Chapter 4

Author: Durian Lover
During my week-long business trip to Ashmont, I was so busy I could only manage one meal a day.

The moment the trip wrapped up and I turned my phone back on, nearly 100 missed calls and messages popped up.

All of them were from Dwayne.

The latest one read, "I can explain the photography stuff. Please don't make a rash decision, okay?"

I didn't reply.

Yet, when I got back, Dwayne was already waiting outside my apartment.

I walked up to him, opening my mouth to speak, when he suddenly shoved me hard.

My knees slammed into the concrete, and blood immediately began to pour from the wound.

But Dwayne seemed completely oblivious as he ruthlessly said, "Avi is getting cyberbullied. Are you happy now? Is this what you wanted?"

I pulled out my phone. Only then did I realize that after waking up crying last night, I had been unable to tell the dream from reality and had left a comment under Aviana's video. "Did you know he's my boyfriend?"

Because of that, people were starting to accuse Aviana of being a mistress.

Dwayne looked down at me in disappointment. "Avi came from an orphanage. It wasn't easy for her to get to where she is today. Do you really have to ruin her life just to be satisfied? Or do you only feel satisfied when you ruin everyone's mood over a photo?"

His accusations cut fast and deep, like a blunt steel ruler jamming ruthlessly into an unhealed fracture.

The emotions I had spent days suffocating finally erupted.

The moment I spoke, my voice shook violently. "Do you have any idea what these past few days have been like for me?"

Tears spilled over.

No matter how calm and rational I forced myself to be during the day, the nights were different.

Every single night, every memory of Dwayne and Aviana would come crashing down on me like a tidal wave.

Every frame was a shard of broken glass piercing my lungs, making even breathing feel bloody.

Countless times, I had stood on the edge of my hotel balcony, thinking, "Maybe I should just jump."

But Dwayne didn't care. "You caused everything! If you hadn't thrown a tantrum, none of this would have happened. You're just miserable, so you want everyone else to be miserable with you."

Dwayne thought for a moment, then uttered each word coldly, "Who could ever put up with a personality like yours? No wonder your parents abandoned you."

Upon hearing those words, I stood frozen, feeling as though I had been dropped into an ice cellar. The cold was suffocating.

Years ago, Dwayne had asked me, "Could you try not to be so strong all the time? It makes me feel like you don't need me."

I had told him, "I'm an orphan. I only have you."

And Dwayne had comforted me over and over, promising, "I'm your first real family. I'll stay with you forever."

He would never know that those words had become the oxygen tank that kept me alive all these years.

But now, he had smashed it with his own hands and weaponized it just to protect Aviana.

Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Dwayne opened the door.

Aviana was standing there, her eyes swollen and red. "Kathie, if it makes you feel any better, you can do whatever you want to me."

Dwayne wrapped his arms around her protectively and said gently, "I won't let anyone hurt you."

He slammed the apartment door shut behind them as they left.

Silence reclaimed the room. It was so quiet that I couldn't help but realize that when a heart shattered completely, it didn't make a sound.

Dwayne moved fast. He put out a statement online.

"Ms. Aviana Reed and I fell in love seven years ago today. We're each other's first loves. That certain someone is just trying to stir up drama for attention."

Attached was a Polaroid of him and Aviana locked in an embrace. The timestamp showed it was taken seven years ago, on this exact date.

I remembered that day. I had begged him to celebrate our first anniversary. He had told me he was too busy and didn't have the time.

The comment section went wild, throwing its full support behind the happy couple.

It didn't take long for people to dox me. They called me malicious, said I deserved to be an orphan, and even wished I'd get hit by a car.

I shut off my phone and wrapped my arms around myself.

I told myself, "It's fine, Kathleen. You still have your job. You can still get promoted. You can build a home for yourself."

Then, my phone rang sharply. "Get to the office right now."

The sudden shift in conversation caught Dwayne completely off guard. "What?"I looked him dead in the eye. "We dated for seven years, Dwayne. Did you know that I don't eat baked beans?"He went silent for a moment, then replied defensively, "So what if I didn't? It's a minor detail. Even if I didn't notice before, I can just pay more attention from now on."I let out a soft chuckle. I was laughing at myself for loving someone like him."To you, taking photos of other women is a minor thing, and my not eating baked beans is a minor thing. But that's not how I see it."I glanced over at Alfie, who was waiting a short distance away.During dinner earlier, the moment he found out I didn't eat baked beans, he had immediately gone out of his way to instruct the waiter."You call it a minor thing, but why is it that a man I barely know can remember it effortlessly, while you, my boyfriend, never could?"In seven whole years, Dwayne had never cared to remember. To him, it didn't matter

