RAYNA

“Divorce?” Cassian grabbed the documents out of my hands, reading it. “You must be out of your mind, Ray. Didn’t I tell you I had a project I’m working on? A scandal like this is going to destroy my company.” He shot.

My eyes narrowed, “Your company? Are you serious, Cassian?”

“I am serious. If you…had a little bit of dignity left in you, you would do this for me. Afterall, I picked you out of the slums–“

“Shut up!” My scream cut him off. My breath came in short gasps. “I don’t want to hear you say a word about my family. I was doing fine until I married you, and that was when my life tumbled. I gave everything for you, and you repay me by going around with a woman who killed our son? You are a devil, Cassian!”

“You can say whatever you want, I’m not getting divorced with you until I sign that contract.” He shot.

“Sign it now.” I stepped into his front, stopping him from simply walking away.

“What’s going on?” A small voice asked and we both turned, just to see Tahlia right in front of our room. I scoffed lightly.

She even knew the passcode to our house? What else is left for her to take away from me?

“Tahlia, what are you doing here?” Cassian’s harsh voice instantly switched as he walked towards her immediately. “You are not yet well enough to walk around, you should have called me if you needed something.”

“I’m fine. You just forgot a document in my house.”

He’d gone to her house last night.

I gulped, running my fingers over my hair as tears pricked my eyes.

“But what is this that I hear about divorce?” Tahlia asked, walking past him to stare at me. “Rayna, if it’s about what happened yesterday, I’m really sorry. I swear I didn’t mean to come between you both and scatter your marriage.”

I stared at her. “You already did.”

“Rayna, but–“

“Step away from me.” I warned and she flattened her lips, taking a step backwards.

But then–

She suddenly fell to her knees, startling me. “Rayna, I’m so sorry. I shouldn’t have contacted Cassian that night. I shouldn’t have made him come to me yesterday. I didn’t know Ryan would…”

Her words trailed off.

I didn’t even flinch. Her apologies were meaningless to me.

“It’s enough, Tahlia. Just tell Cassian to sign the divorce papers and I’m done with him.” I made my way towards the door and without warning, she grabbed me.

“Rayna, please–“

“Let go of me!” I shoved her away lightly, trying to pull away.

She stumbled backwards and hit her head on the bed frame.

A gasp escaped my lips as she immediately went unconscious.

“Tahlia!” Cassian rushed past me, shoving me to the floor, so hard my back hit the door post. He didn’t bother looking at me as panic crossed his face. “Ambulance…NOW!”

****

“She’s unconscious.” The nurse said, “But don’t worry, she’ll wake up soon.”

My stomach knots as she walked away, and in that instant, Cassian turned towards me, anger evident on his face.

“You caused this! How could you push her?”

“It’s not my fault. She grabbed me–“

“She was begging you! I didn’t think you were such an evil woman, Rayna. You are so despicable!” He spat, walking into the ward.

Nurses turned to look at me, disgust written on their faces.

So this is now my fault? All I wanted was a divorce from him. She was the one who got into my house unannounced.

“You wench!!!” I had no time to move backwards as Marcelline rushed towards me, grabbing my hair in her palms. “How dare you bring my daughter to the hospital? How dare you wicked woman!”

“Let me…go!” I grabbed her hands, pushing her away.

She stared at me, arrows shooting out of her eyes and the next thing, she fell on the floor.

“Help me out! This woman…married my son and wants to kill me also. Having sent my daughter to the hospital, she wants to take my life…what did I do to you?”

I gasped, tears in my eyes as I stared at her. They are turning everything on me, making me look like a bad person.

“You are so evil. Having married into our family, you want to take charge…that’s impossible!” She spat.

I stumbled backwards, heart pounding, tears blurring my vision. People were beginning to whisper.

I turned fully, staring one last time at the two people in the ward. Tahlia was awake now, smiling and getting kisses from Cassian like no other people were in the world with them. She glanced at me and I could swear she smirked right then.

Roughly wiping my tears, I stepped out of the hospital. I won’t cry for them. No. It was over with this marriage.

“Blue ridge estate.” I muttered as I stopped a cab.

Ten minutes later and I stared at the room, where I’d once loved Cassian, where he’d once kissed me and made promises to me never to leave him. A room, where I’d slept in the same bed with him and my son.

I won’t stay. I won’t let myself get broken further while watching them get happy with their lives. I was never important in the first place, never meant anything to them. Why stay?

I grab the traveling boxes and everything I’d ever spent a dime on in that house, before pulling it out of the house. He could keep the divorce papers, one way or the other, I’ll get him to sign it without ruining my reputation.

As I walked out of the gates, my phone buzzed. I swiped green,

“Sir?”

