‎The presidential suite on the top floor of the coastal city's most exclusive hotel offered a full view of the ocean, but to Ethan Vance it was just another room he didn't want to be in.

‎He sat on the edge of the leather sofa, In front of him on the coffee table sat two things. A photograph of Rosalie and their son. And a file thick enough to hold five years of a life he had missed entirely.

‎Mark stood by the door, keeping quiet. He had served the Vance family for over a decade but he had never seen Ethan like this. He sat with his shoulders dropped, his hands loose in his lap. Nothing about him resembled the man who had once walked into rooms like he owned them, he had gone quiet in a way that had nothing to do with peace.

‎"Read it to me," Ethan's voice rasped into the silence, dry and worn. "Every detail of the last five years. Don't leave anything out."

‎Mark stepped forward, opening his laptop. "After leaving the hospital five years ago, Mrs. Vance"

‎"Rosalie," Ethan corrected quietly, his head bowed. "Call her Rosalie."

‎"Rosalie stayed at Mr. Sterling's private estate for the entirety of her pregnancy," Mark continued carefully. "Our records show she refused to take financial handouts. Even while carrying your child, she spent a lot of hours in a day studying international corporate law, art curation, and tech infrastructure. When young Master Leo was born, she took only three weeks of rest before she began managing small portfolio assets for the Sterling Group."

‎Ethan gripped his knees, his knuckles whitening. He closed his eyes, seeing her heartbroken, carrying the weight of a secret pregnancy yet forcing herself to stay awake through the night to build a future for their child. While he had been sitting in his vast mansion drinking himself to sleep, she had been fighting to survive.

‎"She paid for her own medical fees using the dividends from her small investments even though she could be assisted by Christopher," Mark added softly. "She never used a single cent tied to the Vance name. Not once."

‎A heavy knot tightened in Ethan's chest until it became difficult to breathe. He had offered her millions in that cold hospital corridor, treating her as if her dignity could be bought. And she had built an empire without touching a penny of it.

‎Before Mark could continue, his secure phone chimed with an urgent notification. He glanced at the screen, his calm demeanor instantly sharpening.

‎"What is it?" Ethan asked, not looking up.

‎"It's Chloe, sir," Mark said. "Having lost everything after your legal embargo on her family, she tried to sell a story to three major entertainment tabloids an hour ago. She is claiming that five years ago Rosalie was an unfaithful gold digger who ran off with an older benefactor's money while carrying a child of unknown paternity."

‎ "Sir it seems she's trying to also get back at Rosalie using this"

‎The temperature in the room seemed to drop instantly.

‎Ethan slowly raised his head. The sorrow in his dark eyes vanished. Something in him shifted. The grief stepped aside and something colder took its place.

‎"Which tabloids?" Ethan asked, his voice dropping.

‎"The Daily Chronicle, Global Media, and Coastal Truth," Mark replied. "They haven't published yet but they are verifying the lead."

‎Ethan stood up.

‎"Call the owners of those media groups directly," Ethan ordered. "Tell them if a single word, a single letter, or a hinted rumor touching Rosalie or my son reaches a printing press or a digital server, Vance Group will initiate immediate corporate acquisition of their companies by midnight. I will buy their companies, tear apart their assets and throw every editor involved onto the street."

‎He stepped closer to the window, his reflection ghostly against the glass.

‎"As for Chloe she wants to play with public defamation? Instruct our legal team to file formal criminal complaints for her past medical fraud and targeted harassment. Destroy her publicly and completely. No arrests. Just make sure she has nothing left to say and nowhere left to stand."

‎He paused.

‎"No one touches Rosalie. No one."

‎"Yes, Mr. Vance." Mark bowed his head and stepped outside.

‎Left alone, Ethan walked to the desk and picked up the photograph of little Leo. He brushed his thumb over the boy's dark eyes. Five years ago he had failed to shield Rosalie from his mother's hand and Chloe's lies. He had been a coward wrapped in arrogance. But now he would become the protection he should have given her five years ago, even if she hated him for the rest of his life.

‎The following morning the sun rose over the coastal city.

