The moment the gym doors crashed open, my wolf lunged toward the surface when three men in suits strolled in like this was some kind of James Bond movie.
MINE. PROTECT HER.
Kane’s voice was a snarl in my skull, tearing at the mental restraints I’d kept locked tight for years. He sensed a threat and he was ready to fight.
From their scent I knew they weren’t wolves. And since their eyes haven’t left the girl standing next to me, it’s easy to assume they were there for her.
Well, that was a twist I hadn't expected when I walked into the gym and found her.
The buzzing under my skin from the game stopped when I noticed how still Mia had gone beside me. Her heart was pounding so hard I felt it in my bones.
Her scent, mixed with a bit of fear, hit me again, crawling under my skin like fire.
“Hello, sweetheart,” the man in front said, and something dark twisted inside me.
Kane didn’t like that and neither did I. I didn't want him looking at her, much less speaking to her. The thought was crazy but my mind has become something else since I inhaled her scent when I first came in.
“Your father’s been looking for you.” The same man added.
“David,” she said, her voice carefully neutral. “I didn’t realize my father sent his security team to campus.”
“He’s concerned. You left your engagement party rather abruptly.” David’s eyes flicked to me then back to her again. “We’re here to escort you home.”
“I’m not going home.”
“I’m afraid that’s not a request, Miss Danvers.”
Kane surged again, harder this time. He didn’t like the way these men were looking at Mia. Didn’t like the barely concealed threat in their voices. He simply didn’t like them existing in the same space as our—
No. She wasn’t ours. She was human. This wasn’t my problem. I should leave and let her deal with whatever this is.
But when David took a step toward Mia, I moved before I could think, stepping into his line of sight, blocking him from reaching her. His eyes flicked to me dismissively. I was close to letting my wolf tear him apart.
“The lady said she’s not going,” my voice was even.
David’s eyes narrowed. “And you are?”
“Someone who’s wondering why three grown men need to corner a college student in an empty gym at midnight.”
The temperature in the room dropped. David snarled at me.
“This is a family matter. It doesn’t concern you.”
“Xavier,” Mia said softly behind me, and hearing my name in her mouth made something in my chest twist. “It’s okay. I’ll—”
“No.” I couldn’t look at her. If I did, if I saw fear in those storm gray eyes, Kane would rip through my control and these men would see exactly what I was. “You don’t have to go anywhere you don’t want to go.”
“How noble,” David said. “But you’re out of your depth, boy. This girl is engaged to be married. Her father and her fiancé are waiting. And trust me when I say you don’t want to get in the middle of this.”
I felt my eyes begin to change, my canines lengthening at his words. I forced them back with effort that made my muscles scream.
“Then I guess we have a problem,” I said, “because I’m already in the middle of it.”
David stared at me for a long moment. I could see him calculating, weighing the cost of pushing this further. Whatever he saw in my face made him reconsider.
“Fine,” he said finally. “We’ll give Miss Danvers some time to think about her choices.” He looked past me to Mia. “But your father expects a call soon. And your fiancé…” He smiled. “You know Mr. Alaric can be very persuasive when he wants to be. I’d hate to see him… disappointed.”
His threat was clear.
“We’ll be in touch,” David said. Then he and his men turned and walked out, the doors slamming shut behind them.
I turned to find Mia staring at me, her hand still clutching that necklace. Her eyes were wide, her face pale, but there was something else there too.
“Why did you do that?” she whispered.
Because you’re mine, my wolf howled. Because I’d burn this entire city down before I let them take you.
“No one would allow a girl to follow three strange men in the middle of the night.” I said instead.
“I don’t need a savior.” She looked at me like I insulted her.
“I know.”
“And now you’re involved. Now they’ll…” She shook her head. “They’ll come after you. You shouldn’t have—”
“I know that too.”
Mia looked at me like she was trying to figure out a puzzle that didn’t quite fit together.
Before she could ask any of the questions I could see on the tip of her tongue, I dismissed her. “Go back to your dorm. You shouldn’t be out by this time.”
I expected her to argue, I could see the wheels turning in her head.
“Thank you,” she said finally. “For… whatever that was.”
Then she grabbed her bag and walked toward the exit. She paused at the door, looking back at me one more time.
I stood alone in the empty gym, my wolf howling in my head, my hands still trembling with the effort of keeping my claws sheathed. My body is still buzzing from the few times we touched while playing the game. I felt like I was on fire and I needed to burn all of that energy somehow.
I was certain about one thing. That girl was going to be the death of me.
