Chapter 2

Autor: Cheesie
Early the next morning, Luca used his spare key to unlock the iron door to the basement.

A foul stench of mold and medicine rolled out. The woman from next door took one look inside and stumbled back, covering her mouth with one hand.

She knew that stench all too well. Her own mother had died the same way.

"Something's happened! Somebody get help!" she shouted.

I lay beside the bed, my face ashen, my lips cracked and peeling.

On the nightstand sat half a glass of cold water, and beside it was a bottle of painkillers with most of the pills gone.

When Luca saw the diagnosis report in my hand, his knees buckled, and he collapsed to the floor.

"Oh God… I should have forced the door open yesterday."

While the commotion echoed through the narrow alleys of Palarmo's old quarter, Federico sat at the dining table in his manor, taking his time over a plate of fried eggs.

Julia handed him a cup of coffee, her fingertips brushing lightly over the back of his hand.

"Sounds like quite a crowd is gathering over by the basement," she said. "I wonder what's going on."

Federico frowned. "Is she still making a scene?"

A maid rushed in, her face pale as a sheet. "Mr. Moretti, everyone out there is saying someone died in the basement."

Federico dropped his fork, the metal clattering against the plate.

The color drained from Julia's face. "Someone died?"

Federico shot to his feet, his chair legs screeching across the stone floor. "Sera, you'd better not be taking this too far."

By the time he reached the basement, a large crowd had already gathered outside the door.

Luca spotted him and shouted, "That's him! He's the dead woman's husband!"

Federico stopped in his tracks. Then he laughed. "She put you all up to this?"

He stepped forward and raised his voice toward the doorway. "Sera, come on out. Enough with the tantrum. Fine, you win. I'm back."

Only silence answered him.

Luca blocked his way. "Mr. Moretti, you need to stay calm."

Federico shoved his arm aside. "I'm her husband! You think I don't know what she's like? She's just throwing a fit to force my hand—"

His words died in his throat as Luca pulled back the white sheet, revealing my face.

For one long second, he looked as if an invisible hand had closed around his throat. Every word he'd been about to say lodged in his chest.

One of the neighbors handed him the diagnosis report. "Your wife had a malignant tumor. It was already advanced."

Federico stared at the paper, his knuckles turning white as he gripped it. "That's not possible… Just yesterday… she asked me what'd happen if she really died. I thought she was just making a scene. How could she actually be dead?"

Luca trembled with rage. "She started coughing up blood last month. I told her to go to the hospital, but she said she didn't have any extra money. She said you were already working three jobs and had it hard enough. She couldn't be a burden to you."

The woman from next door had tears in her eyes too.

"Every night when she came home, she had to steady herself against the wall," she said, her voice thick with a Palarmo accent. "She'd gotten so thin it broke my heart. I made her a bowl of pasta once, and she still forced two aureos into my hand for it."

She rounded on Federico, glaring at him. "You're a grown man, and you had no idea your wife was this sick? Are you blind?"

Federico's lips quivered. His voice sounded strained, as if every word had to be forced through his throat. "She never told me. I really didn't know—"

"You didn't know?" Luca sneered. "I called you yesterday, and you told me she was faking! I said I'd call the police, and you stopped me! Now she's dead. You're her husband, but you're standing here telling us you didn't know?"

Julia arrived in her heels, which clicked against the floor with every step.

She stopped in the doorway and covered her nose before speaking softly. "Federico, the smell in here is terrible…"

Federico slowly turned his head to look at her.

Julia's eyes instantly filled with tears. "I'm not saying that because I'm disgusted. I'm just scared…"

She turned to the crowd, her voice soft. "Was Sera emotionally unstable for a while? Otherwise, why would she do something so extreme?"

Federico suddenly clenched the diagnosis report in his fist, crumpling the paper into deep creases.

I floated behind him and watched his body begin to tremble.

Maybe he was finally realizing that I was truly dead.

