Elara felt like the floor was tilting. She was seeing and hearing things that couldn't be real. He called her by her name. Elara, not baby?

"I should leave?" she asked in stark disbelief.

She shook her head, trying to clear the fog in her brain. "Wait... so this party is not for us?" Elara needed clarity.

"No," Vivienne stretched the word out in her annoying valley-girl accent. She stepped closer, to Elara.. "It’s my birthday party," she snarled.

"Your birthday was months ago," Elara fired back. "Why would my boyfriend be throwing you a party now?"

She turned to Alex, but he had already shifted his gaze away, looking at anything but her. The silence from him was like a physical blow. Elara reached out, her fingers trembling as she grabbed his chin and forced his face back toward hers.

"Look me in the eye, you bastard!" she screamed. "Look at me while you’re breaking my heart! It’s the least I deserve!"

Alex finally stared her in the eye. But the man she saw wasn't the Alex who doted on her. These weren't the warm eyes she knew. They were cold, hard, and completely devoid of affection.

"I’m your girlfriend!" she said, hitting her chest with her fist, the sound thudding in the quiet room. "I'm your 'baby'! You told me that every single day!"

He didn't flinch. He looked at her—really looked at her—with a face that showed no mercy.

"Not anymore," he said, his voice flat. "I’m with Vivi now."

The crowd gasped. The whispers turned into laughter and judgment. Elara stood there in her white dress, the dress she thought she would be proposed in, feeling like the world's biggest fool.

"I thought we said forever," Elara whispered, the words trembling. "Was all of it a lie? And of all people... my best friend?"

Vivienne cleared her throat, a smug look on her face, but Elara didn't even glance at her. Her eyes were locked on Alex, searching for a single spark of the man she loved.

"You’re embarrassing yourself," Alex said, his voice dropping to a cold, warning tone. "Lower your voice. We’ll talk later."

He tried to walk away, but Elara reached out and grabbed the hem of his expensive suit jacket. She wouldn't let him go.

"You can't just walk away," she cried, her voice cracking. "Not like you didn't just waste three years of my life. I thought you loved me!"

She closed the distance between them, desperate for him to take it back. "You said you loved me, Alex. You said it every night."

Alex leaned down, his face inches from hers. But there was no kiss coming. "Lara, don't kid yourself," he hissed so only she could hear. "You aren't that delusional."

He straightened up, brushing her hand off his jacket like she was dirt.

Vivienne chimed in, stepping forward to stand right at Alex's side. "Did you really think a bottom-feeder like you was enough for a man like Alexander Sterling?" She laughed. "Look at you, Elara. You’re an orphan with nothing. You were just a distraction until he was ready for a real woman."

Alexander stood there in silence with an unreadable expression.

He didn't try defend her, Hell he didn't even look at her. Elara felt a cold chill run through her. Was that how he truly felt? Was she really just a "delusional" distraction?

Elara turned to Vivienne with her tear-filled eyes. "Vivi... I thought we were friends. We’ve been friends for so long. Since college..."

"Friends?" Vivienne scoffed with a look of pure disgust on her face. "Why would a poor nobody like you think you could ever be friends with someone like me? You were a charity project, Elara. Nothing more."

The room felt like it was shrinking. The judgment from the crowd was suffocating. Elara looked back at Alexander, waiting for him to snap out of it, to tell everyone it was a mistake.

Instead, he looked over her head toward the back of the room.

"Security," Alexander called out, his voice loud and commanding. "Make sure Elara leaves the premises immediately. She’s trespassing."

Elara’s heart didn't just break; it shattered. The man who had doted on her, who had searched for her, was now calling her a trespasser.

Two large men in black suits appeared behind her. They didn't be gentle. They grabbed her by her upper arms, their grip bruising the skin of her white dress.

"Alex, please!" she cried out as they began to drag her backward across the polished floor. "What happened? What did I do?"

He didn't answer. He simply turned his back to her, picked up his wine glass, and leaned in to whisper something in Vivienne’s ear. Vivienne laughed and the sound echoed in Elara's ears as the heavy gold doors swung shut.

Elara pulled her car into the drop-off lane and The Sterling Academy. It was the most prestigious school in the district—safest, most advanced. The irony burned. The only thing that made her feel better was that it was managed by Evelyn, Alexander's mother. "Okay, my little lions," Elara said, turning around to face the backseat.Leo was already adjusting his tiny blazer, looking exactly like a miniature version of Alexander. Lyra, meanwhile, was busy stuffing a drawing into her backpack."Mom, do I have to go? I wanted to finish my painting," Lyra pouted, her big eyes searching Elara's."You can finish it in art class, Lyra," Elara smiled, reaching back to tuck a stray hair behind her daughter's ear. "Think of all the new friends you'll make. And Leo, remember what we talked about?""Protect Lyra, don't talk to strangers, and do my math first," Leo recited with a serious nod.Elara’s heart squeezed. He was so much like Alexander it was terrifying—the same focus, the same protective