XAVIERWe stayed in one corner of the house, deep in the night. We had to be really careful to make sure that no one was still awake or able to hear what we were talking about. I stood at the corner while Marissa was busy trying to get him to come see me. They were supposed to come here thirty minutes ago but they were nowhere in sight and I couldn't call her because it was risky. My heart was beating because with the way my father was losing sleep over this issue, it would be very easy for him to walk down to my room to speak to me. I kept peaking out of the corner to see if they were coming but I couldn't even hear footsteps. The next thing was to call her because the more time we spent, the riskier it became. As soon as her phone started to ring, I heard footsteps down the hall. I put my phone back into my pocket to stop the light coming from my screen. “What took you so long? I was starting to get worried.” She was panting heavily. “I'm so sorry. My dad stopped me to talk
XAVIER“What did he tell you?”She closed the door properly before turning to me. “He said the wedding must happen by the weekend. That's in two days. We need to find a way to call it off.”Madison and I have reached some kind of agreement. When I confronted her about the fact that I knew she didn't want to marry me, she didn't deny it. Instead, the first thing. She asked was how we would convince our fathers to see the same.I didn't ask her who she was in love with but the fact that I knew she didn't want to marry me was enough for me to work hard enough to see that this thing didn't happen. “Two days is time for us to think of something. Your boyfriend…is he ready? All you have to do is say the word and I'll help you get passports and everything you need to start a new life abroad.”She looked happy but at a loss. “That would have been the best option but he's hesitant. He has family here and they mean a lot to him. He doesn't want to leave them here. Coupled with the fact that
MIAIn my bid to get my life back on track, I decided to focus on the one thing my life centered around. Getting to know and under my powers. Right now, the only person who could help me do that was Magma. From what I know, I was going to have to get My Book it Spells from my father. The last time I asked him about it, he said he didn't know what I was talking about. At that point, it did sound like he was telling the truth but I hadn't been focused since I was in the hospital. Maybe I should bring it up again so that I'd be sure of his answer. Last night, I reached out to him to tell him that I was fine and I'd be going to school the next day. He waited a moment before responding, breathing heavily into the phone as if he was trying to think of an answer to give me. Eventually, he responded. “That’s good. You should return to school. How are you doing?”“Good…good. Do you need anything?”Yes. A hug, maybe some ice cream. “No, I'm good. Just wanted to let you know. Also, I wa
MIAFor the first time in almost a week, I turned on my phone. I'd left the house and rented an apartment on the opposite side of the city, far away from everyone I knew. It's not like I wanted to clear my head. No, I was running away from the truth. What I'd heard, my heart couldn't take it. After my father had told me what Xavier had heard in the office, a huge part of my heart was broken but the part that wanted to believe him and everything we'd been through told me that it was a lie and that I was imagining things. So I decided to go see him and confront him about it. Even though I knew that his father would be there and most probably make things hard for the both of us, I decided to go and hear him out so I won't just hear from everyone besides him. Maybe I should have just left the house without stopping by Falcon's room but the universe didn't want me to keep making a fool of myself so I overheard the conversation. She was on the phone with him when I heard her mutter. “S
XAVIERDinner was just half an hour long but it felt like it was an eternity. Mainly because I and Marissa were the central focus. Our fathers hammered us with questions that we didn't know what to answer because it made us very uncomfortable. Half of my attention was on Marissa because unlike before, she was quiet even when her father teased her about finally getting married to me. She didn't say anything, barely smiled and just poked at her food. It made me think about earlier times in the garden. She was quiet and I had to be the one who kept pushing a conversation. At one point when we stood close, she moved away as if trying to maintain distance between us. Was she disgusted by me now and did she finally want to move on? It made me think about the whole thing but I didn't want to mount pressure on it just yet. “Xavier, your father has told me that you're very serious about Marissa and I've seen things for myself. I think it's time I huh emh blessing. After all, it's been lo
XAVIERThey were in the living room, her father was laughing at something my father said and Marissa was at the end of the couch, sitting still. I had to try my best to make this look very believable, believable enough for them to ask to arrange the wedding again. The fact that I had no attraction towards her or any form of interest was going to make things weird. But I had to suck it up. My father noticed my presence and called their attention to it. “He's here, my son.” They turned around to look at me and I joined the conversation. “Welcome. I hope your journey wasn't too stressful.” Her father stood up and walked over to me, standing very close and giving me an intense look. I didn't want to meet his eyes so I just concentrated on his shoes. He stretched his hand out to me, a sign of peace. “You've finally come to your senses. That's a good thing. When your father called me, I was skeptical but you've proven yourself to be a man. Very good of you.”He moved out of the way
MIAFor the week following that day, it seemed like I lived in some form of fairy tale because I didn't have anything to worry about. There was no pressing issue on my neck, I wasn't sick, I wasn't being attacked. I just lived. It has been a very long time since I had a peaceful life. It now felt
MIA“What were you expecting?”“I don't know, to feel different.” The sun was already high in the sky when I woke up, it was pouring into the room heavily and made me sweat. Seeing that I slept till this late, I was just telling Xavier that I was happy that I could get sleep but now that I was awa
MIANighttime eventually came and even though I had been looking forward to it, now that it was here, I didn't want to anymore. The fact that I didn't know what exactly we were dealing with scared me. “Come on out, dear. We have a lot to do tonight. You don't have to be worried. Back in the day,
MIAIt had all been a dream, the whole thing. By the time I woke up, sweat was dripping down my face and my heart was racing faster than an Olympic runner. It was day again, which seemed to offer little relief. Seeing my dad, Xavier and Ekara standing over me, I could tell that they had heard som
