MasukThe sound of laughter forced Elara out of sleep. She had replayed the whole interaction in her head multiple times but it made no sense.
How could he throw away three years in one night?
This was the same man who had chased her for years. When they finally started dating, he treated her like a queen.
He was always so thoughtful and romantic. She remembered the cold look in his eyes at the party and the mean way he spoke to her. Her Alexander would never talk to her like that. He would never act that way, and he would definitely never leave her for her best friend.
Elara had cried herself to sleep every night since the party. On the first day, she sat by her phone and waited. She was sure he would call to say it was all a big mistake. But he never did.
For the next few days, she did the same thing, but there was only silence. Yesterday, she finally tried to call him, but it went straight to voicemail.
She couldn't just sit here anymore. She had to do something. She decided she was going to his office to talk to him face-to-face.
"Maybe he's still in there," she whispered.
She hoped the man she loved was still there somewhere, and that he could explain why he had broken her heart.
Elara walked through the glass doors of Sterling-Apex. Her heart was pounding, but she tried to stay calm. She went straight to the front desk.
Sashi was working. She was the same girl who always let Elara up to see Alex. Usually, Sashi would smile and wave her through, knowing exactly who she was.
"I’m here to see Alexander," Elara said.
Sashi didn’t look up from her computer screen. Her voice was flat. "You can’t see Mr. Sterling without an appointment."
Elara’s eyes widened. She leaned over the desk. "Sashi, it's me. I don’t need an appointment. I’m his girlfriend."
Sashi finally looked up, but she didn't smile. Her eyes were full of pity. She leaned in close and lowered her voice. "You’ve been blacklisted, Miss Smith. I’m really sorry, but I’m just doing my job."
Elara felt like she had been punched. She almost choked on her words. "Blacklisted? Is there anything you can do? Anything at all?"
Sashi shook her head sadly. "No, Miss Smith. I'm so sorry. I can tell Mr. Sterling that you stopped by, but that’s it."
Elara nodded slowly. She felt dizzy. "Thank you," she whispered.
She turned to leave, clutching her chest. Her heart felt like it was trying to jump right out of her body. Every breath hurt.
She was almost at the door when she heard it. A sultry, annoying, and very familiar voice.
"Going somewhere, Elara?"
It was Vivienne.
Elara froze. The sound of that voice made bile rise in her throat. She felt a wave of pure disgust. She didn’t know who she hated more right now: her cheating boyfriend or her fake best friend.
She kept her head down and kept walking. She acted like Vivienne wasn't even there. She couldn't bring herself to look at her.
"Honey," Vivienne called out, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. "Leaving so soon without saying goodbye?"
Elara balled her hands into fists at her sides. Her nails dug into her palms. She didn't say a word; she just walked faster toward the exit. She wanted to get away from the smell of Vivienne's expensive perfume.
But the clicking of heels followed her. Vivienne wasn't letting her go.
"What does she even want?" Elara hissed under her breath.
She reached the heavy glass doors, but Vivienne was right behind her. Elara could feel the woman's smug smile burning into her back.
Vivienne grabbed Elara’s arm, jerking her back. "Look at me when I'm talking to you, bitch," she snapped. "It seems you still don't know your place."
Elara spun around, her eyes flashing with anger. But before she could even open her mouth, Vivienne suddenly threw herself backward. She hit the floor with a loud thud.
"Don't hurt me!" Vivienne shrieked, covering her face as if Elara had just pushed her down.
Elara stood frozen, her jaw dropping. She looked down at Vivienne, who was cowering on the shiny lobby floor. For a split second, Vivienne looked up, and an evil glint glistened in her eyes. She gave Elara a cruel smile that no one else could see.
The lobby went silent. Then, the whispers started. People stopped at the elevators and the front desk, staring at Elara like she was a monster.
'What the fuck is she doing?' Elara asked herself, her head spinning.
"It's not my fault he left you, Lara!" Vivienne sobbed loudly, making sure everyone could hear. "I'm not at fault for his choices! Please, just leave us alone!"
She continued her show, rubbing her arm as if she were in pain. Elara looked around at the crowd. They weren't looking at Vivienne’s lies; they were looking at Elara’s balled fists and her angry face.
"Vivienne, get up," Elara hissed, her face turning bright red from embarrassment and shock. "Stop lying!"
Elara scoffed. She couldn't take one more second of this fake show. She looked around at the terrified faces of the people passing by, and her heart sank to her feet.
People were actually believing it. Some people even took out their phones to record her.
Elara turned to walk away, desperate to escape the cameras, but Vivienne lunged forward and grabbed Elara’s legs. She pinned her in place.
"Please, I'm so sorry!" Vivienne wailed, clinging to Elara’s jeans. "You’re my best friend! I love you!"
Elara looked down in horror. Vivienne was crying fake tears, making Elara look like a violent bully.
"What a monster," one woman whispered, shaking her head.
"Is she really that evil?" another person asked, pointing a phone at Elara's face.
"No wonder the CEO dumped her," a man added loudly. "Look at how she treats people."
Elara felt like she was suffocating.
A handsome young man suddenly stepped into the middle of the crowd.
"Stop recording!" he shouted.
When they didn't listen, he snatched phones right out of people's hands and threw them to the ground. People backed away in shock.