“Rayna, have you made up your mind? Remember, I told you I still need you here. Marriage shouldn’t take away your right.”

In that swift moment, I made a decision. One that could change my life forever and make me climb into the highest society in the world.

“You are right, sir. If you permit, I’ll resume on Monday.”

“This is not a joke, right?” He asked sharply, “Okay, the cases are waiting for you. We need your smart brain to unravel them.” He said.

“Noted.”

I turned back one last time as the call ended.

I will be stronger. Better. A million times than them.

XAVIAN VARKOSI flipped the papers as I stepped into the office, slipping into my seat.“Rayna Valecrest.” I muttered under my breath. The name felt…inevitable.Thanksgiving had been tolerable because of her. That, I admitted silently.28 years old, three years married. That was irrelevant. She was..mine.Her husband, Cassian Dray.I threw the papers on the desk and looked at Luke, my personal assistant. “She said she’s a detective.” I said flatly.“She was, before she got married. Three years ago.”“Hmm, so she was lying?” Intriguing.“She went there today though, after being dropped off by her father at the bus stop. If I'm correct, I think Mrs Dray is about–”“Valecrest.” I corrected, tapping my pen on the table. “Her name is Valecrest. Not…whatever her husband claims.” “Mrs Valecrest.” I ignored him, titles were meaningless.“She's about to join the force if I’m correct.”“Getting entangled with such a woman is not advisable, Xav.” Adrian announced as he walked in.“I’ll leav

RAYNA“Is he a crazy guy?” Lysandra whispered behind me.“What do you think?” I asked, “Does it feel like he's a harmless person?”Because to me, every instinct screamed danger. Could this…be the murderer? “Yes. Rayna, I’m so scared I could wet my pants right now.” She shook behind me.I had to protect my younger sister no matter what.“Hmm,” I cleared my throat noisily, “just so you know, harassing us like this in the night can cause you issues. I’m a detective…”Well, almost. Technically. By Monday…He raised his brows one at a time.“Doing this…is going to take you to prison. At least a week.”“I haven't even touched you yet. Harassment?” He scoffed lightly,”Go ahead. Make the call.”He's not scared. Not even a little. People like him technically are the leaders of gangs in prison cells. The cells must feel like a second home to him at this point.“What do you want from us?” I asked, forcing my voice to stay steady. His lips curved in a slow amused smirk, “You.” Me?He wants to

RAYNA“So you aren’t coming for thanksgiving?” Lysandra asked me with wide eyes. She stepped away from the path as she let someone else into the elevator.“I have to come, how else would I explain things to mom and dad?” I asked, shifting my laptop so I could see her better.“But Rayna, are you sure you want to divorce Cassian? I know you know how much you loved him.” She said calmly, her eyes showing all the care in the world. She…was the only one who truly cared. “The love started diminishing the moment he changed after the wedding. It got slower, but when Cassian found out I was pregnant, he was over the moon. I thought he had come back to his right senses, but all of that ended when Ryan died. I had blamed him all that time, but if I had known that the reason for him leaving the house in the first place was Tahlia, I would never have forgiven him.”“You need to find peace. And peace is not found in holding grudges against them.” She said,That’s how Lysandra was. Ever since we we

RAYNA“What?” I blurted, my palms feeling sweaty. Just maybe, I didn’t hear that right for a second.“What do you mean because you called him out?” “You didn’t know?” Taliah looked at me with innocent eyes, before glancing at Cassian. “I was having a very bad stomach pain that day, so I called him out and he rushed to attend to me.” Wait…so that was what Marcelline meant? It’s better to lose a baby than to lose an adult. She wasn’t talking about me…she was talking about Tahlia.“Cassian…tell me she’s lying.” My voice shook. He was my husband. As the father of Ryan, he should at least say something to defend himself, shouldn’t he?“You said you had a pressing issue. Tahlia was the issue?” I asked, tilting my head.“What do you want me to say? Tahlia was so sick that I had to leave quickly. It wasn’t my fault that Ryan crawled out from the room I had kept him.”My body acted before my brain. His cheek reddened as my hand connected with his face.Idiot. How could he say that? It wasn’

Cassian, meanwhile, fed the woman beside him, Taliah Wynnford, smiling I didn’t exist.“Taliah, how does it taste?” He asked, a wide smile on his face. My fingers tightened on my fork. His smile, once reserved for me, hadn’t touched his face in a year and some months. Not since…Ryan.“Mother still has her cooking skills.” She smiled sweetly, glancing at my mother in law. “Of course, you know, I’ve always been the perfect cook.” Marcelline returned, running her hand cutely over Taliah’s hair.“Right, did you taste the cookies mother made last two weeks, Rayna? Cassian said he would give you some.” Kael asked. I glanced at Cassian who wa