‎Inside the executive suite of Aura Corp, Rosalie sat behind a dark walnut desk in a tailored white suit, her hair pulled back cleanly. Across from her sat Christopher Sterling, sipping black coffee.

‎"Ethan acted quickly last night," Christopher said casually, setting his cup down. "Chloe tried to push a smear campaign through the media. Before my legal team could even move, Ethan had already crushed the entire story. By 2:00 AM the Daily Chronicle issued a formal public apology and Chloe was left with nothing left to weaponize."

‎Rosalie paused, her pen hovering over a contract. Her face remained calm and unreadable.

‎"I didn't ask him to do that," she said quietly.

‎"He knows," Christopher replied with a faint smile. "That's why he did it. He knows you don't need his help. But it seems the man is desperate to prove he isn't the fool he was five years ago."

‎Rosalie set her pen down and leaned back. "His regret changes nothing about the past. A few suppressed news stories won't erase the cold tiles of that hospital floor."

‎"I know, my dear," Christopher said gently. "You owe him nothing. But how do you plan to handle Leo? He's smart. He already knows that man is his father."

‎Rosalie looked out at the city. Her expression softened slightly at the mention of her son. "I will never keep Leo from his birthright. He deserves to know his father, even if that father broke his mother's heart. But it will be on my terms. Strict, controlled, and protected."

‎She reached into her desk drawer and pulled out a sealed leather folder.

‎"please have someone deliver this to his hotel," she said firmly. "If he wants an hour with Leo, he signs every single page without question."

‎Two hours later Ethan stood in his suite as a young associate from Rosalie's legal firm presented the leather folder.

‎He opened it. A formal Parenting and Visitation Protocol.

‎The terms were strict:

‎All visitations to occur in public or designated secure locations approved by Rosalie Sterling. Visitations not to exceed two hours per week initially, under supervision of an appointed guardian and so on. Ethan Vance to make no attempt to discuss past marital issues with or in the presence of Leo Vance-Sterling. Any breach of conduct will result in immediate and permanent revocation of visitation privileges.

‎The young lawyer looked slightly nervous, expecting pushback.

‎Ethan didn't hesitate. He pulled a fountain pen from his pocket and signed boldly at the bottom of every single page.

‎When he reached the final sheet he paused. He looked at the lawyer.

‎"Do you have a blank note sheet?"

‎"Yes, Mr. Vance," the lawyer replied, handing him a crisp piece of stationery.

‎Ethan placed the paper on the desk. His hand trembled slightly as he pressed the pen down and wrote:

‎Rosalie,

‎I have signed every term. I will abide by every rule you lay down, today and for the rest of my life. You don't have to forgive me, and you don't have to look at me. Just let me be a father to our son.

‎Yours always,

‎Ethan

‎He folded the note gently, placed it inside the folder and handed it back to the attorney.

‎"Tell her," Ethan said softly, that I will be waiting at the park at 2:00 PM sharp.

The folder arrived back at Rosalie's office an hour later.

She opened it alone after her assistant left the room. She flipped through the pages slowly, checking each signature. He hadn't negotiated a single term. Hadn't pushed back on anything.

Then she found the note tucked between the final pages. Handwritten. She almost set it aside but curiousity got the better of her, she read it once. Then she folded it carefully and placed it face down on the desk. Her expression didn't change. But her hand stayed on top of it a moment longer than it needed to.

By evening both sides had confirmed. Tomorrow the meet up would be by 2 PM at the park on Meridian. The next day Ethan had arrived at the park at 1:40.

He sat on a bench near the east gate with no security, no assistant, no folder. Just a man in a dark coat sitting in the sun waiting for a boy he had never held. At 2:00 pm exactly the gates opened he watched other children run past with their fathers and felt the full weight of five years settle quietly on his chest.

