----A Letter my Mother Gave me for my Journey----

My Only Daughter,

I know you are reluctant, but I am positive deep in my heart that you are destined to be the next Luna and that the spirits of the moon are with you and will favor you. All that aside here are is some advice from your mother that I want you to remember while you are facing challenges.

A Luna is always polite.

A Luna will practice humility.

A Luna has unlimited patience.

A Luna will never give up.

A Luna is unfalteringly loyal.

And A Luna will do whatever it takes.

I am sure you will heed my words and hold them close to your heart as you did every day when I was with you. You are on your own now, but don't forget that your family is all depending on you and without your success will likely perish. Prove that I have raised you right. Be good and return when you are Luna.

Always,

Your Mother.

-------------

I folded her letter and slipped it into my pocket. I wore simple black pants that hugged my figure and a modest blouse with puffy sleeves that I felt like I could move in. No fancy ballgowns for today, a Luna must practice humility and I needed to be prepared for anything that could be our first challenge. After a hearty mutton breakfast burrito I successfully convinced Dandilion to train in combat with me. I quickly discovered that she was right to be worried. I might be untrained and my techniques in refined, but she was downright clumsy and with bad instincts to boot.

Her paw tapped the training mat signaling she was surrendering for the fifth time. I released her neck from my fanged jaws. Out of breath she shifted back into her human form and I followed suit and put my clothes back on.

"I'd give you some pointers during the match if only we could use mind speech with each other, Dani" I lamented that we weren't from the same pack. What would a humble Luna do in this situation? The least I could do was try not to show off.

"I um think we are both improving. Let's call it a day." I said and we headed towards the meeting place for our first challenge. I wish I had time to stop by the kitchens for a bite to eat before this, but I'll just have to push through. Maybe it will be a lunch eating challenge?

"Welcome all to our first challenge!" the Luna mother announced to the waiting group of anxoius wolves dressed in their finest.

"There are many duties and responsibilities that a Luna has to take accountability for, but I know one of the most important ones for me was raising strong pups that will one day grow up to be the Alpha. This should not be taken lightly and can make or break the future of an entire pack. That is why today we will see how you handle the preassures and nuances of pup care. Open the doors!"

To servants opened the big wooden double doors of the mansion and all the pups of the entire pack burst forth onto the lawn yipping and yapping.

"It's one of their birthdays!" the Luna mother shouted over the ruckus, "Find out who and facilitate the cake and a game of pin the tail on the wolf! We'll be watching!"

I had never realized how much using pack speech to talk into each others minds until I was faces with thirty wolf pups who would not shift into human for to speak to me and acted as though they couldn't listen either. Rayven seemed to have a way with them and was making an attempt to pass out slices of cake while Oakly was far for involved in tripping over her own dress and trying to pull pups away from grabbing on to her jewelry. I thought I had finally explained the game of pin the tail on the wolf until the second pup got blindfolded and decided to book it across the yard with the paper tail in his mouth.

"I'll watch the pups over here if you go get that tail back," rushed a wolf I recently met to be Jules. She hitched up her own dress that was preventing her from moving efficiently and ran over to scold a pup who bit his friend. Being the only suitor wearing anything close to activewear besides Dani, I took off after the mischeivous little guy.

"Come back, Eli! You're supposed to pin it on the picture!" I shouted after him uselessly.

I ran as fast as my pants would let me, but I soon realized that I would have to shift if I ever wanted a chance at catching him. Barking as if this was some silly game we were both playing he began heading towards the woods, discarding the paper tail from the other game in disinterest.

"Stop!" I yelled before shifting finally into my calico wolf and bounding after him at twice the speed leaving my clothes in shreds on the grass. I was so close now inches from catching his scruff in my mouth and bringing him back when Eli took a sharp turn and SMACK. I ran staight into a person I hadn't seen standing off away from everyone else. Eli laugh barked as he scurried through his legs and headed back towards the party leaving me to handle this awkwardness alone. I regained my footing and looked up to meet a pair of cold dark eyes staring back down at me in amusement.

