LOGIN"You really think you can seduce the Alpha looking like that?" The mischievous grey wolf beside me whispered. He was trying to make me give up, but I had to come out the victor in these games for my pack and my family. He slowly took one clawed finger and slipped the strap of my silk burgundy floor length gown off my shoulder in front of the whole table of wolf royalty. "That's a little more like it," He coaxed, "Look at him with all of those other attractive wolves to choose from. You'll never catch his attention like this." I stared at the end of the table where the Alpha sat. He was dark of hair and broad of chest and always had a smile and was willing to lend a paw to a wolf in need. He was laughing at something the stunning blonde she-wolf beside him had said and that cheerful couple drew a sharp contrast from the unknown man on his other side. I couldn't even be sure that man was a wolf at all, he was pale and lean but his eyes were dark, cold and...and never seemed to leave my face. "Just give up the games now," the grey wolf continues, "fall into my arms instead I can take care of you just as well as some fancy Alpha can. Close your eyes, you won't even notice the difference." I felt his tongue from my collar bone to my jaw.
View MoreA peircing femine howl rang through the market bringing all the villagers in my pack to a dead stop. I nearly dropped the dead rabbit I was bartering for to provide my family with dinner tonight. All eyes were fixed on the lady standing in the middle of the market square. Her red hair indicated that she was a red wolf and her modest coral colored dress that went to her mid-thigh with gold trimmings and a high collar indicated that she was a royal messanger. Once she was satisfied that she had everyone's attention she began.
"Here ye, Here Ye," she announced shrilly, "The royal palace will be hosting an official Wolf Games the victor will win the title of Luna, a marraige to our Alpha, Alpha Berion the Loyal, and all the privledges that come along it."
This time I did drop the rabbit. The vender selling me his hunt complained but I barely heard him. I was too transfixed by the red wolf and what she might say next.
"All eligible female wolves are encouraged to attend and enjoy the royal hospitality of the Fang Gibbous pack." Excited whispers filled the crowd, but the messanger was not done yet. She seemed to be staring right at me as she finished message with one last devastating condition.
"All female wolves of mixed color are required to attend on threat of death."
I immediately broke eye contact and lowered my eyes to the floor. Threat of death? I've never heard of an Alpha needing to threaten anything to get enough suitors to join the games before. Especially not Alpha Berion. Even as far away as my home, the Waxing Tail pack, I had heard tell of his reputation. He was strong and handsome, a black wolf I think, or maybe a dark brown. He was known for being brave and feircely loyal, but also dripping with charisma. He can't be struggling with getting attention from female wolves so it surprises me that he would host a Wolf Game at all to pick his Luna. And what of his fated mate? Did he have one and planned on seeing her on the side because he didn't think she would be a good Luna. Impossible they don't call him the Loyal for nothing. I left the rabbit forgotten on the tiled ground of the market square and rushed home to bring the news to my parents.
My father used to be a great wolf artisan so though our home lay a ways from the market it was charming and well built. I burst through the door in a frenzy.
"Calm yourself. What is it?" I heard my mother speak into my mind using pack speech. I heeded her command and shifted into my human form to deliver the news she had missed. She barely let me finish before she was coming up with a plan.
"The new Luna? and of a Gibbous pack no less. This could change our lives." She spared a glance out the window at my 10 year old brother in playing outside with the other pups. My other two brothers had been sent to war, a price my family had to pay for the treason commiteed by my father. If only that fool could have stuck to hunting and weaving his tapestries my whole family might be here right now, but if I could become a Luna I would have the power to bring my brothers home from the war and stop my littlest brother from ever being sent. I hated to imagine him out there on the border where pine forest meets the desert fighting tooth and nail with enemy coyotes where I could no longer ensure his safety like I had been doing ever since our older brothers were sent.
"You have to go, Elma," my mother insisted, "And do anything you have to do if it means you can bring my sons home."
"I know, mother." I bowed my head in sadness at the mention of my brothers.
"It doesn't matter that you would be giving up your chance at a fated mate. I trusted fate with my mate and all it brought me was pain and suffering. Pack leaders make their own fate and so must you if you want to become one of them. If you must, close your eyes and imagine that you have been fated to be together as the Alpha has his way with you. You may not be very strong or fierce or exceptionally wise, but you have been clever at times and you can look half decent when you want to. Best of all you don't stir up trouble like your father and you always do as you're told." my mother elaborated as she turned from the bone broth she was stirring over our stove to look at me sternly. It didn't sound like the makings of a Luna to me, but my mother knew best.
