~HAZEL~

Something happened last night.

I woke up knowing it—without being able to explain the proof.

It sat in the air between us like frost: brittle, impossible to ignore.

Ashton wouldn't look at me.

Not once.

He'd been up before light filtered through the cave mouth, already gone before I'd even opened my eyes. When he came back he had meat dangling from his fist.

Now he was stacking firewood again—armful after armful—though we already had enough to last two nights. Every log clacked against the pile with more force than necessary. The sound cracked through the air and I bit down on my lip until it hurt.

The producers had made their second announcement an hour ago, voice gleeful: Ariel, Ashton's mate, would arrive in one hour, fifty minutes, and counting.

Fifty more minutes until everything changed again.

I hugged my knees to my chest on the flat rock I'd claimed as a seat, watching the muscles in his back flex every time he bent and straightened.

He looked...feral. Beautiful an

  • His Mate Or His Step-Sister   Chapter 96

~ASHTON~Ariel stood before me, her eyes shimmering. Her whisper cut through the silence like a blade."Does it truly matter what I think?"The words hit me harder than any challenge in this cursed game. I reached for her hand instinctively, my fingers wrapping around hers, squeezing with a desperation I hoped she couldn't feel. "Of course," I say, my voice rougher than I intended it to be. "Of course it matters what you think, Ariel. More than anything."I hate that she needs to ask me such a question. She sighed, a soft, trembling sound that twisted something deep in my chest. Her gaze dropped to our joined hands before lifting back to mine, vulnerability etched across her beautiful features. "I know you will never betray me, Ashton. I know the type of person you are—the honorable one, the loyal one. Everything that's been happening here. . .it's not your fault. The Keepers are forcing you to get closer to Hazel. They're manipulating all of us. They're trying to tear us apart."He

  • His Mate Or His Step-Sister   Chapter 95

~ASHTON~"I'm so happy," Ariel tells me with a bright smile lighting up her entire face, her eyes sparkling in a way that used to make my heart race without effort. "I have missed this so much."I force a smile back at her, wrapping my arm a little tighter around her shoulders as we sit on the fallen log. She leans into me, her head resting against my chest, and for a moment, the familiarity of it all washes over me—the scent of her hair, the warmth of her body pressed against mine. I was glad she was having a good time; she deserved it after everything. But I wish I felt the same uncontrolled joy. Never before have I sat next to Ariel while she hugged and kissed me, her lips soft and sweet, and all I could think about was another woman.Hazel.Her name echoes in my mind like a persistent whisper, refusing to fade. No. I clench my jaw inwardly. I would not be weak. Not now. I was finally seeing Ariel again after weeks of forced separation, weeks spent in this cursed place with its end

  • His Mate Or His Step-Sister   Chapter 94

~HAZEL~I hadn't recovered from the humiliation of that moment from yesterday—not even close. Falling flat on my face while stumbling upon Ashton and Ariel tangled in each other's arms, their bodies pressed close in a way that left no room for doubt about what was about to happen. If I'd arrived just seconds later, I would have witnessed everything: the raw passion between mates, their bodies joining as one. The thought alone made my stomach churn. Seeing even the warm-up had broken something inside me, and I wasn't sure I could ever piece it back together. It was the next day now, and my body refused to cooperate. Sleep evaded me entirely; every time I closed my eyes, flashes of their intertwined bodies replayed in vivid detail—Ashton's hands on her body, her soft gasps echoing in the cave. Eating was impossible; the mere idea of food turned my throat tight. Even resting brought no relief. My mind was a relentless bully, looping the scene over and over until I felt like I was drown

  • His Mate Or His Step-Sister   Chapter 93

~HAZEL~As I made my way back toward the cave, the weight of seeing Ashton and Ariel together again pressed on my shoulders.I should be thinking about the dangers lurking close by, but my mind wandered elsewhere—to Ashton. Always to Ashton. His eyes, his quiet strength, the way he protected me without complaint. I shouldn't think of him this way. He had Ariel, his true mate. Yet, my wolf stirred restlessly whenever he was near, whispering things I dared not acknowledge.I spot the cave mouth ahead. As I walk towards it, expecting to find them in deep conversation, my heart pounds aggressively. There, on the ground, were Ariel and Ashton entangled in a passionate embrace. Ashton was shirtless, his broad, muscled chest gleaming in sweat, wearing only his pants. Ariel straddled him, her hands roaming his chest as she ground against him. His strong arms encircled her waist, pulling her closer, their lips locked in a heated kiss. The air was thick with their mingled scent and soft moans

  • His Mate Or His Step-Sister   Chapter 92

~ASHTON~ Ariel leans into me, her arms looped loosely around my neck. Her scent wraps around my senses the way it always has, familiar, soothing, right. Having her here again, pressed against my side in this damn cave, should feel like the world snapping back into place. For a moment it does. My wolf settles, because his mate is finally where she belongs. Then the guilt hits. Not the guilt I was braced for. No. This is sharper, an uglier feeling.Guilt that every time I brush my lips across Ariel's skin, Hazel is near. Guilt that when Ariel's fingers slide through mine, I feel like I'm breaking a promise I never spoke aloud.Guilt that touching my actual mate feels...treasonous. Simply because of one person, one person that should not have such a strong impact on me. What the fuck is wrong with me?Ariel is my mate. The bond between us roared the first time I saw her, violent and undeniable, the way the stories say it's supposed to. Hazel is my step-sister. Family, yes. But never

  • His Mate Or His Step-Sister   Chapter 91

~HAZEL~The portal tears open, light spilling across the cave walls, and then Ariel steps through. My lungs forget how to work. She's in black leggings that cling like second skin and a cropped top in the same color, the fabric stretched tight over every curve the universe apparently decided to gift her. Her red hair is windswept from the portal, and her eyes find Ashton immediately—like a compass needle finding north—and the smile that breaks across her face is so radiant it is like the sun. Ashton is already moving. He doesn't walk; he lunges, arms wrapping around her waist, lifting her clear off the ground as she laughs into his neck. The sound is bright, delighted, intimate. I feel it in my chest like a blade."I missed you so much," she whispers, covering his jaw with kisses, each one soft and filled with emotion. Then her mouth finds his, and the kiss isn't brief or polite. It's deep, hungry, the kind that makes the air around them feel too thin for anyone else to breathe. It