Before I could process what I was doing I had pushed him away so hard that my chair toppled over spilling me out onto the floor. The crash immediately brought all attention onto us and I could feel my face heating with embarrassment. I looked up at the offending wolf and saw blood trickling down his shoulders. My hands must have taken the form of razor sharp claws as I pushed him away in anger, easily tearing through his skin. I didn't know what to do but I couldn't stay here on the floor with everyone's eyes on me. A waitress held out her hand to me and I took it, rising to my feet. "Quick thinking, ma'am," she said looking at me with clever grey eyes, "He almost bit you.""Yes. Thank you," I said breathlessly. I think my heart might beat straight out of my chest. "She attacked me!" Boison exclaimed noticing the blood dripping down his arm and putting his hand over it to staunch the bleeding. "Relax," said another commanding voice. All heads swiveled over to the Vampire King, "It'

I almost wish I hadn't worn my new blue dress this afternoon because I can't possibly one up it at dinner. In lue of that I went with a long skin thight black dress I deemed both elegant and sexy. Dani wore blue. In fact, I've never seen her wear the cheerfull yellow that her name suggests. We walked together to the door of the mansion where a guard stood at attention to greet us. The wolves in waiting pulled open the heavy doors for us and the guard announced loudly,"From Cabin B, Elma and Dandilion!"A massive dining table had been brought out turning the throne room into a very fancy dining room. Dani and I were lead to our seats where I quickly scanned the other particapants at the table. The first thing I noticed was that I had the great misfortune of being sat directly next to the Alpha's second cousin. His place tag read the name Boison. I also noticed Oakly had not yet been sent home. Damn. Luckily Rayven and Jules were still in attendence along with another seven wolves who

"The dress looks perfect on you," the Alpha remarked, "I hope you don't mind me saying that I have amazing taste." I chuckled a little. "You are too generous, Alpha. You have spoiled me." "I'd like all my guests to feel that way." I frowned, I didn't want to talk about all those other wolves fighting for his affection. "Your grandparents. They were... charming. An intriguing bunch, they carry much wisdom.""Intriguing is the word for it alright. They'd be more charming if they stopped bickering all the time. If you can put up with them then you can put up with anything." "I imagine they all used to be very different wolves once.""You would be correct. Grandfather Walter used to be the Alpha once, he's the one who can't speak,"I nodded for him to continue. "His time was one of great unrest as I've heard it told. One day when he was out on a hunt with only a few of his closest warriors he was ambushed and surrounded by the enemy. He knew they would be able to fight them all off

Another grandparent type wolf stood at the door, her blank eyes a ghostly white. I stood up quickly, but the wolf across from me looked a little disappointed at the interruption. "We are ready for you now," she croaked."Thankyou ma'am," I said and left the room without another glance at the Alpha's treacherous second cousin. I followed my blind guide a couple more yards down the hall until we entered a slightly bigger office with a table in it not unlike a conference room. How the blind wolf knew this was the right place was beyond my understanding. The blind wolf and I took our seats at the table where three other old wolves sat already. These must be the all of the Alpha's grandparents. "Introduce yourself she-wolf," demanded the elder that had led Rayven inside earlier."My name is Elma," I stated shortly. Customarily a wolf would follow this with a family name or pack name, but I decided to keep mine short. A moment of silence."What did she say?" asked one of the wolves who in

I have a lot of respect for elderly wolves for their wisdom and experience, but damn, they are not fast. It feels like the first wolf who got called in for an interview with the Alpha's grandparents started hours ago but we are still only a couple wolves in with what must be twenty more to go. I sat on a bench kicking my feet and watching varius servants hurry by. I might rather be one of them right now because at least I would have something to do besides sit here in my growing pool of stress."They must have a lot to say in there." Rayven commented from beside me, "That's good because we'll each get our fair shot and won't be hurried out or anything.""What do you think they're talking about?" I asked absentmindedly. I hoped none of the first suitors chosen do so well that I am hardly given time of day."Probably the war? What else to elderly folks talk about? The war or other old wolves." "Shush, don't call them old. We're trying to make a good impression here." I shook my head di

The next two days passed in a blur as the she-wolves recovered from the first challenge. Notably we were down a few in number who hadn't fared well in the birthday party challenge and even one wolf who found her fated mate in a palace servant and they had reportedly ran away together. Good for them. I spent my days practicing, training, and trying to learn everything I could about pack politics and the Alpha I sought to impress. He had a charming personality and when he wasn't talking and checking in with all of people living on his grounds he liked song and dance. He kept his mother close along with the strange gentleman I had smashed into at the first challenge. I hoped I wouldn't have to spend much time with that unsavory character if I won the title of Luna. I had almost forgotten about the Alpha's previous promise until one day when I discovered a package laying on my bedspread. "Did you put this here?" I asked Dandilion. My roommate had been particularly dreamy and lost in her