Alexander felt like he was about to throw up. He couldn't have Ethan anywhere near his Elara."You know what," he said, his voice strained. "I think I’ll pass. The deal is dead."Everyone in the room mirrored Elara’s expression of pure exasperation. Without another word, Alex turned on his heel and walked out of the conference room.Elara didn't hesitate. She followed him out, her heels clicking aggressively against the floor. "Are you fucking insane?" she asked loudly. The entire executive floor stopped to stare.Alexander didn't answer until he reached his office. He grabbed her by the arm, pulled her inside, and slammed the door shut. He inhaled deeply, trying to steady his racing heart."So let me get this straight," he said, pacing the room like a caged animal. "Alistair is your brother. And Ethan is the man you're currently seeing."Elara was shocked. He knew Ethan? But how? "It's none of your business," she snapped, crossing her arms over her chest. He stopped pacing and ran a

"Sister?" Alex asked, his voice cracking as he stood there completely flabbergasted. "I didn't know—" He trailed off, looking between them as the gears finally turned. "Wait, Lara... is he...?"Elara nodded, her expression weary under the weight of the lobby's gaze. "He’s my brother. Alistair Vance.""So," Alex continued, his brain still struggling to catch up, "you guys are...""Siblings," Elara completed the sentence sharply. "Now, can we go home?"Alex’s eyes widened further as a memory clicked into place. "That's why Lyra called him uncle. That means..." He stepped closer, his voice dropping to a low, urgent whisper that ignored the crowd. "That means you found your mum? You found your family?"By now, Elara was fed up with the interrogation. The vulnerability of her past was being picked apart in a room full of strangers. "I think we're ready to leave now," she said, her voice hard."Wait," Alex said, reaching out instinctively. "I—I just—""You have no right to ask me things abo

Elara pulled up to her estate gate, already exhausted from the emotional whiplash of the day. But the security guard stepped out of the booth, looking overwhelmed. "Ma'am, we have a... situation. These were delivered for you an hour ago."Behind the gate sat ten massive bouquets, each packed so tightly with tulips that they looked like solid walls of color. Ten bouquets, a thousand tulips each. Ten thousand flowers sat there, glowing under the streetlights. Elara reached out and pulled the small, cream-colored card from the nearest one."I'll love you a thousand times over. ~Love, Alex."Elara started coughing uncontrollably, the sheer audacity of the gesture hitting her like a physical blow. She clutched the card, her eyes watering. 'Ten thousand tulips? So now remembers?' "Ma'am? Where do you want them?" the guard asked, scratching his head.Elara tucked the card back into the petals and straightened her back, her face hardening into a mask of indifference. "Toss them," she said co

Vivienne let out a laugh that sounded like glass breaking. "By the way, how’s your husband? Or boyfriend?" she asked, leaning back into the velvet cushions. "I honestly don't know who is who anymore. You seem to have so many men in your rotation, Lara."Elara summoned every bit of self-control she had left. Her fingers were still digging into her palms. 'Are Alex and his little whore obsessed with me?' she wondered. It felt like they were both constantly trying to trip her up, to make her look like the villain.Elara inhaled deeply, refusing to give Vivienne the satisfaction of a shouting match. She turned her head away from the snake on the sofa and looked directly at Evelyn. "I think that’s enough shopping for today, Auntie. I really need to get back to work. There are files I need to finish."She saw Vivienne’s smug expression out of the corner of her eye. Vivienne thought she had won. She thought she had embarrassed Elara in front of the one woman whose opinion still mattered to h

Monday morning was a blur of spreadsheets and legal documents. Elara was so deep into her work that she didn't even notice her office door creak open."Can I come in?"The voice was soft, elegant, and instantly recognizable. Elara looked up and froze. Standing there was Evelyn Sterling—Alexander’s mother."Umm..." Elara stammered, her hands hovering over her keyboard. She didn't know what to say."I heard my sweet girl was back," Evelyn said, walking into the room with a graceful smile. "I had to come and verify that information for myself."Looking at her, Elara felt a sharp pain in her chest. Back in college, Eve had been the closest thing to a mother she ever had. Evelyn had loved her like her own child, protecting her and cheering her on when Elara had no one.But as Elara looked into those kind eyes, her heart felt like it was bleeding. This woman was a Sterling. She was part of the family that had destroyed Elara's father and stolen their legacy. The guilt of what she was plann

Alexander stopped mid-punch, his glove hanging heavy in the air. He was at the gym with his best friend Eren Lakeland and childhood buddy, Ryan Montrose, trying to blow off some steam. Boxing was his only escape. After Elara had practically called him a sex offender earlier, he felt sick and upse
