I kept calling Lucien. His phone was off.

I sent a text, but the message wouldn't go through.

This was how Lucien always forced me to give in.

I fought back tears. Even unconscious, Nora was in pain. I quickly messaged Camilla.

"Please put Lucien on. The hospital needs payment now."

Camilla replied with a smirking emoji, then sent me a screen recording of some old messages.

It was from a year earlier, just after she became Lucien's financial advisor.

"Are you sure you don't want to give your wife her own card? I can't stand a woman who refuses to work and lives off her husband. Put me in charge, and I'll make her explain every cent she spends."

Lucien replied with a voice message, a low laugh in the background.

"I started out broke too. Back then, she worked three jobs, lived on instant noodles with me, and helped me pay rent. That's the woman I fell in love with. I don't want money to change her. She managed just fine when we had nothing."

My chest tightened. I could barely breathe.

He was right about one thing: I had survived those years without money.

But I had only gone without because I hated watching him work himself to the bone.

I kept telling myself I didn't need new clothes, skincare, or gifts.

When we finally made it, Lucien told me to quit my job.

I had waited for him to offer to support me. Instead, Camilla gave me one answer over and over. Denied.

"Then I'll approve necessities and nothing else."

Lucien replied with one word, "Fine."

My whole body shook.

And what counted as a necessity?

When the sole came loose from my shoe, I asked for a new pair. She told me to get it patched downstairs. I'd already been repairing the same shoes for two years.

When I ran out of shampoo, I asked for another bottle. She told me to use body wash instead. Shampoo was a waste of money.

I begged for days. In the end, she only approved groceries.

When they arrived, I had to take a picture of every item and send it to her for inspection.

Bit by bit, she took away what little dignity I had left.

Camilla sent me another voice message, her tone sickly sweet.

"Sofia, didn't you read the messages? Approving your spending is my job. If I let you contact Lucien, I'm not doing my job."

My fingers flew over the screen.

"Then approve my request for $30,000! Lucien's mother is the one who's sick. If she doesn't get treatment, that's on you."

She went quiet.

I thought she might finally hand the phone to Lucien. Instead, she sent another voice message, sounding indignant.

"You're trying to cut me out so Lucien thinks I'm not doing my job and fires me, aren't you?"

Then Lucien spoke up, sounding completely unconcerned.

"Relax. I'm not firing you, no matter what she says. My financial advisor is considerate and always looking out for me. I couldn't bear to lose you."

Couldn't bear to lose her.

Those words stung.

It reminded me of something he'd said two years earlier.

His startup had been fighting to survive. To help him land a contract, I drank with a client on his behalf.

That CEO kept ordering more drinks. I ran into the hallway to throw up four times. By the end, I could barely stand.

Lucien found me there and pulled me into his arms.

"Forget the contract. I'm not letting you do this to yourself for me. Come on. Let's go home."

The memory made my chest ache.

Lucien, do you even think of our place as home anymore?

A soft knock came at the door. Dr. Ethan Cole stepped in to check Nora's medications.

His gaze fell on the billing alert clipped to her chart. His face softened when he looked at me.

"We understand families sometimes have financial problems. We won't remove her ventilator or discharge her over an unpaid bill.

"But her hemofiltration isn't covered. If we don't get the deposit, we'll have to stop it.

"Her pneumonia is severe, and she's already in respiratory failure. Without the treatment, her organs could start shutting down. She could die within hours.

"The deposit must be paid by tomorrow morning. She can't wait any longer."

Lucien's eyes lit up. He hurried me into the car, anxiously scanning for anyone with a camera. The moment the press conference started, Lucien became a different man.The exhausted look was gone.He was polished and camera-ready, looking every bit like the powerful CEO again.A wall of microphones pointed toward me.One reporter asked, "Mrs. Vance, are you sure you came here willingly to help Vance Group clear its name and that no one forced you?"Laughter rippled through the room again.I felt Lucien's anxious gaze on me.I laughed softly and shook my head."I'm here of my own free will."I looked over at Lucien."Please give me control of the presentation."Lucien finally relaxed. He trusted me completely. Then my first slide appeared. It showed my messages with Camilla and Lucien.Line after line showed me asking for money to treat Nora and being denied.Lucien stared at me, stunned. He had never imagined the wife who always put him first would expose him in front of everyone. He gr

