Chapter 4

Author: No.8
The scalding water ran down my neck and left the skin red and burning.

Andy did not even seem to notice.

He gripped Rachel by the shoulders and tried patiently to calm her.

“Rach, take it easy. I know. I know how much pain you are in right now.”

Rachel, however, was not finished. She propped her phone on the bedside table and started a livestream.

“Everyone, meet the so-called compassionate doctor you all keep praising.”

Rachel shoved the camera close to my face, broadcasting me at my weakest and most disheveled.

“My name is Rachel Walser, and I’m publicly accusing Dr. Olivia Alonzi of deliberately knocking me down and causing my miscarriage. She did this out of jealousy because she’s been secretly trying to steal my boyfriend.”

She even uploaded a deceptively edited version of the security footage, keeping only the moment when I lost my temper and ordered her to leave.

The camera angle made it appear as though I had pushed her to the floor.

Within minutes, strangers had uncovered my personal information and flooded the internet with abuse.

[Oh my God, she is evil. Stealing another woman’s boyfriend wasn’t enough, so she used her position as a doctor to kill an innocent baby.]

[People like her are worse than animals. She should be stripped of her medical license for life.]

[I’ve memorized that face. I have nothing to lose, so if I ever see her, I’ll make sure she pays for what she did. Consider it my service to the public.]

Rachel was the one who had come between Andy and me.

They were the ones who had been carrying on behind my back.

I had been the victim.

Andy remained silent as thousands of people condemned me online.

An explanation from him would have been enough to prove my innocence.

Though from beginning to end, he said nothing in my defense.

I finally understood.

Whenever Andy had to choose between us, he would always choose Rachel.

I pulled out my phone and posted the video of Andy proposing to me, along with a caption.

[Everyone, this is the truth. I’m not the other woman who broke up a relationship.]

Unfortunately, before the post could gain any traction, Andy snatched the phone from my hand and deleted it.

“Olivia, you’re the one in the wrong here. You owe Rach this. You know firsthand what it’s like to lose a baby, so can’t you show her some compassion? How could you be this cruel? Just because you can never carry another child, does that mean you want to take motherhood away from everyone else too?”

His words tore open a wound that had barely begun to heal.

When Andy noticed the tears gathering in my eyes, he seemed to realize he had gone too far.

He sat beside my hospital bed and softened his voice.

“Olivia, the doctors said Rachel is extremely distressed after losing the baby. What happens if she becomes severely depressed and tries to hurt herself? I promise that once I have everything sorted out, I’ll give you the explanation you deserve.”

Even at that moment, Andy was dressing up his betrayal as though he were doing something noble.

Rachel cast me a triumphant look, but when she spoke, her voice was thick with grief.

“Andy, our baby is gone! I don’t care what it takes, I want her to pay! She has to pay for what she did!”

The comments on the livestream echoed her outrage.

[She absolutely deserves to pay. Imagine calling yourself a doctor while killing innocent lives. Someone like her deserves every terrible thing coming her way!]

The hatred closed in around me as one vicious comment after another raced across the screen.

I curled up in the corner of the hospital bed, feeling helpless beneath the relentless accusations and abuse.

“It wasn’t me! I didn’t hurt her or kill her baby!”

In the midst of my humiliation, the ward door suddenly swung open.

A man in a long midnight-blue overcoat strode into the room.

“Andy, looks like all of you have been thoroughly deceived. That pregnancy was never viable. She just wanted Olivia to be blamed for the miscarriage. More importantly, that baby was never even yours to begin with.”

