Chapter 16

"Oh, Elma. You're back," Dani said when she heard the door click shut, her eyes never leaving the captive she had tied up on the floor. She crouched on the ground holding a dagger completely naked. Not that the nakedness was the unusual part about this scene before me. Werewolves aren't uncomfortable around nudety.

"Dani. What's happening here?" I asked staring at the man squirming on the floor.

"I'm questioning one of the employees, like we talked about. It was quite easy to lure him in here, he wanted me so bad," she turned to the man and pressed the blade against the dark stuble of his throat. He moaned against the gag in his mouth.

"Not like this," I exclaimed, "I meant in a normal casual friendly way!"

"Oh I've been friendlier to him than he deserves," Dani replied and she pulled the gag from his mouth with the tip of her knife.

"I don't know the prophecy," he gasped through heavy breaths. Dani clicked her tongue.

"Yes you do, honey. Tell me what you know about it."

"I don't!" he panted and threw himself forward, but his restraints caused him just to fall onto his shoulder on the floor. We both watched him for a moment as the his biceps strained to get free and the veins in his neck and forearms bulged.

Dani pushed him over onto his back with her foot and he looked up at her with wide honey colored eyes full of fear...and something else. Dani stepped over his helpless body and lowered herself onto his lap. He squeezed his eyes closed and sighed.

"I do know something. I heard about the prophecy" he said in a low voice full of desperation.

"Oh and what's that," Dani coaxed settling herself comfortably on his hips.

"The-the witch she gave us the prophecy and it's why-why the vampires are here," he whimpered his eyes following Dani's dagger as she slowly trailed it down his chest following the line of hair to below his bellybutton.

"and?"

"and I don't know exactly what it is but BUT it's why the Alpha demanded all of the female wolves with mixed fur should attend. The prophecy claims that one of them will be the vampire queen." He bucked his hips.

"Good boy," Dani encouraged and he moaned, "and all the wolves that the vampires don't want?"

"I don't know I don't know," he said his eyes filling with tears. I worried how we could possibly end this interaction. We couldn't let him go. He was like a caged predator with all the strength to overpower us if we dated to give him the chance. His hands flexed in there position tied behind his back. I'm sure he was imagining having his hands free and around Dani's waist. How good and soft her skin would feel beneath his finger tips.

"shh shhh It's ok, You're ok," Dani soothed running a hand through his hair and then pulling his head up by his hard so she could look him in his sad brown eyes.

Dani turned to look at me where I stood frozen to the floor.

"You heard what he said about the prophecy. Now if you could step out I can handle this from here. You know how it is, being in heat." I nodded still stunned and I heard the man on the ground moan as stepped out into the cool night air. I had managed to walk half way to the pavilion in a daze before I occurred to me. At any point he could have shifted into a werewolf and broken his bonds. I turned back for a moment thinking to warn Dani of the impending danger but the comforting glow in the windows calmed me. They were both exactly where they wanted to be.

She lead me up to my room and promised that someone would come a long with my things later. My new room was a lot more private than the first. It was on the second story and I had a big window that overlooked the wall and where the forest met the grass. The window was framed by sheer lacey curtains. I also had a small emerald couch and a coffee table where a vase of maroon roses set. Hanging above the mantel over the fireplace was my favorite room improvement, a portrait of the Alpha. His intense eyes seemed to pierce me and draw me in to the painting as easily as they could in real life. I gently touched one finger to his painted cheek, but it had none of his warmth I crave so much.A scream wrung out through the air and I ran back to my window. Out on the lawn I saw Dani struggling to break free of the grip of the greasy vampire I saw running the front gate on my first day. She kicked and punched futilely at his face but it didn't stop his fangs from sinking into the skin of her sto

The kitchens were a little bit quieter now that most of our number had been sent home, but there were still pack members and servants bustling around. I collapsed into a seat and lay my head into my hands and breathe. "She lives!" Jules exclaims taking a seat right next to me, "I'll go grab you some food, sit tight." I mumble a thanks. The cool wood of the table feels solid and refreshing against my cheek. She's right, I should celebrate being alive, but something was holding me back. What do you call it when you have survivors guilt except you were the one who killed the person who didn't survive? Regular guilt? Jules slammed a bowl of stew in front of me."Eat up!" "yum." I reply, not matching her enthusiasm. "I can't believe the three of us all made to the last seven." I thought for a moment of poor Dani, but she wanted to go home since day one. We were all getting what we wanted, I guess.I took a bite of meat and potatoes and chewed. I was hungry, but my stomach hadn't quite

beep...beep...beep...beep...beep...beepI could feel that I was laying on a bed and that I was slightly nauseous. Not a great start. I opened my eyes and blinked as I adjusted to the light. Immediately I met that dark stare of the man lounging on the bed across the room from me. I would have jumped but the air felt heavy and my body was dazed as if my blood had turned to warm soup. Instead I just looked back. My neck and shoulder was too heavily bandaged for me to turn my head in any other direction. It was Victor on the bad across from me but he didn't seem to be wounded at all, just relaxing and patiently studying me. Like he was waiting for something from me. I dropped my gaze to my arms where tubes of various liquids fed into my arms. That might explain the hazy feeling over my body and brain. My mouth was dry and I cleared my throat."Been waiting long?" I asked. He shrugged as of if he couldn't be quite sure of the difference between a long period of time and a short one."The

A couple minutes into my fight I realized that I was wrong. It wasn't softness in Trina pale blue eyes it was coldness and indifference. My cheek was bleeding and I felt as though she had broken several of my ribs, but I was still standing. Trina wasn't looking too good either, patches of fur had been ripped out by my teeth and a black eye was beginning to form though she managed to keep the swollen lid open. I growled as we once again prowled in a circle and I dodged another swipe at my face. I tried to scan the yard for anything I could use to gain an upper hand, remembering the thrown rock from earlier. It must have gotten knocked from the well manicured rock and cactus garden some twenty feet behind me. It wouldn't be easy to get over there though as I couldn't risk turning my back on my opponent. I thought briefly of my brothers and the acts of violence they are forced into every day because of this family. What violence wouldn't I commit if it meant my only chance to save them?

Finally the day had arrived where everyone was at least adequately dressed for a challenge. Then again, once in wolf form we are all dressed the same. It was another beautiful gray morning. A light fog covered the dewy grass where soon there would be an all out brawl. I looked around and saw even Oakley looked nervous about what was to come. "This is the challenge you have all been waiting for!" the Luna Mother announced to the group of about 14 remaining challengers. Soon to be seven. They shuffled nervously in place. "Now we would greatly regret having to put any one of you in the ground tonight so please do us all a favor and abstain from killing blows whenever possible." She announced. Very comforting. "Remember a Luna must be fierce and strong and might have to fight people off to protect her pack," her eyes met mine for a moment, "We are hoping to see that perseverance and determination from you all today. Each of you will be assigned a partner and depending on what happens h