  • His Missing Piece   Chapter 6: Shadows and rivals

‎The executive floor of Aura Corp's glass skyscraper was bright with the kind of light that made everything look cleaner than it was. Through the floor-to-ceiling windows the coastal skyline stretched out in endless blue, but inside Rosalie's private office the atmosphere was warm and alive with low laughter.‎Rosalie sat back in her armchair, a soft relaxed smile on her lips. On the dark plush rug little Leo sat cross-legged, engrossed in assembling the model drone. Beside him was a man whose presence commanded respect in every major financial capital in the country Julian Thorne.‎ At thirty two Julian was the head of Thorne Capital, a powerful venture firm closely allied with the Sterling Network. He was handsome, charismatic, and carried a quiet easy confidence that never felt forced. More importantly he treated Rosalie not as a broken woman needing rescue but as an equal in the business world.‎"If you adjust the micro-rotor on the left wing Leo the stability sensors will aut

  • His Missing Piece   chapter 5: The test in the grass

‎Ethan had taken no chances. An hour before the meeting he had called Mark with strict orders clear the park of all visitors, secure every entrance, and deploy security at every gate to ensure complete privacy. He wanted no distractions, no media, and no unexpected eyes on his son.‎ Now at 1:15 PM the park was completely empty. High iron gates and security guards kept the noise of the city outside, leaving only the sound of wind moving through the pine trees.‎Ethan had arrived forty-five minutes early. He wore a dark charcoal sweater and dark trousers, leaving behind his usual tailored suits. There was no team of assistants, the executive bodyguards were at a distance not up close as usual. He stood near a wooden bench, his hands tucked deep into his pockets, his shoulders tight with an anxiety he hadn't felt in a decade.‎At 2:00 PM precisely a dark SUV pulled up to the garden entrance.‎Ethan's heart slammed against his ribs. Through the tinted glass he caught a glimpse of Ros

  • His Missing Piece   The price of regret

‎For five years, the Vance mansion felt less like an empire and more like an empty room nobody wanted to be in.‎Ethan Vance sat in his dimly lit office on the top floor of the Vance Group skyscraper, a glass of scotch resting untouched on the desk. He stared out at the city skyline and saw nothing. His face had forgotten how to feel anything. The grey strands of hair growing out was the visible sign of what was eating him alive.‎Five years ago the truth had shattered him. And the moment he found that crumpled pregnancy test in Rosalie's drawer he had torn the world apart in hope of making amends for his mistakes.‎He had spared no one. The morning after Rosalie vanished he stripped Eleanor of every card, every asset, every luxury tied to the Vance name and moved her to a modest apartment on the outskirts of the city, far from the circles she valued more than people. Chloe met a harsher fate. He exposed her scheme publicly, blacklisted her family from the business world and left her

  • His Missing Piece   The truth in the rain

The freezing downpour slammed against the glass doors of the hospital as Ethan stepped back inside, his coat heavy and drenched with rain. Water droplets trailed down his jawline but he didn't feel the chill. His chest felt tight, his heart still hammering with that same irrational panic that had gripped him the moment Rosalie walked away. His ego had told him she was playing a game, that she was waiting on the sidewalk for him to chase her. But the empty rain-slicked streets had proven him wrong. She had vanished into the dark without a trace, leaving his wealth, his name, and his life behind without a single glance.‎He walked down the sterile corridor, his steps muffled by the quiet of the late-night ward, heading back toward the intensive care unit. As he approached the semi-private recovery room where Chloe had been transferred, he noticed the door was cracked open. A sliver of warm light cut through the dim hallway.‎Ethan paused, his hand hovering near the handle as a low hush

  • His Missing Piece   The breaking point

‎‎Chapter 1: The Breaking Point‎‎The burn on her cheek was the only thing she could feel.‎‎"You absolute parasite!" Eleanor's voice shook with a venom that matched the force of the slap she had just delivered. She stood breathing heavily, her manicured fingers still trembling with rage. You ruined my son's life, you dragged our family name through the mud, and for what? To end up precisely where you belong in the gutter.‎‎Rosalie didn't move. She didn't press her hand to her cheek, nor did she look up to meet Eleanor's cold glare. Instead, she kept her eyes on the sterile hospital tiles, watching a stray drop of rainwater slowly dry against the porcelain.‎‎Eleanor's eyes narrowed when Rosalie said nothing. She stepped closer, as if silence was an insult she couldn't let go of. She paced the narrow corridor, the sharp, clicking of her designer heels echoing in the quiet hall. I knew from the moment you came to our home that you Were trouble. You think you can just walk away f
