Chapter 2

Author: Washing Wheat
Ignazio said, "She made Chiara suffer, so she deserves to suffer the same kind of discomfort."

My entire body instantly stiffened. It felt as though my heart had been torn out of my chest and crushed over and over again. It hurt so badly that I could barely breathe.

The next day, Chiara and I were discharged from the hospital together.

Ignazio came to pick us up personally. I didn't want to ride in the same car with them, but he pushed me into the vehicle anyway.

But not long after we set off, the steering wheel suddenly malfunctioned. The car sped straight toward the roadside guardrail.

At the most critical moment, Chiara suddenly threw herself in front of me to shield me. As a result, she slammed hard against the car seat.

By the time Ignazio reacted to what was happening, he saw Chiara protecting me with her body. His hand instinctively reached toward her, but when his gaze met mine, he suddenly came back to his senses.

"Carlotta, thank goodness you're okay," he said.

Even as Chiara was taken away in the ambulance, he didn't look at her again.

But in an empty hospital room, Ignazio pinned her beneath him, his eyes filled with suppressed anger.

He growled, "Why did you play the hero and throw yourself over her? You're a pregnant woman! Are you trying to drive yourself to an early death?"

The next second, Ignazio kissed her fiercely.

So Chiara was pregnant again.

My heart had already gone numb by then. Silently, I turned and walked away.

That night, Ignazio didn't come home. It wasn't until the next morning that he stood by my bed with eyes full of disappointment.

"I checked that car. Someone tampered with the steering wheel," he said.

I looked up at him in disbelief. "You suspect it's my doing?"

Ignazio let out a sigh and said, "I told you before. I'm only using Chiara. Once I'm done with her, I'll send her away. She can't threaten your position. She even risked her life to protect you. Why can't you tolerate her?"

In the middle of the sweltering summer heat, I felt a chill creep deep into my bones.

Ignazio didn't trust me at all. In the days that followed, he began deliberately neglecting me.

However, I no longer cared. In just two more days, I would be taking Antonio with me and leaving for good.

The day before my departure was the fifth anniversary of my marriage to Ignazio. I had thought he would continue ignoring me.

To my surprise, he chartered a luxury cruise ship to celebrate with me. But the moment we boarded, one of his men informed him that Chiara had gone missing again.

That night, Ignazio practically turned the entire city upside down searching for her, but he still could not find any trace of her. He smashed a vase, and its shards scattered across my feet.

"Honey, tell me where Chiara is," he demanded.

I shook my head and mumbled, "I don't know… I really don't know…"

This wasn't the first time he had suspected me because of Chiara. Still, my chest ached as if it were being torn apart.

Soon, someone handed over Chiara's phone from before her disappearance. The last call she had made was to me.

Ignazio rubbed his throbbing temples and barked, "Carlotta Zucco, the evidence is right here. Are you still going to deny it?"

I laughed coldly and retorted, "Just because of one phone call, you've decided that I hired someone to kidnap Chiara. Is that it?"

I remembered the phone call Chiara had made to me before she disappeared.

She had confessed shamelessly, "I caused the allergic reaction myself, and I deliberately damaged the steering wheel too. I knew I wouldn't really get hurt, so I threw myself onto you and put on a show.

"A man's sympathy and guilt are the strongest shackles. I'm going to make Ignazio soften toward me little by little and compensate me bit by bit until I completely replace you."

Her ambition had been unmistakable through the phone.

She had gone on, "Carlotta, I know you and Ignazio have a child. Do you dare make a bet with me? Let's bet on which one of us is more important to Ignazio—you and your child, or me and my unborn child in my belly."

Her disappearance was nothing more than a performance she had staged herself.

Sadly, Ignazio didn't believe a single word I said.