“As for Rachel, she received a lengthy prison sentence. From what I heard, she’ll probably be behind bars for close to a decade. I can’t say I feel sorry for her. She finally got what was coming to her and paid for everything she did.”I did not even look up as I continued sipping the tonic. In the end, Rachel had brought it all upon herself. After swallowing the final spoonful of tonic, I asked softly, “What about the bad news?”A look of annoyance crossed Joseph’s face.“Ever since you returned to Mount Hawthorne, that cheating piece of trash has been camping outside the estate. I tried several times to send him away, but Dr. Voss stopped me. He said this is something you need to face and put behind you yourself. Andy showed up again just now, demanding to see you. I kicked him out, but he still refuses to leave. He should’ve thought of that before he betrayed you.”I set the empty bowl aside and said softly, “Got it.”For three days, a man dressed in black waited outside the

Rachel looked around and realized there was no coming back. She collapsed to the floor and cried out in despair, “Yes, I did it! Why should Olivia get to have a respectable career? Why does she get to stand above everyone and receive their admiration? I wanted to destroy her. I wanted her life to become just as miserable as mine! I wanted to leave her with no way out.”Andy hauled Rachel to her feet. “Rachel, you’re pure evil!”Slap!“I never imagined you were such a rotten, despicable wretch!”Five bright red finger marks appeared across Rachel’s cheek. When Andy turned to me, his eyes were filled with guilt.“Olivia, I had no idea. I’m sorry. I never knew Rachel would lie about you or set you up.”Andy tried to approach me, but Joseph immediately stepped between us.“Stay away from her. No one is buying this remorseful act.”Seeing that, Rachel wiped the tears from her eyes with the back of her hand and sneered.“Andy, who are you trying to fool with this devoted-fiance

Andy yanked his arm free from Rachel’s grasp. His brow furrowed tightly. In the past, the sight of Rachel in tears would have softened him instantly. At that moment, however, he felt nothing but disgust.“Tell me the truth. Who is the father?”When Rachel refused to speak, Joseph called out toward the door. “You can come in now.”The door opened and a heavyset man with a fleshy face stepped into the room. The moment Rachel saw him, terror took hold of her.She stumbled backward. Her voice was breaking as she said, “Stay away from me! Don’t come any closer! I’ll get you the money. I promise!”Andy stared at the man in shock.“Aren’t you Rachel’s cousin? Wait, have you been lying to me this whole time?”The man let out a contemptuous snort. “Oh, I’m not her cousin. We made that up so she could get close to you. After all, you’ve been my cash cow.”The man unlocked his phone and pulled up a series of wedding portraits between him and Rachel.“Rachel and I have been married for

Joseph’s phone vibrated in his hand.He stepped in front of Rachel’s phone and held his screen close to the lens.In the video, Andy appeared seated across from Dr. Voss in his study.“Dr. Voss, I really love Olivia. I want to marry her. I promise that she’ll be the only woman I ever love. Please give us your blessing.”Joseph then pulled up photographs from Andy’s engagement to me from a few months earlier. “I think the truth is perfectly clear now. Olivia was never the other woman. Andy and Rachel were having an affair behind her back. Olivia is the one who was betrayed.”The comments immediately flooded in.[Dear god, everyone. We’ve been used as pawns.][So, she was the other woman all along, and she accused the fiancee first to cover her own tracks?][The audacity of that other woman! The man is just as spineless for standing by and letting her slandering his fiancee.]When Rachel saw the public turning against her, she panicked and lunged for the phone. “Give me my p

The livestream, which had been flooded with scrolling comments, came to an abrupt halt the instant the man in the midnight-blue overcoat appeared. Then the questions began pouring in again.[Who is that man?]Joseph Fry, my fellow apprentice, ignored everyone else in the room and walked straight toward me. “Olivia, I went to the address Dr. Voss gave me to pick you up. When I couldn’t find you, I started asking around. That’s how I learned what had happened.”He swept a cold gaze over Andy and Rachel in the room. “Do you have any idea who she is? Olivia is the heir to a bloodline of diagnostic empaths and one of the most gifted healers of her generation. You have no right to treat her this way.”Rachel clutched her abdomen. A flicker of panic crossed her eyes. “Do you expect us to believe you just because you showed up in some dramatic coat and started making wild accusations? How dare you lie about me? I lost my baby, and she’s the one who caused it! You’re obviously an act