"Kathleen."When I looked up, I saw Dwayne stepping out from the shadows. His clothes were wrinkled, and his face was pale.He stared straight at me. "I've been waiting for you all afternoon."Alfie, who was about to get into his car, immediately moved to shield me behind his back when he saw Dwayne. But I smiled and shook my head. "It's okay. Let me handle this."This was between Dwayne and me. I didn't want to drag an innocent bystander into it. Besides, I didn't want to rely on someone else for something so trivial. The next second, I caught myself. It turned out that in my mind, whatever happened between Dwayne and me had already become a trivial matter.Dwayne's eyes were bloodshot, but his voice was thick with resentment. "What exactly did I do so wrong that you're doing this to me?"I looked at him. "Dwayne, do you really not know?"Or was he just too afraid to think about it? Too afraid that if he did, he would realize he had brought all of this on himself, and he woul

I looked up at Alfie. He was hot, fit, and wealthy—exactly the kind of man most people would fall for instantly. But I still shook my head. "I don't feel the same way."To many, love at first sight was the ultimate romance. But growing up with a deep-seated lack of security had made me inherently cautious. Even with Dwayne, I had harbored a silent crush for an entire year, making absolutely sure he was the one before I ever found the courage to tell him how I felt."I don't know why you fell for me," I said.Alfie opened his mouth to explain, but I cut him off, saying, "And honestly, I don't want to know."He blinked, looking suddenly downcast and vulnerable. But I didn't let myself soften. In relationships, being overly soft-hearted was a fatal flaw.Alfie thought it over for a moment and asked, "Do you think I'm moving too fast?"I nodded. "I'm sorry, but I hope that if someone ever falls for me, it won't be because he's driven by hormones or swept up in a passing moment. I w

My eyes widened in shock. In my memory, Dwayne had always been aloof and fiercely proud. He used to say that no one in the world was worth getting into a physical fight over.If this had happened in the past, I might have been deeply moved or incredibly worried. But right now, I just felt pure irritation."Dwayne Norton, have you lost your mind?"Alfie took the hit full-on. He wiped a smear of blood from the corner of his mouth, let out a cold laugh, and lunged right back.Neither man backed down, and the scene instantly spiraled out of control. When trying to yell over them failed, I watched them for a few seconds, turned on my heel, and walked away.Behind me, both of them snapped out of it and stopped fighting almost immediately.Dwayne gasped for air. "Kathie!"I stopped. Then, I turned around and started walking back toward him.As I closed the distance, Dwayne's eyes grew brighter and brighter. He even threw a triumphant glare in Alfie's direction.Alfie, on the other

When I headed out the door the next day, I was wearing a newly bought floral dress. It was a bold, vibrant shade of orange-red.The sales lady at the boutique had told me it made my smooth skin pop and look incredibly radiant.I didn't know if she was telling the truth, but I didn't care.Years ago, Dwayne had glanced at my closet full of colorful clothes and scoffed. "Such cheap taste."So, in an effort to match his supposedly high-end aesthetic, I replaced my entire wardrobe with nothing but black, white, and gray.Back then, I chased after Dwayne as if he were my personal stream of light. But as I looked back now, he wasn't a light at all. He was a fire—the kind that would burn away my identity. This time around, I didn't want to live by anyone else's standard. I was done doubting and diminishing myself over other people's opinions. Even if my taste was cheap, and even if it didn't look perfect, it was mine.Just then, I received a text from Alfie. "Almost there. Take your ti

When the elevator doors slid open, I noticed a figure standing right outside my apartment door, radiating pure malice and resentment. The man looked like a spurned husband. It was Dwayne. I had no idea how he had managed to track down this address. His gaze was dark and stormy. "Who was that man who just dropped you off?"I looked at him flatly. "None of your business."Dwayne let out a sharp, angry laugh. "None of my business?"He ran his tongue over his back teeth, closing the distance between us step by step. "You vanished into thin air, ghosted me, and then showed up acting cozy with another guy…"When he spoke again, his voice was heavy with intimidation. "And you have the nerve to tell me it's none of my business? Have you forgotten that you're my girlfriend? Hmm?"I let out a bitter laugh. "Have you forgotten that we broke up?"A flash of genuine confusion crossed Dwayne's face.I scoffed inwardly. He hadn't taken a single word I'd said seriously.Realizing he was tec
