you sure? Where exactly did she get hurt? And what happened to the car? We switched vehicles multiple times—how did they still track her?”The “they” needed no clarification.Craig shook his head. “This one looks like a genuine accident. Another car sped up from behind trying to cut lanes. Her driver swerved, the car fishtailed a bit, then clipped the barrier and stopped. Front end’s smashed, but no rollover.”Julian considered that for two seconds. “No. I’m going to her.”Craig immediately stepped in front of him, arms o