  • His Loyalty Test Killed Me   Chapter 11

The Moretti family had fallen from grace.Claudia sold the estate outside Palarmo to pay off their debts and moved into an ordinary apartment. Unable to bear the judgmental looks from the neighbors, she kept the curtains drawn all day. Rumor had it that she never left the apartment again.Julia tried to play the victim through livestreams. She cried in front of the camera, her voice soft and pitiful. "I'm a victim in all of this too… I just loved Federico too much… I never meant for Sera to die."The viewer count soared by the second, and comments flooded the screen at a dizzying pace. Her eyes lit up. She thought she could finally turn things around. But the next second, the streaming platform brought my former attending physician onto the livestream. The elderly doctor appeared on screen in his white coat. He asked only one question. "Were you the one who told the hospital that Sera refused treatment?"Julia's tear-streaked face froze. She couldn't utter a single word. The

The day the compensation money arrived, the orphanage got a new roof.Sicelly's rainy season was coming again. In the past, whenever it rained, the children had to use washbasins to catch the water dripping through the leaks. The steady dripping would continue all night. They wouldn't have to do that anymore.A new classroom was built too. Lucia named it "Sera's Reading Room".I had asked her not to put my name on it, but she said the children deserved to know who had made all this possible.A photo of me hung by the entrance. I was wearing a white dress, my hair tied back in a ponytail, and smiling a little shyly. The photo had been taken the year I graduated from college.Back then, I hadn't met Federico yet. I hadn't learned to swallow all my pain and keep it to myself. Now, the children sat studying in their bright classroom. Sunlight poured through the new windows, scattering across their desks like flecks of gold.Lucia would often sit by the windowsill, pull up the last

On the day the Commission released the findings of its investigation, the hall was packed. My landlord and my neighbor were there too. The children from the orphanage sat in the last row with Lucia, their little hands clasped tightly in their laps. When my attending physician took the stand, his voice was steady and composed."When Serafina Conti had her first checkup, she wasn't beyond treatment. If she had received timely follow-up care and been hospitalized, she could have lived much longer—possibly even returned to a near-normal state of health. However, her family repeatedly refused to cooperate."Federico froze. "Her family?" he echoed in disbelief. The doctor nodded, then turned his gaze toward Julia. He explained further, "We called the number listed in her records. The woman who answered is the one standing there."He paused briefly before continuing, "She claimed the patient was emotionally unstable and refused treatment. We kept following up, but someone kept delaying

My funeral was held in the small chapel of the church-run orphanage.Lucia said that since I had never lived in a bright, sunlit house while I was alive, the Morettis had no right to take me away after my death. The chapel was small but spotless. Led by Lucia, the children placed handmade, white paper flowers before my portrait one by one. The flowers were crooked and imperfect, but each one was made with love. And then, Federico arrived. He stood outside the iron gate, holding an old cardboard box in his arms. His suit was crumpled, his face unshaven, and his eyes so deeply sunken that he looked like a completely different man.The security guard stopped him. "Ms. Bellini said you're not allowed in.""I just want to see her one last time," Federico rasped, his voice raw and broken.Lucia stepped out of the chapel. In the three months since they had last seen each other, her hair had turned almost entirely gray. Her eyes were swollen, and she had lost a considerable amount of we

After the succession ceremony, Federico was taken away for questioning.Julia couldn't escape either. The people who once fawned over her now sneered at her and looked at her with contempt. Her usual polished look had completely fallen apart. Her makeup was smeared across her face, and damp strands of hair clung to her cheeks. One of her high heels had snapped, forcing her to limp with every step."I didn't hurt her, so why is everyone turning against me?" Julia asked bitterly. "It was Federico who wanted to test her. He kept her locked in the basement and forged his payroll check. I just love him. What did I do wrong?"Federico happened to be walking past when he heard her words. He stopped in his tracks and slowly turned to look at her.Julia immediately clung to her last shred of hope. She pulled out her phone and held it up for everyone around her to see."Look!" she shrieked. "He never really loved Sera! He said it himself—Sera was so poor that she disgusted him!"A voice r

On the day of the succession ceremony, the main hall of Moretti Manor was buzzing with activity. Candlelight flickered from the bronze sconces along the walls, illuminating a painting of the Virgin Mary beneath the high, vaulted ceiling. The hall was packed shoulder-to-shoulder. Everyone was there—Capos of the Moretti family, visiting delegates from Corvella and Caviano, and a special envoy, Dante Lombardi, who had been sent all the way from Novara by the Commission. They were all dressed in black suits, each wearing a silver olive-branch brooch on the collar. This was the highest-profile gathering in the Sicellian underworld.Federico stood before the altar, clad in a three-piece suit of midnight black, his necktie replaced by the deep crimson of the family crest. After five long years as the Underboss, this was the night he had been waiting for.Claudia sat in an armchair in the front row, the gilded backrest reflecting the barely concealed pride on her face.Behind the heavy dr