With Nora's ashes in my hands, I went home to my mother. She looked at me, happy but confused."Sofia? What are you doing home? And you've lost weight. When do you have to go back? Stay for dinner."Her warm palm cupped my cheek. My tears spilled before I could stop them."Mom, I'm not going back. I'm divorcing him."My mother had never liked Lucien. He had made me take money from her to cover our living expenses. We had no savings, no home of our own, and no car.Once Lucien became rich, she had warmed up to him, but only because I'd never told her how tightly he controlled my money.I was sure she would call me a fool for leaving now that he was finally rich.I pressed my lips together, wondering how to tell her without breaking her heart. But there was no easy way to say it. I took a breath.Mom cut me off and held me tight."Divorce him. Take every cent you're entitled to. I'm always on your side. Stay as long as you need."Within days, Mom had fed me until I looked healthy again.

Camilla's face crumpled. She shook her head frantically, her eyes wide with fear."No, Lucien, I didn't know! I thought it was Sofia's mother! I loved you too much. I didn't want your money going to people who meant nothing to you. I didn't know it was your mother."People from the nearby rooms began gathering in the hallway. They pointed at Lucien and Camilla and whispered about them."I wondered why that young woman was taking care of his mother alone. Her son never visited once.""So he was having an affair. He abandoned his wife and his mother, and the lover claimed she did it for love.""He let the other woman cut off his wife's access to money? I thought they were simply broke.""Now his mother is dead because of him. How will he live with that?""Someone film this. People need to see what they did."Tears and makeup streaked Camilla's face. Her perfect makeup was ruined, and she looked miserable. She kept trying to hide her face. Lucien seized her wrists and roared, "This is you

My body swayed. So when he first dismissed the illness as minor, he thought the patient was my mother. He simply hadn't cared whether she lived or died.He never imagined that his mother would pay the price.I pointed to the hospital room across the hall."I'm done talking. The room is right there. Go look for yourself."Lucien clearly hadn't expected me to be so sure.Camilla looked confused too, but she rushed into the room first.Someone lay motionless on the bed.A white sheet covered her face.Camilla hesitated. Then she spotted a melon on the table and smirked. She walked back into the hall, looking smug."Sofia, did you think we'd be too scared to lift the sheet? Is that why you thought you could fool us? You're even faking your mother's death. How low can you go?"That's the fruit you always asked for when you went to see your mother. You never bought melon for Lucien's mom. You barely even visited her!"I laughed until tears ran down my face.Lucien and I lived alone. My mothe

Camilla froze for a second, then quickly recovered. She snatched the certificate from Lucien, scoffed, tore it to pieces, and threw them in the air."It's just paper. Anyone can fake it, and you can put any name on it."Lucien seemed to relax. Camilla smiled and pointed at Ethan and me."Look. Why did this doctor hand it to you instead of Sofia, who supposedly knows him so well? Sofia is the one who's been claiming your mother is sick, isn't she?"Suspicion returned to Lucien's eyes as he looked between Ethan and me."Sofia, the proof is right in front of me. What do you have to say for yourself?"A storm of emotions hit me.I was heartbroken over Nora's death. But I had done everything I could. Now, I felt strangely calm. When I looked at Lucien, all I saw was a clown.I finally spoke."Dr. Cole and I do know each other well. Lucien, do you really think your mother has been healthy all these years?"Lucien's hands clenched, veins bulging along his arms."Of course! Are you still using

I looked into his cold eyes and suddenly felt exhausted.I had screamed myself hoarse telling him Nora was sick and needed money. He refused to believe me.One lie from Camilla was enough to erase years of trust. So why was I still fighting so hard? Her son didn't care. Why should I?I stopped fighting. Exhaustion washed over me.Then I remembered Nora holding my hands on our wedding day, promising with a smile that she'd never let Lucien mistreat me.I remembered how she'd once snapped at someone for mocking me about losing my father so young.I pulled free, tears running down my cheeks."Lucien, video-call your mother. Hear it from her."Camilla laughed and urged him to make the call. The call connected, and Nora appeared clearly on the screen.Tubes ran from her body, and an oxygen mask covered her face. She looked terrible. Before Nora could speak, Lucien snorted."Seriously, Mom? You're old enough to know better. Sofia still talked you into this stunt?"Camilla leaned into the fra