At the brief moment their figures collided, Benedetto said to Ignazio, "My rescue team will be here any moment. You stay outside and provide support."Ignazio was a step behind, so he could only stop at the doorway.Benedetto rushed into the room and looked at me tenderly. "Don't be afraid, Carlotta. I'm here."At that instant, my heart began pounding wildly. I shook my head desperately as tears streamed uncontrollably from my eyes. All the strength and courage I had forced myself to maintain throughout the night collapsed the moment I saw him."You idiot!" I scolded.I would rather die than let Benedetto risk himself for me.He gave me a reassuring look. Then he turned toward Chiara and spoke in a calm, steady voice. "I'm here now. Let her go."Chiara burst into manic laughter, her voice sounding like a demon from hell. "You think I'd really let her leave? I never planned on getting out of this alive anyway. Even if I die, I won't let any of you have peace!"A ruthless and

Ignazio said, "Carlotta, I've given you everything. You've had your revenge. Isn't it time to forgive me?"I remained expressionless as I replied, "I never intended to forgive you."Antonio was dead, and he had died in such a cruel way at Ignazio's own hands. Because of that, I would never forgive him.The light in Ignazio's eyes dimmed instantly. For the last time, he tentatively reached out and held my hand. In his eyes was a humble, hopeful glimmer. He asked, "Carlotta… can we start over, please? Can't we be together again?"I pulled my hand away and wiped it off in disgust. A cold, cruel smile graced my lips as I asked rhetorically, "What do you think?"Ignazio knew that look all too well.Whenever I made my rejection clear, I wore that exact expression—it meant never. The last trace of light in Ignazio's eyes went out. His heart sank to his stomach. He knew there was no possibility left for him to win me back. He no longer had any right to even be in my presence.Howeve

Covered in blood, Chiara hung suspended in the air. There was blood smeared across her entire face as she laughed like a madwoman. She screeched, "You think doing all this will win Carlotta's heart back? Dream on! You're the one who killed your own son. You're the one who let those men violate her. The true culprit behind everything is you!"If I'm the knife that cut into Carlotta and Antonio, then you're the one who drove that knife in with your own hands!"Chiara hit a sore spot with her words. The savagery in Ignazio's eyes intensified. With a wave of his hand, someone stepped forward and stuffed a filthy rag into Chiara's mouth.Ignazio decided that he would definitely win me back.…A few days later, I went alone to the cemetery to visit Antonio's grave. Ignazio followed me there. The moment he saw Antonio's tombstone, he remembered the small body inside the sack.He mumbled, "Antonio, Daddy's here to see you. Ignazio's back hunched over bit by bit with shame. He could never make it up to me for every single one of the harm he had caused me.He crawled forward on his knees until he reached my side, just like how I had once crawled on my knees before him in tears when Antonio had been stuffed into that sack.Ignazio lifted his head. His eyes were bloodshot, and his face was covered in tears. He cried, "Carlotta, I know Antonio was my child. I know everything now. I've already dealt with Chiara too! I was wrong. How utterly wrong I was!"Panicked and trembling, he hurriedly removed a necklace from around his neck and held out a small finger bone to me.His voice trembled as he said, "I had my men search the sea for Antonio. Look at this. This was his!"My body stiffened as my gaze shifted to the tiny finger bone. My breathing caught in my throat. My dear Antonio…A sharp pain tore through my heart. With reddened eyes, I snatched it away and slapped Ignazio hard across the face.I shou

Ignazio walked over to Chiara and stepped on her face. "Even if I have to wager my entire famiglia, I will avenge Carlotta. Take her away. Ignazio couldn't comprehend what he was seeing. How was that possible? Weren't those beggars the ones I had hired to humiliate Chiara? How could they have turned on me so mercilessly? An overwhelming wave of panic instantly swallowed him whole, and he lost his mind.Ignazio smashed the giant screen on the spot. Then, he confiscated everyone's photos and recordings. He ordered all the guests present not to spread a word about what they had seen. The next second, Ignazio abandoned Chiara and rushed frantically toward the cruise ship. The ship was completely empty. It remained frozen in the state it had been in half a month earlier.Ignazio arrived at the cabin where I had been imprisoned. He stopped abruptly, trembling so hard that he could not muster the strength to push open the door for a long time."Honey, are you… still here?"
