"I think they must be taking them as slaves when they try to leave." she suggested one night.
"What would the pack need slaves for?" I asked
"Maybe they have a mine somewhere and they're making them work in the mine." she replied brushing out her bob cut.
"A bunch of young female miners?"
Dani shrugged, "Or maybe they're just sending them into the defence force to fight in the war. Putting them on the front line like a distraction."
This didn't strike me as very likely either.
"I have family fighting there," I didn't tell her why my brothers had to go, "Maybe sending those pretty miners into combat will help keep them safe," I said saracasticaly.
"It could be for unethical scientific testing, what if they're doing horrible experiments on them," she retorted.
"Who? The Alpha?" I thought of my stunning future mate and shook my head. Sounds like something one of his slimey friends might do, Victor or Boison, but not the Alpha. I knew he would do anything to protect his pack and I imagined him fighting off evil scientists to protect our puppies. We would have the cutest puppies together.
"You know what? You know what might be connected? That prophecy we hear about. Remember the one that the witch aparently foretold. If we could figure out the prophecy I bet we could figure out these games," I said remembering what the servants had been whispering about on our first night. Dani looked as happy about this idea as I had ever seen her.
"But how would we find out the prophecy?" she asked.
"Well we know some of the servants know something so we could start there. I bet they wrote it down somewhere."
Dani had a mischevious gleem in her eye.
"I'll talk to the servants," she said.
I went for a run through the forest that afternoon. Within the confines of the Alpha's mansion I was surrounded by luxury, but I just couldn't shake the constant feeling that someone was watching me all the time. I really needed some time to myself to run as fast as I could through the brisk November air and howl and feel free.
Through the bare branches of the trees I spotted a buck. He looked a little skinny and weak for a buck, in a way he was the perfect prey. I stalked him slowly inching closer. Wolves rarely hunt alone so it takes some changing of traditional techniques to pull it off. I climbed my way into a boulder giving me a height advantage and before the poor thing had time to run I had leapt onto his back. Delicious blood filled my mouth and I ripped hungrily into his flesh. The complex meals the cooks were making us every night were good, but they just can't compare with having your meal raw and fresh. I had all I could eat and left the remains behind for the vultures. It seemed rude to drag a half eaten carrcass through the Alpha's well manicured gardens. Even though it should be expected, we are all carnivores after all.
I was feeling a good bit more satisfied and relaxed when I returned to my cabin as they late afternoon sun lowered itself in the gray sky. I heard noise from within the cabin and froze. Had Dani spoken too freely and been caught? Are we in trouble? I stood on my hind legs and put my front paws against the window sill to peak inside.
Dani was inside naked talking to another werewolf in human form that I recognized at someone who worked here. He had messy dark hair, bronze skin, and a well muscled body that strained against the bonds where Dani had tied him up and leaned him against the wall.
Oh no, she had gotten herself in too deep this time. I rushed to the door and closed and locked it behind me so nobody could enter and see the trouble we had got ourselves in.
She lead me up to my room and promised that someone would come a long with my things later. My new room was a lot more private than the first. It was on the second story and I had a big window that overlooked the wall and where the forest met the grass. The window was framed by sheer lacey curtains. I also had a small emerald couch and a coffee table where a vase of maroon roses set. Hanging above the mantel over the fireplace was my favorite room improvement, a portrait of the Alpha. His intense eyes seemed to pierce me and draw me in to the painting as easily as they could in real life. I gently touched one finger to his painted cheek, but it had none of his warmth I crave so much.A scream wrung out through the air and I ran back to my window. Out on the lawn I saw Dani struggling to break free of the grip of the greasy vampire I saw running the front gate on my first day. She kicked and punched futilely at his face but it didn't stop his fangs from sinking into the skin of her sto
The kitchens were a little bit quieter now that most of our number had been sent home, but there were still pack members and servants bustling around. I collapsed into a seat and lay my head into my hands and breathe. "She lives!" Jules exclaims taking a seat right next to me, "I'll go grab you some food, sit tight." I mumble a thanks. The cool wood of the table feels solid and refreshing against my cheek. She's right, I should celebrate being alive, but something was holding me back. What do you call it when you have survivors guilt except you were the one who killed the person who didn't survive? Regular guilt? Jules slammed a bowl of stew in front of me."Eat up!" "yum." I reply, not matching her enthusiasm. "I can't believe the three of us all made to the last seven." I thought for a moment of poor Dani, but she wanted to go home since day one. We were all getting what we wanted, I guess.I took a bite of meat and potatoes and chewed. I was hungry, but my stomach hadn't quite
beep...beep...beep...beep...beep...beepI could feel that I was laying on a bed and that I was slightly nauseous. Not a great start. I opened my eyes and blinked as I adjusted to the light. Immediately I met that dark stare of the man lounging on the bed across the room from me. I would have jumped but the air felt heavy and my body was dazed as if my blood had turned to warm soup. Instead I just looked back. My neck and shoulder was too heavily bandaged for me to turn my head in any other direction. It was Victor on the bad across from me but he didn't seem to be wounded at all, just relaxing and patiently studying me. Like he was waiting for something from me. I dropped my gaze to my arms where tubes of various liquids fed into my arms. That might explain the hazy feeling over my body and brain. My mouth was dry and I cleared my throat."Been waiting long?" I asked. He shrugged as of if he couldn't be quite sure of the difference between a long period of time and a short one."The
A couple minutes into my fight I realized that I was wrong. It wasn't softness in Trina pale blue eyes it was coldness and indifference. My cheek was bleeding and I felt as though she had broken several of my ribs, but I was still standing. Trina wasn't looking too good either, patches of fur had been ripped out by my teeth and a black eye was beginning to form though she managed to keep the swollen lid open. I growled as we once again prowled in a circle and I dodged another swipe at my face. I tried to scan the yard for anything I could use to gain an upper hand, remembering the thrown rock from earlier. It must have gotten knocked from the well manicured rock and cactus garden some twenty feet behind me. It wouldn't be easy to get over there though as I couldn't risk turning my back on my opponent. I thought briefly of my brothers and the acts of violence they are forced into every day because of this family. What violence wouldn't I commit if it meant my only chance to save them?
Finally the day had arrived where everyone was at least adequately dressed for a challenge. Then again, once in wolf form we are all dressed the same. It was another beautiful gray morning. A light fog covered the dewy grass where soon there would be an all out brawl. I looked around and saw even Oakley looked nervous about what was to come. "This is the challenge you have all been waiting for!" the Luna Mother announced to the group of about 14 remaining challengers. Soon to be seven. They shuffled nervously in place. "Now we would greatly regret having to put any one of you in the ground tonight so please do us all a favor and abstain from killing blows whenever possible." She announced. Very comforting. "Remember a Luna must be fierce and strong and might have to fight people off to protect her pack," her eyes met mine for a moment, "We are hoping to see that perseverance and determination from you all today. Each of you will be assigned a partner and depending on what happens h