"I will mother." I had always been the obedient daughter ever since my father tore our life into pieces with his betrayal. I wish I could ask him why he did it, but he ran like a coward and no wolf has seen him for six years. She may come off as insensative and demanding at times, but I knew my mother was just doing the best she could with everything she had on her plate. I looked over at a torn portrait that hung on the wall as a reminder. The face had been scrached out years ago, but I remembered my father's face just the same as if it had been yesterday when he deserted us forever. I watched from my bedroom window as he disapeared into the night and I heard my mothers scream when the warriors arrived the next day to bring her the news. I wouldn't let his actions define me.
It didn't matter what my mother said this time my fate had already been decided by another.
"There's one last part of this announcement you have to hear," I told my mother lifting my head and brushing my hair out of my face. My calico red, white, and black hair.
I kept quiet at dinner and tried not even to meet the elf's eyes, just in case. That combined with the how looking at the vampire across from me made my stomach turn, I barely looked up from my food when I didn't have to. It was a pasta with more vegtables than I was used to. We must be catering this meal to the elves taste. I risked a quick glance at the plate across from mine. The Vampire king hadn't touched his food at all, but he didn't seem to mind whatever he was drinking from his glass. No, it couldn't be. My appetite vanished at the thought of him drinking blood at the table. Surely that isn't allowed and he's just fond of wine. Nevertheless I soon found reason to excuse myself to get some fresh air. Even in the winter, I prefered the outdoors to the indoors and the night air on the patio settled my nerves. A winter hush lay over the grounds where most living things were hibranating, but the silence was a comfort. Only the whispers of pasing servants and the crunch of their f
The next day every wolf was absolutely buzzing with excitement. The emissary from the elves had finally arrived. I watched in awe from an upper window as the small group entered the through the stone wall. Autumn had abandoned me and now the air had a bitter cold bite that seemed to not touch the elves as they made their arrival. Snow flurries clouded the air and landed in the fur of the guards standing watch but melted on the thin garments worn by our visitors. A servant noticed me as they rushed down the hall,"C'mon everyone must go down to greet our guests. Hurry!"he called as he turned down the stairs. As much as I hated facing the cold I desperately wanted a good look at an elf. I pulled on my brown wool coat and followed the others outside into the cold. My breath steamed in the morning air and the frosty grass crunched beneath my boots. I tried not to push to the front of the crowd as five elves slowly processed up the stone path towards the huge wooden doors. The Alpha stoo
I spent the next two days resting in bed. It was necessary for me to recover and to stop having such vivid halucinations and delusions as I seemed to have regarding the manner of Dandilions departure. I'm sure I would get a letter from her any day now. Still Rayven would show up at my door everyday and convince me to take a walk through the gardens with her to get some much needed sunlight. I found her constant chatter about the weather and what the next challenge might be comforting and when the day came for my bangages to be removed, I know longer felt shakey and paranoid. I sat stiffly on the crinkley paper of the med room bed as a gentle nurse unwrapped my shoulder and collarbone. The sterile soapy smell of the room brought back uncomfortable feelings that must be memories from when I was unconscious. "It's not so bad" the nurse said softly.I looked down at my prevoiusly mauled shoulder. She was right, my werewolf healing factor had done it's work. Some jagged lines of puckered
She lead me up to my room and promised that someone would come a long with my things later. My new room was a lot more private than the first. It was on the second story and I had a big window that overlooked the wall and where the forest met the grass. The window was framed by sheer lacey curtains. I also had a small emerald couch and a coffee table where a vase of maroon roses set. Hanging above the mantel over the fireplace was my favorite room improvement, a portrait of the Alpha. His intense eyes seemed to pierce me and draw me in to the painting as easily as they could in real life. I gently touched one finger to his painted cheek, but it had none of his warmth I crave so much.A scream wrung out through the air and I ran back to my window. Out on the lawn I saw Dani struggling to break free of the grip of the greasy vampire I saw running the front gate on my first day. She kicked and punched futilely at his face but it didn't stop his fangs from sinking into the skin of her sto