He looked down at Vivienne, who was still clinging to Elara’s legs and sobbing. Without a word, he grabbed Vivienne’s shoulders and firmly pushed her off.
The man turned to Elara. He saw how pale she was and how much she was shaking. He put his arm around her shoulders.
"Let’s go," he said firmly.
He escorted her toward the exit, shielding her.
Elara walked through the restaurant with her heels clicking against the marble floor. Heads turned as she made her way to Rebecca's table. Becky, her fiery red hair friend was practically glowing under the amber lights. She looked as stunning as ever—that "face card" was still the most reliable currency in the city. She leaned back, swirling a martini, looking completely bored while talking to a guy in a suit that cost more than a small car leaned. He seemed desperate for her attention.Elara knew the drill. Becky was a master of the "flirt and fly." She’d give a man just enough hope to buy her a drink, then disappear the moment he started talking about "future plans."Elara cleared her throat. A smile spread across her face as she reached the table.Becky’s eyes snapped up, ignored the man mid-sentence, and lit up like a firework. "Oh, thank God," she mouthed, before standing up to pull Elara into a suffocating hug."About time!" Becky cried, pulling back to look Elara up and dow
Vivienne put on her glasses and scarf. Her security team scooped her away because everything she was saying was unintelligible. She was a mess. Elara and Alistair took the kids and put them into the car. They drove away fast. Elara watched the ice cream shop disappear. She knew this was not over. Vivienne was not the kind of person that let anything go. She rushed the children inside the house."Go upstairs and wash up, babies," Elara said. She gave them each a quick kiss. "Uncle Alistair will be up in a minute to play."Once the kids were gone, the house felt too quiet. Alistair looked at her. "You okay? That was a big risk, Elara.""She talked about my children, Alistair. I won't apologize for that," Elara replied. Her hands were still shaking.Just then, her phone started to vibrate. She looked at the screen. It was an unknown number. She hesitated in answering. "Trouble?" Alistair asked, noticing her face."Probably," she whispered. She took a deep breath and answered waiting f
In the car, Leo broke the silence. "Mummy, that man is really handsome and nice. And he’s rich, too. I think he should be our daddy. He owns the company, right?"Elara choked on her own saliva. She coughed, her face turning red from shock."What man?" Lyra asked, looking curious."Mummy’s boss," Leo responded flatly.Lyra nodded seriously. "I trust your judgment, Leo." She then looked at her mother. "Mummy, what do you think?"Elara couldn't find the words. Her mind was still back in that hallway, reliving the fear of seeing Alex again. Now, her children were giving her a heart attack by suggesting he should be their father. They had no idea he actually was their father. She needed to change the subject fast. She frowned at Leo. "Why did you threaten your caregiver?" she asked sternly.Leo pouted. He turned his head and stared out the window, trying to avoid his mother’s gaze."Leo," she called again, her voice firmer this time."Mummy?" he answered quietly, still looking at the passi
Leo stayed quiet for a moment. He pouted, then finally spoke. "My name is Leo and my sister's name is Lyra. And my mummy..." He stopped for a second. "Can you help me find her? It is her first day at her new job. I want to wish her good luck."Alex felt his heart melt. What a sweet boy, he thought. He knelt down to be at Leo's height."Okay, Leo. Let’s go to the security room," Alex said. "My company has many cameras. We can find your mummy on one of the screens."Alex reached out his arms, and Leo climbed right in. As Alex held the boy, he felt a strange connection to him. He wondered if seeing Elara again was making him feel this way.The truth was, Alex had stayed single all these years. He always hoped he would find Elara again. Now he had found her, but she had run away before he could explain anything. The elevator doors opened, and Elara stepped out with Sashi. Her heart stopped when she saw the scene in front of her.Her son, Leo, was being held by the man who had broken her h
Elara looked at him with angry eyes. She did not back down."First of all, Mr. Sterling, my name is Mrs. Vance," she said. Her voice was like ice. "Do not call me by any other name."The other people in the room looked at each other. They were nervous. They started to pack their bags quickly. They did not want to be in the middle of this fight."Secondly," Elara continued. She crossed her arms over her chest. "If you have something to say, say it right now. I have many appointments today. I do not have time to waste."Alex felt a sting in his heart. He hoped she would be happy to see him, but she was only angry. She was not the same girl he used to know. This woman had no time for him at all."This is private," Alex said. He looked at the last few people in the room. "It is about the future of the company."He lied just so the others would leave. He watched the door close. Finally, they were all alone in the big room. The silence felt heavy."Now," Elara said. She did not sit down. "W
Alexander’s heart nearly jumped out of his chest. He felt like he was seeing a ghost. He stood frozen, staring at the woman he had spent six years dreaming about."Legal director?" he whispered, completely stunned. His mouth felt as dry as dust."You’re late," Elara said with a scowl on her face as she looked at her watch."Elara?" Alex called out, his voice shaking. He took a step toward her, but her cold gaze stopped him in his tracks."It’s Mrs. Vance," she corrected him firmly. She used the title "Mrs." on purpose. She had two children to protect, and she wouldn't let anyone in this city think she was anything less than a respectable, married woman. Having people believe she had a powerful husband gave her a level of respect and safety she never had before.Alex felt like he had been punched in the gut. 'Mrs. Vance?' She had moved on and started a whole life without him.The board members looked between them, confused by the tension. Elara didn't blink. She just opened her laptop
